NHS Blood and Transplant has issued the public appeal to help make sure there is enough plasma to enable a trial and treat patients. The blood plasma from people who have recovered from the virus could save the lives of people who are still ill. More than 175 donations of COVID-19 convalescent plasma have already been taken at Leeds city donor centre and the temporary donor centre in Seacroft. However NHS Blood and Transplant needs people to come forward to help make sure appointments are filled. There is a particular need for male donors and also female donors who have had a positive test. Professor Dave Roberts, Associate Director for Blood Donation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “Every new offer to donate is incredibly valuable. We particularly need men to come forwards as they generally have higher antibody levels. “We need to collect convalescent plasma now, to make sure plasma is readily available for the trial to treat people currently in hospital. “Donations can also be frozen to ensure convalescent plasma is readily available, should there be a rise in infections in the coming weeks.”

“Donations can also be frozen to ensure convalescent plasma is readily available, should there be a rise in infections in the coming weeks. “Please, help the NHS fight COVID-19 by donating at Leeds donor centres. You could save lives.” Convalescent plasma is being collected at NHSBT’s 23 donor centres around the country, and several pop-up donor centres. Donation takes about 45 minutes. Your body usually replaces the plasma you’ve donated in 24-48 hours. Your body also quickly replaces the antibodies. People can donate plasma as often as every two weeks. Police reveal 4,200 slavery victims - with one gang making £2million

West Midlands Police fear there are up to 4,200 victims of modern slavery in the region - and an astonishing 100,000 across the UK. The force has been pioneering efforts to tackle the often unreported crime and has arrested 58 suspected people traffickers since last January. Previous slavery estimates had placed the total UK slavery figure at between 10,000 and 13,000. Now a new report has revealed the staggering scale of the problem across the West Midlands through an innovative data analysis system. Across the UK the figure has now been estimated at an astonishing 100,000. The grim statistics have been released by anti-slavery charity Justice for Care and The Centre for Social Justice. The report, called It Still Happens Here, reveals that in the last three years the UK has been the top country of origin for suspected slavery victims. But by using a pioneering new data analysis project led by West Midlands called National Data Analytic Solutions (NDAS) – the UK figure has now been put at closer to 100,000. Justice for Care’s Chief Executive Officer Christian Guy said: “West Midlands Police’s innovation means that, for the first time, we have a much more accurate indication of the true extent of modern slavery in the UK. The COVID-19 outbreak has seen an unprecedented level of demand for food support, with many families across the UK struggling to access basic food supplies. Despite being forced to close and suspend its normal activities, the Hamara Healthy Living Centre – the largest BAME-oriented charity organisation in Leeds – has transformed itself into an emergency food hub and is working closely with Leeds City Council to provide emergency food parcels to those in needs. Over the course of this, however, we have recognised the need to provide specialised cultural food parcels containing items which are often not found in ordinary food parcels – such as ghee, lentils, ginger, and chapatti flour. These parcels have proven immensely popular and have been well received in the South Asian community and beyond, meeting the dietary needs of the community and bringing a comforting taste of home to recently arrived refugees and asylum seekers. Based in South Leeds, Hamara worked initially with the local community, but our work with organisations and charities across Leeds have enabled our service to expand across the city and allow more and more people to access culturally appropriate foods. From major organisations like Touchstone and MENCAP to local food banks and community centres, we are now acting as one of the city’s main cultural food hubs. We are continually receiving requests to support vulnerable individuals and families whose specific dietary needs are not being met with ordinary food parcels, and we feel proud that we have been able to rise to this challenge and provide this essential support. We believe it is crucial to recognise and respond to the unique needs of every community, and the response we have received so far has driven us to expand our range of cultural food items to include those from the African and Caribbean communities. In this way, we are now – through our co-operative work with other organisations – enabling more and more individuals from Leeds’ diverse ethnic communities to access culturally appropriate food. Operations Manager at Hamara, said: “We are astonished at how fast this has grown in such a short time and we hope to continue providing essential cultural food parcels long into the future.” Members of the Leeds Swahili Community collecting food parcels.

Guarantees and Indemnities are often confused and used interchangeably. Below are the key differences between guarantees and indemnities and their importance as the distinctions can be relevant regarding enforceability: • In a contract of guarantee, one party makes a promise to the other party that he will perform the obligation or pay the liability, in the case of default by a third party. • In a contract of indemnity, one party makes a promise to the other that he will compensate for any loss incurred to the other party because of the act of the promisor or any other person. • In an indemnity there are two parties involved, the indemnifier and the indemnified but in a contract of guarantee, there are three parties - debtor, creditor and surety. • The liability of the indemnifier in the contract of indemnity is primary whereas in a guarantee the liability of the surety is secondary because the primary liability is that of the debtor. • Unlike an indemnity, a guarantee must be in writing or signed by the guarantor in order for it to be effective. Guarantee documents can include both a guarantee and an indemnity so that the beneficiary can have the benefit of both and they are often executed as deeds to overcome any argument about whether good consideration has been given.
