  • Santee Sioux Indian Legends
NEBRASKA FOLKLORE PAMPHLETS Reproduced from Material Gathered for a Book on the Folklore of the State Issued Irregularly by the FEDERAL WRITERS' PROJECT IN NEBRASKA J. Harris Gable, State Director Robert E. Carlson, Editor Lincoln, Nebraska Prepared in Cooperation With the State Superintendent of Public Instruction SANTEE-SIOUX INDIAN LEGENDS Number Twenty-One May, 1939 These eight Santee-Sioux Indian legends have been collected from the files of the Word Carrier--a missionary paper published by the Santee Mission School. They appeared between the years of 1883 and 1887, when the paper had a circulation of less than 300 copies. "The Two Hunters," "The Orphan Boy," "The Fox," and "Canktewin--the Ill-Fated Woman," were translated by Miss Julia LaFramboise, a teacher and missionary in the Santee Normal Training School. "The Spider and the Ducks" was translated by Peter Hunter. The translations of "The Rabbit," "The Beaver," and "The Hunter" are anonymous. As published in the Santee missionary paper, the translations were very rough and made no attempt at literary style. Consequently, they have been subject to considerable editing to clarify their meaning, although every attempt has been made to retain the simple, almost childlike style of the Santee-Sioux original. Like most Indian legends, these have lost a great deal of their original charm and interest in translation and in print. So much of their effect depends upon the gestures of the story-teller and their natural setting. Certain references to large bodies of water not found in Nebraska, such as the sea mentioned in the "Orphan Boy," relate to the lakes of Minnesota, where the tribe originated.

  • Prairie Rising: the Ecology and Restoration of a Local Coastal Tallgrass Prairie
Armand Bayou Nature Center Prairie Rising: The ecology and restoration of a local coastal tallgrass prairie When the first European explorers emerged from the dense northern forests of America, they could scarcely believe their eyes. A “fruitful champayne countrie,” a treeless ocean of wildflowers, birds and animals, and grasses nine feet high, stretched and unbroken to the distant horizon. The explorers named it “prerie,” meaning “grassland” or “grassy orchard.” - John Madson A PUBLICATION OF THE COASTAL COORDINATION COUNCIL PURSUANT TO NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION AWARD NO.NA11NOS4190107. THIS PAPER IS FUNDED BY A GRANT/ COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT FROM THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED HEREIN ARE THOSE OF THE AUTHORS AND DO NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT THE VIEWS OF NO- AA OR ANY OF ITS SUB-AGENCIES. 2 INTRODUCTION Coastal tallgrass prairie exists in a very thin margin extending approximately fifty miles in- land along the Gulf of Mexico from Corpus Christi, TX to the Louisiana coast. Its close proximity to the ocean results in frequent rainfall events, creating a prairie ecosystem that has more wetland features than prairies located in the Great Plains region. The coastal tallgrass prairie has one of the most diverse plant communities in North America. Remnant prairies may contain as many as 1,000 different plant species, many of which produce a changing array of colorful flowers throughout the growing season. Despite this, prairies continue to be one of the most underappreciated ecosystems. Throughout the country 99% of coastal tallgrass prairie has been lost, making it one of the most critically imperiled habitats in North America.
