The Genius of Hitchcock Part One: August 2012
12/44 The Genius of Hitchcock Part One: August 2012 Special events include: x Tippi Hedren in Conversation x TV Preview + Q&A: THE GIRL – new BBC2 drama telling the full story of Hitchcock’s relationship with Tippi Hedren x Camille Paglia: Women & Magic in Hitchcock x The Lodger + composer Nitin Sawhney in Conversation Over the course of almost three months, Hitchcock’s surviving body of work as director will be presented in its entirety at BFI Southbank. The films will be grouped together, taking inspiration from one his most famous films to present the 39 Steps to the Genius of Hitchcock to help audiences increase their understanding of this complex and fascinating director. The first part of the BFI Southbank season in August, with special thanks to Sky Movies/HD, focuses on the first 12 steps, beginning with The Shaping of Alfred Hitchcock. The recent discovery in New Zealand of several reels of The White Shadow, scripted by Hitchcock, made international headlines. But other material, too, survives from his apprentice years, prior to The Pleasure Garden. In The Shaping of Hitchcock: Reflections on The White Shadow author Charles Barr will present a richly illustrated narrative of Hitchcock’s formative years, as an introduction to a screening of the thus-far incomplete The White Shadow (1924). BFI Future Film presents The DIY Thriller Film Fortnight to accompany the second step: The Master of Suspense. This course will give participants aged 15-25 the chance to make short thriller films inspired by Hitchcock. The Evolution of Style will look at the development of Hitchcock’s style – described by the director as ‘the first true Hitchcock film’, The Lodger (1926) introduces themes that would run through much of Hitchcock’s later work. -

THE NEWSLETTER OF THE NOËL COWARD SOCIETY - FEBRUARY 2010 Free to members of the Society Price £2 ($4) President: HRH The Duke of Kent, KG, GCMG, GCVO, ADC Vice Presidents: Barry Day OBE • Stephen Fry • Tammy Grimes • Penelope Keith CBE STEPHEN FRY AND JIM DALE - HONOUR THE MASTER LONDON AND NEW YORK CELEBRATE THE 110th ANNIVERSARY ach year the Society celebrates the life and work of Noël Coward at the site of two of the three statues sculpted to celebrate the centenary year of The Master’s birth. In London our Vice President Stephen Fry honoured us with his ‘svelte’ presence and a great speech about Noël who he Econfessed was someone he never met but who had shaped so much of his approach to life. Stephen admits he is a huge admirer of Noël’s diligence - something he endeavours to emulate in his own life. Barbara Longford welcomed Stephen with a resumé of the statue’s history: “ This statue, by Angela Conner, was commissioned at the behest of the late Graham Payn, for the Centenary Celebrations of Coward’s birth, in 1999. It was unveiled by Sir Noël’s friend, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, on 8th December, 1998, in the presence of Graham and an illustrious gathering of devotees. Two other casts are situated at Sir Noël’s grave at Firefly in Jamaica and also in the Theater Hall of Fame, at the Gershwin Theatre in New York and every year, on the Saturday nearest to his birthday, members of the Noël Coward Society gather, in London and New York for a flower-laying ceremony. -
Shakespeare on Audio (CD, Vinyl & Cassette)
Shakespeare on Audio (CD, Vinyl & Cassette) Historical Recordings & Anthologies Shakespeare recordings have been in evidence from the earliest days of the wax cylinder, through the short-playing 78 rpm shellac discs of the 1930s and the long-playing 33 1/3 rpm vinyl discs (LPs) and reel-to-reel tapes of the 1950s, to the widely available audio cassettes, compact discs (CDs), videotapes, and digital recordings of the present. Before Orson Welles’s innovative Mercury Text Records series issued by Columbia Records in 1938, no one had attempted to record full-length audio versions of Shakespeare. Previously only isolated passages from the plays had been available, performed by fabled stage actors such as E.H. Sothern and Julia Marlowe, Herbert Beerbohm-Tree, Ellen Terry and a few others and recorded between 1890 and the First World War. Between the wars, Hamlet’s “O what a rogue and peasant slave…” and “How all occasions do inform…” and Macbeth’s “Is this a dagger…?” were recorded on 78s by such stars as Henry Ainley and John Barrymore, and included with other famous soliloquies and educational intent on Johnston Forbes-Robertson’s two-disc How to Speak Shakespeare (Columbia, 1928). These recordings existed almost entirely for the purpose of preserving a famous actor’s reading of a set speech. The custom of recording speeches and brief duologues by great actors, although partly a matter of technology and packaging (a speech can fill one side of a 78 rpm disk), reflects a cultural reality as well, an attitude toward Shakespeare that sees his plays as predominantly a collection of purple passages and wise saws. -
