Two wonderful African American artists, Julius Lester and Jerry Pinkney were able to reinvent it for children to enjoy today. Adults and children love the "colorful language" and the glorious illustrations. Ever since my 6 year old brought this book home from the school library my 4 year old loved it. He would ask for it whenever it was his turn to pick the evening book. So I got it for him for his 5th birthday and he is as happy as can be. There is a part where the tigers start calling each other a couple of names such as "Insect breath" and "loser". I drop those phrases as I'm reading and nobody knows the difference. Otherwise it is a fun book to read and the illustrations keep those little eyes on the pages. I recommend this book. Update: My youngest is 7 years old now and this book is still his favorite. With all due respect, this is not my favorite version. I do appreciate the author's note, and the land of Sam-sam-sa-mara where India, Africa, and animals that talk live together. And I appreciate This book is about Sam a boy who is going to school and he gets many clothes and he looks amazing in them. He then begins to go out and the tigers take his clothes and he no longer looks good he then takes them back when they are fighting.
