Two wonderful African American artists, Julius Lester and Jerry Pinkney were able to reinvent it for children to enjoy today. Adults and children love the "colorful language" and the glorious illustrations. Ever since my 6 year old brought this book home from the school library my 4 year old loved it. He would ask for it whenever it was his turn to pick the evening book. So I got it for him for his 5th birthday and he is as happy as can be. There is a part where the tigers start calling each other a couple of names such as "Insect breath" and "loser". I drop those phrases as I'm reading and nobody knows the difference. Otherwise it is a fun book to read and the illustrations keep those little eyes on the pages. I recommend this book. Update: My youngest is 7 years old now and this book is still his favorite. He then begins to go out and the tigers take his clothes and he no longer looks good he then takes them back when they are fighting. Julius Bernard Lester was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 27, He received a bachelor's degree in English from Fisk University in He moved to New York to become a folk singer. He performed on the coffeehouse circuit as a singer and guitarist. He released two albums entitled Julius Lester in and Departures in In the Sam and the Tigers: A New Telling of Little Black Sambo, Lester was closely involved as a writer and photographer with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He traveled to the South to document the civil rights movement and to North Vietnam to photograph the effects of American bombardment. He also hosted radio and television talk shows in New York City. He wrote more than four dozen nonfiction and fiction books for adults and children. His books for adults included Look Out, Whitey!
