    Texas United Methodist Historical Society Newsletter Fall, 2018 Vol. 10 #2 Editor’s Letter by Wm. C. Hardt Lon Morris Remembered will be held on Saturday, November 17 at First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be food, music, displays, and speakers. As many readers of this Newsletter know, Lon Morris College was an institution of the Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. Lon Morris College was founded in 1854 as the New Danville Masonic Female Academy near Kilgore. In 1873, under the leadership of Dr. Isaac Alexander a young Methodist minister, the school moved into Kilgore and became Alexander Institute. It moved to Jacksonville in 1894 under the name Alexander Collegiate Institute. In 1924 is received an endowment from R. A. “Lon” Morris and was renamed in his honor. Methodists started many schools in the mid-19 th century, and Lon Morris was the only one in East Texas to survive into the modern era. In 2012 it filed for bankruptcy, bringing to an end decades of service. The November 17 th evening to remember Lon Morris is being organized by the Rev. Barbara Hugghins of FUMC Jacksonville, Dr. Faulk Landrum, past president of LMC, and Dr. Deborah Burkett of the Cherokee County Historical Commission. Rev. Hugghins and Dr. Landrum are both deeply involved with the work of the TUMHS and the Commission on Archives and History of the Texas Conference. My connection with Lon Morris goes back at least to 1911 when my grandmother, Dorcas Riddlesperger enrolled in ACI.

    “Moving Beyond Cultural Competency to the Work of Anti- Oppression” Workshop & Learning Objectives: The concepts and meanings of cultural competence have evolved through many iterations and continue to expand. What does it really mean to understand and work with different populations and groups proficiently? This training will explore the history of cultural efficacy in the counseling professions. We will look at mov- ing beyond understanding of the stereotypical view of certain groups to gaining a deeper understanding of issues these groups face. This training will cover racism (and other isms), generational trauma, racial trauma, and how to focus on these issues when working with clients. The work of anti-oppression is complex and requires understanding of historical issues, increasing awareness of the world around us, and deep introspection. Join us to share and increase understanding of working with, and advocating for, all of our clients. Instruction leadership participates regularly as the Instructional Administrator on the California Guided Pathways 2020-2023 Project attending webinars, engaging in professional development around guided pathways implementation and equity, and working on related Academic Affairs projects. ENGAGEMENT Yes Approved many new and revised Board Policies and Administrative Procedures related to academic and professional matters, including the Credit for Prior Learning policy. And Academic Senate successfully led a collegial consultation work group to adopt the District's Camera Policy. ENGAGEMENT Yes Campus Life & Student Engagement staff organized a complete online ASG Elections experience and had a record number of candidates participating in the elections resulting in Campus Life & Student Engagement a majority of the positions being filled. ENGAGEMENT Yes 20/21: Pioneered new virtual community engagement events, through the ongoing “Science Talk” series, including a reimagined Star Party, virtual panel on COVID-19, and upcoming CCC Administration talks on Chemistry, Botany, and other science disciplines. ENGAGEMENT Yes 20/21: Hosted virtual advisory committee receptions, and kept the community informed CCC Administration with regular updates from the campus. ENGAGEMENT Yes 20/21: Successfully partnered with Southern California Edison, allowing CCC to serve as a Community Resource Center during PSPS events, while raising revenue for the District per CCC Administration incident. ENGAGEMENT Yes Develop and train William S. Hart District trainers for COVID distance teaching. Completed Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning Summer 2020 ENGAGEMENT Yes Our Chemistry Club began creating and conducting outreach activities in Fall 2019 (kinder outreach).
