Quilt finishes 83¾" x 99" Argyll-02-2014 Jinny Beyer’s Argyll quilt combines two diamond units to create a dynamic overall design. Using fabrics from her first batik collection, the colors are rich and saturated. Time-saving techniques include rotary cutting, strip piecing and all straight seam sewing. The borders are mitered. All seam allowances are ¼-inch. Press seams to one side. WOF = Width of Fabric. Read the entire pattern before beginning. Basic quiltmaking knowledge is assumed. Step 1: Cut the Fabrics Following the Colorway Guide for your project, cut the number of 2½" strips indicated, subcutting some strips into half-strips (21" segments) as noted. Some half-strips may be left over. Cut the remaining yardage for the borders as follows: Border 1: Cut nine strips 2" x WOF. Border 2: Cut 9 strips 2¼" x WOF. Diagram 1. Sew the strips for each strip-set together, offsetting Border 3: Cut 10 strips 6½" x WOF. Reserve the remainder them 1" to the right. for binding. Step 2: Make the Strip-Sets Referring to the Colorway Guide and using the number and length of strips indicated for each unit, arrange the strips for each strip-set in the order shown. All Units: Offset each strip 1" to the right so that the top strip is furthest to the right, then sew the strips together (Diagram 1). Using Jinny Beyer’s Perfect Cut 60° Diamond Ruler, or aligning the 60° line of a quilter’s ruler with the bottom edge of the strip-set, trim off the uneven left edge (Diagram 2). Then cut strips 2½" wide, maintaining the 60° angle (Diagram 3). Each WOF strip-set yields 13 segments; each 60° line on ruler 21" strip-set yields 6 segments. Diagram 2. Step 3: Make the Units Referring to the Colorway Guide, sew the strips together to make 28 A units, 30 B units, 8 A1 units, 6 eahch of A2 and 2½" B2, and 4 B1 units. Before sewing, carefully pin the strips together, matching the seams at the ¼-inch seam line. B2 B B Trim off the uneven edges of the quilt, leaving ¼-inch B2 seam allowance beyond the points of the last complete row of diamonds as in Diagram 6. Mark a dot ¼-inch A A in from each corner. Step 5: Make & Add the Borders Sew all the Border 1 strips cut in Step 1 together end to B1 end. Repeat for the Borders 2 and 3 strips. Cut the strips B1 into lengths as follows: Border 1: two 70" and two 85" Border 2: two 75" and two 90" Border 3: two 87" and two 103" Note that all border strips are cut oversized and are B2 B2 trimmed to fit when applying them to the quilt using a no-math method. Sew the shorter fabric strips together as in Diagram 7 to make the top and bottom border pieces. Repeat with the longer fabric strips to make the two side borders. (The ends will not be even.) 1 2 3 Diagram 7: Make the Border Strips Lay one of the shorter border strips across the center of the quilt horizontally as in Diagram 8. (Opposite sides of a quilt often measure slightly differently. Using a measurement taken from the middle of the quilt will help keep the quilt from “ruffling” at the edges.) To mark the first miter, position a right-angle triangle so that one of the sides of the right angle runs along the bottom edge of the border strip. Then carefully move the triangle until the angled side touches the point where the top edge of the bor- der meets the edge of the quilt. (If you are using a quilter’s ruler, align the 45° line along the bottom edge of the border strip.) Diagram 8: Cutting the Miters 2 Mark then cut the 45° miter line. Because the miter is cut right at the edge of the quilt, the seam allowance is already Fabric Requirements included. Repeat to cut a second strip or use the first as a pattern. The quilt units are made by sewing individual strips of fabric into strip-sets, then sewing the different strip-sets together. The strip-sets for each unit are divided in the illustrations below with red lines. For example, in Unit A, the first strip-set is made from Fabrics 1-2-3-4; the second is made from Fabrics 2-5-6-7; and so on. Units A1, A2, B1 and B2 are not complete dia- monds, so varying numbers of fabrics are used in each strip-set.
