From the President

Good tidings to all. This my first editorial as president of this great club.

Let’s begin my wife, Roz, and I joined the club 9 years ago and were amazed at the friendliness and helpfulness of the club’s members. Since then I have been, for the past 6 years, actively engaged in driver training, as well as a stint as Trip master. Now I am turning my hand as President, I am positive that with the guidance of your elected committee we will be able to continue to keep the club in the right direction.

I would like to thank the outgoing President, Craig Green, as well as the past committee for their resolve and efforts in guiding the club in a fantastic direction. I would like to thank the newly elected committee for putting up their hands for their positions. We still require the positions of Editor, Publicity Officer, Social Co-Ordinator, Tripmaster, and Refreshment’s Co-Ordinator to be filled, I would like to hope that these will be filled at the next general meeting 12th September 2019 in the Tuggerah Primary School at 8.00pm.

Coming up in the next couple of months are the October long weekend at our we-leaser and then the most important event of the year the Xmas party which will be held on Saturday 23rd November 2019 also as the we- leaser. Of good news we have purchased a new Santa suit to replace the old one which has gone missing. Watch the magazine for more details.

Another topic of great concern is growth of membership and the number of trips that are scheduled in the magazine. We should not rely on a few members to run all the trips. If you have any thoughts or ideas to increase these topics, please do not hesitate to let members of the committee or myself know.

Best Regards Neale Simpson President CC4WDC [email protected] 0404 843 445 4

A REQUEST FOR HELP

As has been mentioned before, we are trying to attract some more fami- lies into our club to keep it balanced and fun for ALL age groups. We are looking for ideas that will assist us to attract more families with kids to the club and also to get more of the members with kids to partici- pate in more activities. Please put your thinking caps on and let us know via email or Facebook if you have any ideas, or if you are a family with kids, what sort of events would you like to see. It doesn’t have to be four wheel driving, any event that gets us together and having some fun is all we are looking for. So please, give it some thought and let us know. The committee’s email addresses are all on the second page of this magazine.

DAY TRIP TO FORT SCRATCHLEY-NEWCASTLE

The ten participants met up with Ken and Yvonne (trip leaders) on a beautiful Sunday morning for our trip to Fort Scratchley.

We headed off for the shortish drive to Newcastle via the Doyalson Link Road and arrived at the Fort which stands guard over the entrance to Newcastle harbour and overlooks Nobbys Beach.

Nine of us paid to do the guided tour of the underground facilities which was led by 92 year old Norm, an ex pommie sailor, who has been doing tours for over twenty odd years and is a bit of a character.

Being a WW2 buff myself I was hanging on every word he had to say but I’m sure the others were just as interested as he had some good stories to tell about the fort interspersed with a few old pommie jokes as well.

I’m not going to give you a detailed tale of the history of the fort but would recommend you do the tour yourself. At the end of the tour Norm sat us down and showed us a collection of his own photos that he’s collected over the years and then went into his comedian role telling us a plethora of old jokes. He had to do most of the talking as he was as deaf as a post but we did enjoy the fun of it.

Some of us had a quick walk around the outside guns and buildings then we had lunch in the old barracks before racing out for the firing of the one o’clock cannon. We went back to the barracks to finish lunch and who should turn up again but Norm, the guide, who regaled us with another swag of jokes before going to see his wife in the dementia ward. (I think she just needed a quiet place to go to get some peace and quiet).

After lunch we wandered around the museum buildings the Ken arranged with another guide, who turned out to be the last commanding officer of the fort, for a tour through the restoration building where there were old army trucks, guns, searchlight etc to see.

We drove back along the beautiful, and busy, Newcastle beaches before saying out good byes and thank yous to Ken and Yvonne for a great day.

Gunnedah Agquip, Baradine -Pilliga Forest and Warrumbungle National Park

Trip leader Trevor Banks. Travellers John B, Helen T, Wombat, Simon and Cheryl We met up on Sunday 18th August at the rest stop on the Hunter Expressway then proceeded on our way to Gunnedah with a rest stop on the way. We arrived at our destination the Showground at Gunnedah, set up then had a look around town. We had Monday to look around town and do some sightseeing. Very dry up this way. Tuesday morning, we went to Agquip and spent the day walking around, so much to see. Tuesday night they had a night market in the town, so we all went to have a look. As there was so much to see most of us decided to go back to Agquip on Wednesday morning. We went out to dinner at the Railway Hotel on Wednesday night, good meal.

On Thursday morning we all packed up ready to leave. Wombat returning home while the rest of us went to Baradine. Very windy when we arrived. Visited the Pilliga Discovery Centre to see what trip to do the next day. Simon and Cheryl left on Friday morning to go to The Warrumbungles while Trevor, John and Helen did some 4wd drive tracks around the Pilliga Forest, visiting Sculptures in the Scrub, Sandstone Caves and the Salt Caves and the Pilliga Forest Tower. On Saturday morning we left Baradine to go to The Warrumbungles to meet up with Simon and Cheryl. We did a walk that afternoon along a fire trail, saw plenty of kangaroos. Lovely weather during the day but cold at night and in the morning. Sunday morning Simon and Cheryl left for home while Trevor, John and myself went on some bush walks. Split Rock circuit track, very steep in parts and then the Whitegum Lookout. After this we had a relaxing time back at camp. Monday, we packed up and headed home. A great time was had by all. Thanks to Trevor for putting on this trip. By Helen T

Woko via Barrington tops 24th and 25th August 2019

On Saturday at 9:00 am we met at Gloucester in the carpark. This was our first family adventure with the club so there was a mixture of anticipation and some nerves. Introductions were made and our trip leader Toni Clark gave us an outline of the plan for the day. We departed at around 9:30 am. The trip was dominated by Toyota Prado’s, forgive me Nissan supporters but since I drive a Prado, I could not help noticing this fact. There were Toni & Fay in a Mitsubishi Challenger, Anthony & Kylie in a Nissan Patrol, Alan in a much older Patrol and no less than four Prado’s. Our family, Gary and his two boys, Dave & Michelle and aunty Bev were all driving Toyota Prado’s of various ages and descriptions. I am not sure if this is a testament to the ability of the Prado or due to the reputation of Toyota. If we have to go on pure historical endurance the old Nissan Patrol of Alan has been around for many years and just keeps going, so I am told. The plan was to head up to the Polblue campground and picnic spot for morning tea. We briefly stopped at the Thunderbolts lookout. There was a hint of snow on the roadside not long before reaching our morning tea stop, more to the joy of some than others. After morning tea, the convoy headed off on a quick loop of The Firs. This is a magical and slightly mysterious little place in The Barrington’s and is al- most like entering another world. The Firs parking was followed by the first technical track section. Ac- cording to the map the track was called Horse Swap Trail. I had to admit that this was slightly out of my comfort zone at times but the reason we purchased a 4WD and joined the club. There was a large mud pool which after a quick recon by Toni and Fay was bypassed using the so-called chicken track. Appar- ently, the pool was around a meter deep and appeared to have a very soft bottom so a detour was probably a very wise decision. Strangely enough the track ended at Horse Swap campground where we stretched our legs on a brief walk down to the Polblue Falls. Another little gem where the water was rather a lot cooler than swimming water temperature. A detour via Wrights trail took us to our lunch stop at the campground. Our road was blocked along the track by a fallen tree, not the last one we encountered on the trip. A little bush bash- ing was required to pass the rather large obstruction. Post lunch entertainment was another loop through the bush before heading in the direction of our overnight campsite, The Woko Campground. We won’t go into a lot of detail about the final leg of our journey but will say that the initial plan was to be at camp by about 4pm. We eventually arrived at around 5:30pm after what can only be described as a few miss directions. However, the campsite was beautiful and the beers were very enjoyable after the long day. I cannot help thinking that some record camp set-up times were achieved on Saturday evening due to darkness closing in rapidly. The socialising around the campfire was enjoyed by all. Dinner was almost an afterthought once the nibbles and beers were brought out. The children all had fun and one or quite a few marshmallows. Sunday morning was cool and the campfire was a source of warmth and much activity. Departure time was 10am as less driving was planned for the day. After some bitumen roads, we headed along Upper Bowman road and through the mountains. Aunty Bev earned herself a few lollies and even a beer for all her work closing the gates we passed through. Entertainment at morning tea was in the form of some friendly cattle. The cows even scored a few snacks from the visitors.

22

Our final destination was The Gloucester River Campground where Aunty Bev enjoyed a beer and a book while the rest of us headed up the very narrow, steep and winding Gloucester Tops road to view the Gloucester River near the source. Toni and Fay told us about some beautiful walking tracks in the area which would be well worth a future visit. Since there was not much else to see on the mountaintop, we re- joined Aunty Bev at the campground below for lunch. After lunch Toni and Fay escorted those of us who were going home back to the Gloucester Tops road bitu- men section, after a few causeway crossings, where we reinflated our tyres and said our farewells. This trip report would not be complete without mentioning the devastating drought which is currently gripping the region. There was evidence of the drought everywhere we went. The land was very dry and a lot of the streams we crossed were clearly extremely low. Michelle posted some pictures on our Facebook page which highlight the dryness. Hopefully there will be rain someday soon and the beauty and greenery of the area will be restored. Words like educational, interesting, sociable and most enjoyable are definitely appropriate to describe the trip. The awesome places we experienced would probably never have been discovered outside of the club. I would love to return to the Woko and Gloucester River Campgrounds in the near future as they are both beautiful places which offer a lot to the four-wheel driver and camper who likes a basic campsite sur- rounded by nature. A huge thank you and all credit to Toni and Fay for a very successful and wonderful weekend. Background images and images thanks to Michelle Edwards and Anthony Gavin

IMPORTANT NOTICES

The lease manager would like to remind everyone not to feed the horses at the lease as they become too familiar and can cause damage to cars, vans and tents. Also, just a reminder, that NO PETS are allowed at the We-Leaser under any circumstances, unless they are a registered assistance animal, and have been approved by the Committee. One more thing…… When visiting the lease please remember to sign in to the visitor book, as this is an official club site and we are required to take attendance, just like we do at club meetings and trips.

25

A note from the Trip Master

We have simplified the trip sign on process . The next two pages have two forms for trip leaders. Central Coast 4 Wheel Drive Club

PARTICIPATION IN CLUB EVENTS

On behalf of the club we would like to welcome you to this outing and would like your co-operation in making this a successful and happy trip for all. I would like to remind you of the trip procedures and by-laws pertaining to this trip. Please note that all participant names need to be on the Sign On Sheet, and anyone 17 years or older must also sign the sheet. GATE PROCEDURE The leading vehicle will open any gates and the last vehicle must leave the gate as instructed by the trip leader.

CONVOY PROCEDURE All vehicles must have a working UHF radio. It is the responsibility of ALL drivers to maintain contact with the following vehicle and you MUST WAIT at ANY INTERSECTION OR BRANCH TRACK until the following vehicle has caught up and the driver knows which track to follow. Always stay in the same position in the convoy for the duration of the trip. If a driver is trying to contact the vehicle ahead of them (without a radio) they will turn on the headlights and flash the high & low beam. This is a signal for the rest of the convoy to stop. ALWAYS allow a reasonable distance between vehicles, particularly on hills or in dusty conditions. ALWAYS travel with headlights ON. When negotiating river crossings, steep hill climbs or descents ONLY ONE VEHICLE is to be negotiating the obstacle at one time. The following vehicle is to give the vehicle ahead plenty of room and to wait for the preceding vehicle to call the following vehicle through the obstacle. When any form of recovery is in progress, all those not directly involved in the rescue should keep well clear and at a safe distance. Parents are particularly asked to keep their children safely away.

BY LAWS Anyone leaving the convoy must notify the trip leader and give details of their destination. Riding on the exterior of vehicles should be avoided.

Fires can’t be lit without the permission of the trip leader and the use of fires must comply with all current fire regulations. Fires must be extinguished when leaving camp.

NO FIREARMS OR EXPLOSIVES will be used or displayed on any trips.

NO LITTER should be left and rubbish should be disposed of properly.

NO DOGS OR OTHER ANIMALS are permitted on club outings

Any special conditions or instructions given by the trip leader must be followed.

VISITORS Are reminded that they are on a club outing and are also bound by the constitution and by- laws of the club. Failure of visitors to comply with or disregard any directions of the trip leader will result in the visitor being asked to leave the convoy. TRIP REPORTS Please be prepared to contribute to the trip by doing a Written Trip Report or a Verbal Trip Report to advise the rest of the members how everything went on the journey. The Trip Leaders put a lot of effort into running these Events.

DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH FUEL, FOOD & WATER? Please check with the trip leader for minimum requirements

4. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to contact the trip leader the night be- fore the trip. This will enable you to confirm your attendance, and also check that the trip hasn’t been affected by weather conditions.

5. Trips can only be booked once they have been published in the Club Magazine. A sign in sheet will be available at each monthly meeting.

TRIP CLASSIFICATION CODES

D. This class of trip is considered to be a relatively easy trip. In is un- likely that any winching and/or towing will be required

WESTERN WOLLEMI

[Musk Duck Spray, Dunn’s Swamp]

Date: October 23 - 28 (Wednesday to Monday), 2019 Class: C-D Vehicle Limit: 10 Meeting Time/Place: 1.00 pm at Rylstone on Wed. Oct. 23 [at the Recreation Ground opposite Rylstone Hotel]

Information: This was originally designed as a camping trip because the best tent sites are near the water at Dunn’s Swamp. BUT, if you wish to bring a caravan or camper-van, these may be set up away from the water. Cost: The camping fee is $6 per adult and $3.50 per child, per night. Activities include bushwalking, swimming and kayaking in/on the beautiful water reservoir (on the Cudgegong River), rock climbing, Finska, fishing (fishing licence required) and a half day excursion to Ferntree Gully.

The 4WD portion of this trip (only 20km) takes us into the north-western corner of Wollemi National Park, on a rarely traversed track, over Nullo Mountain, via private roads at each end. A scenic drive through the Widden val- ley brings us back on to the Cox’s Gap road, then via Denman for the trip home. N.B. If you bring your caravan, you will be unable to return via this road. Depending on the number of caravans in the group, I propose three alternatives: (i) Return via Nullo Mt. on Sunday or Monday morning, as indicated above, (ii) Escort caravanners through this track, in their 4WD vehicle only; they will then return via Bylong to Dunn’s Swamp, to return home, with caravan, via the sealed roads. (iii) Omit the 4WD section and travel home on the Sunday or Monday. ## If it rains, the third option is the only one, as the track is available in fine weather only.

What to Bring: Camping gear, drinking water, shower (if desired), kayaks (if possible), sturdy walking shoes, swimming togs. [Pit toilets are provided] ### Those who have only the weekend available may wish to join us at Dunn’s Swamp on the Friday evening. ** We plan to be away from home for some periods of the year, so our mobile phone may not be within range if you ring. Please try again later.

What to bring: Food and drink for the day, a pen, basic recovery gear and a readiness for learning. What to expect: Stage One training is an introductory course to 4WD. The day is split into two parts, initially at the community centre and involves theory, starting with the basic me- chanics and safety knowledge of a 4x4. Morning Tea break allows the trainers to work with each participant and their vehicle, locating and identifying the necessary safety equipment in their truck. The next session outlines driving techniques over various terrains and an introduction to club protocols. After lunch we move into a practical training session allowing you to practice your skills in a safe, supervised area. This session will cover the essential safety technique of a stall start recovery, followed by practice in picking a line in assents, descents and basic rock steps.

42

We further investigate aspects of vehicle maintenance, practising pre-trip inspections and completing a tyre change. After morning tea, we revise the stall start recovery and simulate simple snatch strap re- covery techniques- this is where you finally get to use all that wonderful gear you’ve brought along. In the afternoon we head out the back gate and put our training into practice. Taking the back tracks through the State Forests we complete rutted and rocky tracks and simple water crossings. Prior to dinner, we complete a simple revision assessment as a group. Upon completion of Stage Two, you will be prepared to undertake the NSW and ACT 4WD Association Accreditation certificate, a nationally recognised qualification.

Positive Feedback

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU USE A CLUB SPONSOR

We recently had to do a GVM upgrade on our 200 series Landcruiser so that it could legally tow our 22 foot caravan.

During our research we noted that one of our club sponsors, All 4 X 4 Spares at Kotara, Newcastle

are an approved installer for the Lovells GVM Upgrade kits.

We contacted them and discussed what we wanted (GVM upgrade to 3800 kg and a 2 inch lift) and a date was booked. They are very busy so we had to wait about 3 weeks. In the meantime we had put the car and caravan over the weighbridge and discovered that we would be cutting it too fine with the 3800kg GVM upgrade and that we should now look at the 4000kg upgrade. We rang All 4 X 4 Spares and discussed this with them and they agreed that the 4000kg upgrade would be more appropriate. They contacted Lovells, made sure that Lovells would take the 3800kg kit back and ordered the 4000kg kit. The only problem was that it could not be delivered by the original installation date and a new appointment was made.

On installation day we took the car to Kotara and left it with them for the 2 days required to do the install and picked it up on the agreed day. A GVM upgrade is not cheap but the pain of the cost can be mitigated by good service and we were very happy with the service provided. The staff at All 4 X 4 Spares were very efficient and friendly and their new facilities (including customer waiting room with comfy chairs, free tea/coffee etc.) are first rate. The new show room is certainly worth a wander around also.

In case you are wondering NO we are not employees of the company, nor are we related to anyone from there, and we certainly didn’t receive a discount to write this blurb. They were very happy to note that we were from CC4WDC and that their advertising in our club magazine was worthwhile.

We believe that when a business gives value for money and good service as well as supporting our club, other club members should be informed. All 4 X 4 Spares are most certainly worthy of your consideration too.
