Abstract Jesus, Jung, and the Charismatics: The Pecos Benedictines and Visions of Religious Renewal Kody Sherman Jackson, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2016 Supervisor: Robert Abzug The Catholic Charismatic Renewal, though changing the face and feel of U.S. Catholicism, has received relatively little scholarly attention. Beginning in 1967 and peaking in the mid-1970s, the Renewal brought Pentecostal practices (speaking in tongues, faith healings, prophecy, etc.) into mainstream Catholicism. This thesis seeks to explore the Renewal on the national, regional, and individual level, with particular attention to lay and religious “covenant communities.” These groups of Catholics (and sometimes Protestants) devoted themselves to spreading Pentecostal practices amongst their brethren, sponsoring retreats, authoring pamphlets, and organizing conferences. -

Colour my Words COLOUR MY WORDS How colour adds meaning to our language Eleanor Maclure Introduction The words we use to describe colours are not only for naming and identification purposes. Colour terms are often employed as part of our spoken and written language, either literally or figuratively, to evoke imagery and add depth or meaning to our words. A sizeable body of phrases employing colour terms exists in English. Idioms, along with features such as slang, euphemisms, clichés and adages all add to the rich tapestry of our speech and writing. Idioms are expressions where the figurative meaning of the words in the phrase is completely different to their literal meaning. Estimates suggest that there are over 25,000 idioms in English, creating a significant body of expressions that are difficult to translate and are often only fully appreciated by native speakers. Among the idioms that contain colour terms, a visual cue can often be found in the origin of the phrase. The expressions “red tape” and “red letter days” were once literal descriptions. Three hundred years ago, government or official documents were held together with red ribbon and in the thirteenth century, monks wrote important dates on their calendars in red ink, to stand out against the other days, which were black. Nowadays, phrases such as these and many others are far removed from their original meaning. However, by retaining the use of colour terms, phrases like ‘blue in the face’ evoke a very colourful, mental image. While others like ‘streets paved with gold’, have a poetry to them that ‘streets paved with five pound notes’ never could. -
Substance Induced Psychosis
Substance Induced Psychosis ABSTRACT When patients present with signs of psychosis, it is critical that health clinicians are able to properly assess and determine root cause. A diagnosis of substance-induced psychosis is an opportunity to work with the patient to determine and resolve underlying mental illnesses and to discourage a reliance on drugs or alcohol. Because individuals with a history of psychosis have a higher than average suicide rate, early recognition and intervention is extremely important. Introduction Issues related to substance-induced psychosis are important for clinicians to understand so that they can properly assess and determine root cause when patients manifest signs of mental illness. Factors related to substance- induced psychosis vary depending on the patient’s age, type and frequency of drug used. Early intervention by a qualified and knowledgeable health clinician is critical to help patients obtain the needed treatment and to avoid patient risk of harm to self and harm to others. A high risk factor that clinicians should always keep at the forefront of medical management in cases of substance-induced psychosis is that individuals with a history of psychosis can have a higher than average suicide rate. Substance-Induced Psychosis: Epidemiology Psychosis is a mental state where a person’s mental capacity to recognize reality, communicate, and relate to others is impaired. This interferes with life demands. It manifests as disorientation, disorganized thought processes 1 ce4less.com ce4less.com ce4less.com ce4less.com ce4less.com ce4less.com and often can include varied forms of hallucinations. An estimated 13 to 23 percent of people experience psychotic symptoms at some point in their lifetime, and 1 to 4 percent of people will meet the criteria for a psychotic disorder.2 Substance-induced psychosis is commonly known as toxic psychosis, which is a condition that can be attributed to psychosis as a result of substance use. -

In this article, we have reviewed the literature on the subject while depicting the case of a 63-year-old female patient who suffered from an intracerebral hemorrhage in the right basal ganglia and thalamus two weeks after a COVID-19 diagnosis and who developed a visual hallucinosis shortly after.
