    Elizabeth Peyton (American, b. 1965) – Artist Resources Peyton at Gladstone Gallery in New York Peyton at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac In 2008, one of Peyton’s muses, musician Jarvis Cocker, talked with the artist for Interview Magazine about photography, creativity, and what she is drawn to in her subjects. “It was something I wanted to know existed—that people could be heroic or could come from anywhere and make great things out of themselves…I wanted to highlight that. I felt like there weren’t pictures in the world of people who did things like that-pictures which were going to last.” The interview was published to celebrate an exhibition of Peyton’s photography at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut. 2008 also saw Peyton’s first retrospective tour internationally, at the New Museum in New York followed by The Walker Art Center and Whitechapel Gallery in London. “The paintings are about the person, very much, and my feelings for them. But it is a transformative process. To see the work as autobiographical is just a little bit too literal to me somehow,” Peton tells The Gentlewoman in a 2013 profile about Peyton, 1999 her rise to fame, love of music, literature, and art. Introduction Elizabeth Joy Peyton (b.1965) is one of the most prominent artists working today. She paints still lifes and landscapes, but above all, portraits: of friends, of lovers, heroes, admirations, inspirations and fascinations. Her subjects include artists, activists, actors, athletes, dancers, musicians, queens, princes, politicians and poets. Captured from life, memory, literature and imagination, through found images and photographs, amongst many things her art explores love, individuality, beauty and the passing of time This exhibition surveys Peyton’s work, with a particular focus on the last ten years. Created in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition is accompanied by a series of displays within the Collection, positioning Peyton’s art within the context of historic portraiture. Having occupied a central place within visual art since coming to prominence in New York in the early 1990s, her work demonstrates an intensely personal and increasingly expansive understanding of the genre.     In the early 1960s, I had the good fortune of meeting a lot of artists. Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, Trisha Brown and Carolee Schneeman. These artists and painters were the real influence on me, as a poet. Whether it was a performance or a painting, they did what arose in their minds, and made it happen. It occurred to me that poetry was seventy five years behind painting and sculpture and dance and music. I said to myself, if these artists can do it, why can’t I do it for poetry? (John Giorno in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist, 2002) "UGO RONDINONE : I LOVE JOHN GIORNO" is the first retrospective of the life and work of the American poet John Giorno (born 1936, lives and works in New York), a key figure of the American underground scene of the 1960s. The exhibition is conceived by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone (born 1964, lives and works in New York) as a work in its own right. I structured the exhibition in eight chapters, each representing a layer of Giorno’s multifaceted work. Taken as a whole, they reflect how he works and help us to understand the dual influences that American culture and Buddhism had on his life and art, Rondinone explains in a conversation with Florence Ostende in December 2014. Credit Benjamin Norman for The New York Times The 35-year survey of the work of Lukas Duwenhögger at Artists Space provides a full, mesmerizing view of a German artist, now 60 and based in Istanbul, who is bare- ly known in this country. Mr. Duwenhögger is a sly, seductive stylist and storyteller, adept at figurative painting as well as film, sculpture and suavely domestic instal- lations — all guided by a decorative sensibility that is both between-the-wars and among cultures. Alternately theatrical and intimate, with a palette of saturated pas- tels as complex as their narratives, his paintings especially depict a gay subculture at once conjured, allegorical and real. His larger subjects include human connection and vulnerability. Courtesy the artist and Gladstone Gallery, New York and Brussels / Photography by EPW Studio, NY The National Portrait Gallery, London is to stage the first-ever major exhibition to focus on the untold story of the women of Pre-Raphaelite art as part of a 2019 autumn season that also includes the first exhibition situating leading contemporary artist Elizabeth Peyton within the historical tradition of portraiture. Both exhibitions will include works on public display for the first time in the UK. 160 years after the first pictures were exhibited by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1849, Pre-Raphaelite Sisters (17 October 2019 – 26 January 2020), explores the overlooked contribution of twelve women who contributed to the movement in different ways. Featuring new discoveries and unseen works from public and private collections across the world, the exhibition reveals the women behind the pictures and their creative roles in Pre-Raphaelite’s successive phases between 1850 and 1900. Women, such as Joanna Wells (nee Boyce), a Pre-Raphaelite artist in her own right whose work has been largely omitted from the history of the movement, together with Marie Spartali Stillman and Evelyn de Morgan, whose art also shaped the development of Pre-Raphaelitism alongside their male counterparts.
