The certificate of incorporation of the Institute was signed on the 20th day of May, 1930. The first academic appointments, naming Albert Einstein and Oswald Veblen as Professors at the Institute, were approved two and one- half years later, in initiation of academic work. The Institute for Advanced Study is devoted to the encouragement, support and patronage of learning—of science, in the old, broad, undifferentiated sense of the word. The Institute partakes of the character both of a university and of a research institute j but it also differs in significant ways from both. It is unlike a university, for instance, in its small size—its academic membership at any one time numbers only a little over a hundred. It is unlike a university in that it has no formal curriculum, no scheduled courses of instruction, no commitment that all branches of learning be rep- resented in its faculty and members. It is unlike a research institute in that its purposes are broader, that it supports many separate fields of study, that, with one exception, it maintains no laboratories; and above all in that it welcomes temporary members, whose intellectual development and growth are one of its principal purposes. -

OSWALD VEBLEN June 24,1880—August 10, i960 BY SAUNDERS MAC LANE SWALD VEBLEN, geometer and mathematical statesman, spanned O in his career the full range of twentieth-century Mathematics in the United States; his leadership in transmitting ideas and in de- veloping young men has had a substantial effect on the present mathematical scene. At the turn of the century he studied at Chi- cago, at the period when that University was first starting the doc- toral training of young Mathematicians in this country. He then continued at Princeton University, where his own work and that of his students played a leading role in the development of an outstand- ing department of Mathematics in Fine Hall. Later, when the In- stitute for Advanced Study was founded, Veblen became one of its first professors, and had a vital part in the development of this In- stitute as a world center for mathematical research. Veblen's background was Norwegian. His grandfather, Thomas Anderson Veblen, (1818-1906) came from Odegaard, Homan Con- gregation, Vester Slidre Parish, Valdris. After work as a cabinet- maker and as a Norwegian soldier, he was anxious to come to the United States. -

ARMAND BOREL May 21, 1923–August 11, 2003 Elected to the NAS, 1987 Armand Borel was a leading mathematician of the twen- tieth century. A native of Switzerland, he spent most of his professional life in Princeton, New Jersey, where he passed away after a short illness in 2003. Although he is primarily known as one of the chief archi- tects of the modern theory of linear algebraic groups and of arithmetic groups, Borel had an extraordinarily wide range of mathematical interests and influence. By Mark Goresky Mathematical objects and results bearing Borel’s name include Borel subgroups, Borel regulator, Borel construction, Borel equivariant cohomology, Borel-Serre compactification, Bailey- Borel compactification, Borel fixed point theorem, Borel-Moore homology, Borel-Weil theorem, Borel-de Siebenthal theorem, and Borel conjecture.1 Borel was awarded the Brouwer Medal (Dutch Mathematical Society), the Steele Prize (American Mathematical Society) and the Balzan Prize (Italian-Swiss International Balzan Foundation). Beckenbach Book Prize
MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA BECKENBACH BOOK PRIZE HE BECKENBACH BOOK PRIZE, established in 1986, is the successor to the MAA Book Prize established in 1982. It is named for the late Edwin T Beckenbach, a long-time leader in the publications program of the Association and a well-known professor of mathematics at the University of California at Los Angeles. The prize is intended to recognize the author(s) of a distinguished, innovative book published by the MAA and to encourage the writing of such books. The award is not given on a regularly scheduled basis. To be considered for the Beckenbach Prize a book must have been published during the five years preceding the award. CITATION Nathan Carter Bentley University Introduction to the Mathematics of Computer Graphics, Mathematical Associa- tion of America (2016) The Oxford logician Charles Dodgson via his famed Alice character rhetorically asked, “Of what use is a book without pictures?” And most of us believe that a picture is worth a thousand words. In the same spirit, Nathan Carter in his Introduction to the Mathematics of Computer Graphics has given us a how-to book for creating stunning, informative, and insightful imagery. In an inviting and readable style, Carter leads us through a cornucopia of mathematical tricks and structure, illustrating them step-by-step with the freeware POV-Ray—an acronym for Persistence of Vision Raytracer. Each section of his book starts with a natural question: Why is this fun? Of course, the answer is a striking image or two—to which a reader’s impulsive response is, How might I do that? Whereupon, Carter proceeds to demonstrate. -

THE ANNUAL MEETING IN MIAMI The seventieth Annual Meeting of the American Mathematical Society was held at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, and Mi ami, Florida, on January 23-27, 1964, in conjunction with meetings of the Mathematical Association of America. All sessions were held at the University of Miami with the exception of the Gibbs Lecture, which was held at the Everglades Hotel. Registration at the meeting was 1493, including 1196 members of the Society. The thirty-seventh Josiah Willard Gibbs Lecture was delivered by Professor Lars Onsager of Yale University at 8:00 P.M. on Friday, January 24, 1964. His lecture was entitled Mathematical problems of cooperative phenomena. President Doob presided. Professor Deane Montgomery of the Institute for Advanced Study delivered his retiring Presidential Address, Compact groups of trans formations at 9:00 A.M. on Friday, January 24. Professor Montgom ery was introduced by Professor R. L. Wilder. By invitation of the Committee to Select Hour Speakers for Sum mer and Annual Meetings, hour addresses were given by Professor Morton Brown, of the University of Michigan, at 9:00 A.M. Thurs day, January 23, and Professor Heisuke Hironaka of Brandeis Uni versity of 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 24. Professor Brown, who was introduced by Professor J. H. Curtiss, spoke on Topological manifolds. Professor Hironaka spoke on Singularities in algebraic varieties and was introduced by Professor R. D. James. OSWALD VEBLEN Professor Oswald Veblen Died at His Summer Home In
OSWALD VEBLEN BY DEANE MONTGOMERY Professor Oswald Veblen died at his summer home in Brooklin, Maine, on August 10, 1960. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth Richardson Veblen, and by four sisters and one brother. He was born in Decorah, Iowa, on June 24, 1880, and was the oldest of a family of eight children, four girls and four boys. He was one of the most influential mathematicians of this century, partly through his contributions to the subject and partly through the effect of his remarkable judgment and force of character. He had an unfailing belief in high standards and was prepared to stand for them irrespective of his own comfort or convenience. He contributed in a decisive way not only to excellence in mathematics but to excel lence in American scholarship in general. He was one of those mainly responsible for carrying Princeton forward from a slender start to a major mathematics center. There can be but very few who play such a large part in the development of American and world mathematics. Shortly after his death the faculty and trustees of the Institute for Advanced Study joined in writing of him as follows: "We are acutely conscious of the loss to the Institute and to the world of learning of a major figure. "Oswald Veblen was of great influence in developing the Institute as a center for postdoctoral research, but this was only a part of a career extending back for half a century to the time when scholarly work was in its infancy in Princeton and the United States. -
