  • Film Appreciation Prof. Aysha Iqbal Department of Humanities and Social Science Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
Film Appreciation Prof. Aysha Iqbal Department of Humanities and Social Science Indian Institute of Technology, Madras Lecture - 13 Deewar (Refer Slide Time: 00:28) Good morning everyone. So, today’s class, you will find little different from whatever we have been doing so far. It is on melodrama and I will be discussing a very popular Hindi film. I am sure all of you have heard of it or you are familiar with it; this is Deewar, 1975 film, directed by Yash Chopra and written by the great screen writing is screen writer Duo Salim Javed. The movie star Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor, and Nerupa roy, who played their mother. Now, why Deewar? Generally, when we talk about popular cinema, which impersonates a national myth; we talk about Meheboob Khan’s Mother India, which is one of the mile stones in Hindi cinema. I would like to talk about Deewar which I think, you know, came at a particular time in Indian history. Also, it was the time of certain national appeals especially, the emergency in India, during that periods. So, it was a turbulent time. It was also historically, a very important period in our history. So, this is the significance of Deewar and of course, the fag that it gave birth to it, consolidated Amitabh Bachchan’s position as one of the greatest superstars or leading men in Indian cinema. It is still referred to very frequently, seriously and sometimes, frivolously, particularly in a Hindi movie called Loins of Punjab and A.R.Rehman to in his academy award, acceptance speech, quoting the famous line from Deewar [FL].

  • Coalition Between Politics & Entertainment in Hindi Films: A
Journal of Education & Social Policy Vol. 1 No. 1; June 2014 Coalition between Politics & Entertainment in Hindi Films: A Discourse Analysis Dr. C. M. Vinaya Kumar Assistant Professor & Head Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Krishna University Machilipatnam-521 001 91-9985085530 Romesh Chaturvedi Sr. Lecturer Amity School of Communication Amity University, Lucknow Campus Uttar Pradesh, 91-9721964685 India Shruti Mehrotra Sr. Lecturer Amity School of Communication Amity University, Lucknow Campus Uttar Pradesh, India 91-9451177264 Abstract The study attempts to explore dynamics of political discourse as reflected in Hindi films. Political messages in most Hindi films are concealed within entertainment. Films use thrilling & entertaining plots mixed with political content in order to convey their messages to the public. Films not only reflect reality but also construct the political ideology. The public is generally unaware of the extent to which they are being influenced, managed and conditioned by the political discourses in Hindi films. This study attempts to conduct the discourse analysis on the Hindi film “Chakravyuh” to find how politics and entertainment are merged together to influence public opinion. The film is based on the dark, largely-unexposed world of the Naxalites fighting for their land and dignity. Discourse analysis of the film will help in exploring how an entertaining film can carry a meaningful message. For over 40 years in India, since the emergence of the Naxalite rebellion, cinema has drawn inspiration from the rupture caused by this iconic movement in Indian political history. Hindi films seem to have woken up to Naxalism, or Maoism, as it is more commonly known today.

Kervan – International Journal of Afro-Asiatic Studies n. 21 (2017) Item Girls and Objects of Dreams: Why Indian Censors Agree to Bold Scenes in Bollywood Films Tatiana Szurlej The article presents the social background, which helped Bollywood film industry to develop the so-called “item numbers”, replace them by “dream sequences”, and come back to the “item number” formula again. The songs performed by the film vamp or the character, who takes no part in the story, the musical interludes, which replaced the first way to show on the screen all elements which are theoretically banned, and the guest appearances of film stars on the screen are a very clever ways to fight all the prohibitions imposed by Indian censors. Censors found that film censorship was necessary, because the film as a medium is much more popular than literature or theater, and therefore has an impact on all people. Indeed, the viewers perceive the screen story as the world around them, so it becomes easy for them to accept the screen reality and move it to everyday life. That’s why the movie, despite the fact that even the very process of its creation is much more conventional than, for example, the theater performance, seems to be much more “real” to the audience than any story shown on the stage. Therefore, despite the fact that one of the most dangerous elements on which Indian censorship seems to be extremely sensitive is eroticism, this is also the most desired part of cinema. Moreover, filmmakers, who are tightly constrained, need at the same time to provide pleasure to the audience to get the invested money back, so they invented various tricks by which they manage to bypass censorship.

In broader terms, this lecture course also furnishes an introduction to the culture and history of modern Hindi-language cinema, the study of modern Indian history, some of the broader theoretical literature on nationalism and patriotism, and the study of popular culture. The use of films and visual material in the study of history has become increasingly popular over the course of the last three decades; however, this course does not view cinema merely an as instrument for the study of Indian history. Popular cinema, this lecture presumes, is an intrinsically interesting subject of inquiry, even if Indian scholars have come to this realization long after the Indian public had already declared its unmitigated affection for the movies.
