Belmont High School BELMONTIFB #2017-54, Application for Designer Services, 24 May 2017 Jonathan Levi Architects 24 May 2017 Gerald R. Boyle, MCPPO Director of Facilities 19 Moore Street Belmont, MA 02478 Dear Representatives of Belmont and MSBA Designer Selection Panel: Jonathan Levi Architects It is with pleasure and commitment to once again serve the Town of Belmont’s youth, teachers, parents, and community that Jonathan Levi Architects (JLA) submits our team’s qualifications to provide designer services for the Belmont High School Project. Why choose Jonathan Levi Architects? Extensive Public School Experience JLA brings a national reputation for budgetary responsiveness, design excellence, technical expertise and active principal-level engagement on public school projects. Our many successes relate exactly to Belmont’s project; including these three recent MSBA grant program projects: x Belmont’s 575-student, PK-4 Wellington School: two schools within a school and fully daylit, with an accelerated design schedule. To address the lack of on-site swing space, this project was created on tight site with critical traffic patterns, requiring ingenuity to accommodate building footprint, vehicles, and outdoor program areas. x Weston’s Field School, grades 4-5: open, visible learning/project-based learning floor plan with central ‘Information Commons’ for student collaboration and innovative team teaching clusters. An example where the educational program vision heavily drove our architecture. x Boston’s Dearborn STEM Middle/High School Academy: among the first purpose-built STEM schools in the country, this new school features industry leading programming and spatial configurations specific to 21st-century project-based, collaborative, student-driven learning, which includes interaction between humanities and STEM programs. Proven Long-Standing Team Collaboration & Capacity JLA has brought together our trusted principal engineers at Garcia Galuska DeSousa (GGD), Richmond So and CDW to form a highly effective design management group with extensive experience centering on programming and design for schools. JLA will dedicate to this project four senior staff members with long, successful track record working together on >$100M, multi-phase, public and school construction projects on occupied sites within firm schedules and set budgets. Proven Success in Building Community Consensus JLA is highly attuned to the needs of diverse communities and has a successful track record of providing community process, communication and consensus building. In our previous work in Belmont, JLA constructed a highly effective partnership with the Town’s committees, political leadership, schools, and citizens. In Boston, the Dearborn STEM Middle/High School will bring one of the nation’s most advanced K-12 educational facilities to the heart of the Roxbury neighborhood. Through sophisticated listening and dialogue, JLA developed the right process to suit that community’s needs and aspirations giving a sense of ownership to all involved. 266 beacon street boston ma 02116 tel 617.437.9458 fax 617.437.1965 www.leviarc.com National Leader in 21st Century Educational Programming & Design A father of five public-school-educated children and an educator with over 28 years of direct Town of Belmont 24 May 2017 teaching experience, Lead Designer and Principal in Charge, Jonathan Levi FAIA is highly attuned to Page 2 of 2 the perspectives of Belmont’s youth, parents, and teachers. He has extensive experience partnering with educational planners including Mr. Frank Locker with whom he has completed prior visioning programs. Unique Recognition for Design Excellence in Public Schools In 2013, Belmont’s Wellington School received the Harleston Parker Medal for the most significant building of any type built in the Boston area in the last ten years – only the third public school so honored in 90 years. The Jury had this to say, “The beauty of the Wellington School is emphatic; it sits comfortably and elegantly in its place, fits the character of the community without overwhelming it, and willfully supports the scale of its participants.” Weston’s Field School has been named one of only two Eastern U.S. ‘Best of 2015’ projects by the Architects Newspaper alongside the new Whitney Museum. At the same time, JLA has married innovative design to innovative cost control measures to build fiscally responsible schools that favorably compare with costs of other MSBA grant construction projects. CM-at-Risk & MSBA Process Knowledgeability The JLA team has extensive experience in working with the MSBA and in the alternative CM-at-Risk delivery public school procurement process. Our project for the Wellington School was among the first CM-at-Risk public school projects in the state, including early packages and BIM coordinated drawings. Leader in Sustainability Technology JLA has completed three MA-CHPs/LEED certifiable projects in the last five years. Our 300 geothermal well, zero carbon energy system at the LEED Gold 400,000sf Federal Office Building in Andover, MA is among the largest in the country. Certifications JLA certifies that Jonathan Levi FAIA, Philip Gray AIA, and key engineers selected for this project are registered and licensed to work in MA and have a thorough knowledge of the MA State Building Code, the regulations of the MA Architectural Barriers Board and Americans with Disabilities Act, environmental permitting and compliance laws, as well as laws governing MA public design and construction. With over 30 years of experience, Levi registered Architect #6192, is a ‘qualified designer’ in MA and has obtained recertification as a MCPPO in October 2014 to be renewed this year. With our preferred consultants: CDW and Richmond So, JLA expects to exceed the minority and women-owned business participation goals for this project. We stand ready to return our proven expertise and commitment to public school design excellence to bear on the educational needs of the Town’s youth and the creation of a beautiful, durable and effiefficientcient assetasset forfor thethhe long-termlon benefit of the Belmont community.
