It is a 7.5 acre conservation area, owned by the City of Key West. The KWBG requested that The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) conduct a floristic evaluation of its natural areas and grounds and to provide recommendations. Study Design On August 9-10, 2005 an inventory of all vascular plants was conducted at the KWBG. All areas of the KWBG were visited, including the newly acquired property to the south. Special attention was paid toward the remnant natural habitats. A preliminary plant list was established. Plant taxonomy generally follows Wunderlin (1998) and Bailey et al. (1976). Results Five distinct habitats were recorded for the KWBG. Two of which are human altered and are artificial being classified as developed upland and modified wetland. In addition, three natural habitats are found at the KWBG. They are coastal berm (here termed buttonwood hammock), rockland hammock, and tidal swamp habitats. Developed and Modified Habitats Garden and Developed Upland Areas The developed upland portions include the maintained garden areas as well as the cleared parking areas, building edges, and paths. -

Woody and Herbaceous Plants Native to Haiti For use in Miami-Dade Landscapes1 Haiti occupies the western one third of the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic the remainder. Of all the islands within the Caribbean basin Hispaniola possesses the most varied flora after that of Cuba. The plants contained in this review have been recorded as native to Haiti, though some may now have been extirpated due in large part to severe deforestation. Less than 1.5% of the country’s original tree-cover remains. Haiti’s future is critically tied to re- forestation; loss of tree cover has been so profound that exotic fast growing trees, rather than native species, are being used to halt soil erosion and lessen the risk of mudslides. For more information concerning Haiti’s ecological plight consult references at the end of this document. For present purposes all of the trees listed below are native to Haiti, which is why non-natives such as mango (the most widely planted tree) and other important trees such as citrus, kassod tree (Senna siamea) and lead tree (Leucanea leucocephala) are not included. The latter two trees are among the fast growing species used for re-forestation. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s Flora of the West Indies was an invaluable tool in assessing the range of plants native to Haiti. Recently natural plant-based medicines have received major attention in the medical research field and act as a vital part of healthcare. Also, these natural bioactive compounds are the basic molecules for the new drug synthesis. But the researchers are facing problems such as species identification, isolation of active compounds and their medicinal action in different therapeutic fields in research. This work investigated the completed research and its outcomes of the identification of new biologically active plants and their active parts. Based on the social problem, this review also investigated the Simarouba Glauca plant extraction, isolation of active compounds from the plant and phytochemical analysis of the reported research outcomes. Because, global health challenging illnesses like cancer, diabetes and AIDS are increasing due to the lacking of synthetic medicines. So the new researchers are concentrating on natural plants, algae and sea living organisms for drug development. Hence this work concentrated to identify the usefulness of Simarouba Glauca plant and different work carried on the plant products. -

PLANT PROFILE that is native to Florida in the United States, southern Florida, South America, and the Lesser Antilles. Common names include paradise-tree, dysentery-bark, and bitter wood. Its seeds produce edible oil. Different parts of the tree are used to treat various diseases. The plant has been reported to contain many important phyto constituents which have significant pharmacological importance. The aim of this paper is to highlight the Pharmacological importance of different parts of the plant simaruba glauca and it may give a good platform for future researcher to carry out the various research activities on simarouba glauca plant. Index Terms— Simarouba Glauca , Pharmacological Importance, Paradise Tree . I. INTRODUCTION Although in the recent past western medicines rejected the plants as an acceptable source of medicines in favor of those . synthesized in laboratories, yet one in four prescription drugs PLANT PROFILE contain ingredients derived from plants. ABSTRACT: One of the biggest issues faced in today’s health-care and medicine is the threat posed by the rapidly emerging drug-resistant microorganisms. Certain Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, etc. are showing resistance against most of the known antibiotics. These organisms being pathogenic need to be contained, and prevented from causing infections. Since the ‘Drugs of last Resort’ are no longer effective, there is an urgent necessity to search for equally effective therapeutics. In the following study, ethanolic extracts of roots of Hemidesmus indicus and leaves of Simarouba glauca were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis by well-diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration was determined. Further, the isolation and purification of the constituents responsible are under process. Bitterwood, dysentery barks, Laxmi Taru, and Paradise tree are common names. It produces edible oils from its seeds. Various tree sections are used to treat different ailments. The plant contains many essential phyto constituents of major pharmacological significance. The pharmacological review of SG has proven its medicinal value and has different therapeutic qualities such as analgesic, antimalarial, antimicrobial, antitumor, antiulcer, hypoglycaemic, insecticidal, stomachic, and ver- mifuge. Several medically active compounds have been found in the plant. A group of triterpenes called Quassinoids is by far ABSTRACT the most active compound. Further research into these plants can be concluded that these new pharmacophores can be bene- ficial for the improvement of mankind’s health and also helps in combating several other disorders. The purpose of this paper is to showcase the pharmacological importance of Simarouba glauca and it can provide a good forum for future researchers to carry out numerous studies on this particular plant species. -
