  • Key Historical Moments
KEY HISTORICAL MOMENTS GETTING INTO THE WIFU: 1951 TO 1954 1951 A group led by Ken Stauffer and Tiny Radar, inspired by columnist Andy Lytle, sends representatives to the off-season Western Interprovincial Football Union meetings to initiate Vancouver’s bid for a team. 1952 WIFU rejects Vancouver’s application when Winnipeg and Regina vote against the idea of a fifth team. 1953 The first annual meeting of the club, held on January 22, 1953 saw Arthur E. Mercer named as the first President. With the help of future Hall of Fame builder Vic Spencer, Vancouver was granted a conditional franchise on the requirements of a 15,000 seat stadium, selling 6,500 season tickets and providing guaranteed travel expenses of the visiting teams. The Lions hire their first head coach Annis Stukus who begins to scout for players without the aid of an expansion draft. 1953 Water boy and future club GM, President and Hall of Famer Bob Ackles is hired. 1954 Empire Stadium opens in time for the 1954 British Empire Games and the Lions’ inaugural season in the WIFU. The Lions first-ever game is a 22-0 pre-season loss to Montreal before 19,371 spectators. 1954 The Lions open at home on August 28, 1954 against Winnipeg and their first ever TD comes a minute before half-time as By Bailey crashes over from a yard out to give BC a 5-1 lead. The Bombers fought back however with a TD to level the score. Two 4th quarter singles eventually gave Winnipeg the victory by an 8-6 count.

Roughrider Head Coaches Craig Dickenson 2019 – Current Craig Dickenson was named the Riders’ head coach January 25, 2019, becoming the 47th head coach in club history. Dickenson is in the fourth season of his second go-round with the Roughriders, spending the last three seasons as the special-teams coordinator. He also previously worked with the Riders special teams during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2018, Dickenson’s special teams group played a key role in the Riders success. Kicker Brett Lauther connected on 90.0% of his field goal attempts – the second highest success rate in franchise history. The special teams unit tied a franchise record with four kick return touchdowns on the season, counting three on punt returns and one kickoff return. Dickenson is in his 17th season as a CFL coach and his 14th as a special-teams coordinator. Before returning to Saskatchewan in 2016, the product of Great Falls, Mont., spent two seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos and one with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Dickenson also previously spent seven CFL seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, serving as their special- teams coordinator in five of those seasons, and one campaign with the Montreal Alouettes. He is a two-time Grey Cup champion, having won CFL titles with the Eskimos in 2015 and the Stampeders in 2008. The former University of Montana kicker also was a special-teams assistant for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders (in 2010) and the San Diego Chargers (2000-01). Before embarking on his pro coaching career, Dickenson also worked in the university ranks at Montana and Utah State.

  • Willie Fleming's Spectacular 1963 Season in The
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 14, No. 6 (1992) 9.7 Copyright © 1992 Robert Sproule All Right Reserved In 1954 Canadian Football League rookie running back Jackie Parker (from Mississippi State) set the record for the highest rushing average in a season. On a minimum of 100 carries, O’ Jackie ran the ball 117 times for 925 yards for and unheard average of 7.9 yards per carry, and that put Mr. Parker in third place in the rushing derby that year and only 118 yards behind Howie Waugh of Calgary who set a record as the first 1,000 yard rusher with 1043 yards. Six year later in 1960, the Great Leo Lewis with Winnipeg Blue Bombers, rushed 106 times for 923 yards for an record average of 8.7 yards per carry. But this story is not about Parker or Waugh but rather the runner who finished fourth in rushing, even ahead of Leo Lewis that year. Willie “the Wisp” Fleming of the BC Lions and his spectacular 1963 season. He wasn’t a big back by today’s standards, or even by the standards of his day. At 5 foot 9 inches tall and 175 pounds, Willie Fleming from Iowa University was considered a lightweight but he did have one advantage in playing halfback with the BC Lions. He was the blood relative of the Roman God Mercury and his great speed would be his fame. That year, 1960, Willie became the first BC runner to go over the 1,000 yard barrier with 1,051 yards and an average of 8.4 yards per carry.
