JOB DESCRIPTION REGIONAL NURSE EDUCATOR DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONAL HEALTHCARE AUGUSTA UNIVERSITY

I. POSITION TITLE: Regional Nurse Educator

II. SUPERVISED BY: Director of Education

III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor degree in from an accredited school and licensed as a in the State of Georgia. A minimum of three (3) years nursing experience. A valid Georgia Driver’s license. Current BLS instructor certification or will obtain within 6 months of employment. Current ACLS certification or will obtain within 6 months of employment. Security clearance by the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) and the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Travel requirements up to 70% (three to four days/week) of incumbent’s work schedule

IV. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Masters’ Degree in Nursing, Education or Healthcare Administration. Five (5) years of nursing experience.

V. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Regional Nurse Educator is a subject matter expert with the ability to apply principles of teaching, learning and adult education. The position assists in prioritization of individual roles to best meet the education/learning needs of the staff under the direction of the Director of Education. The Regional Nurse Educator will work in conjunction with the Regional Nurse Managers for Adult Health and Regional Health Service Administrators for Adult/Juvenile Health and the Director of Nursing Services for Adult Health and the Chief of Clinical Operations for Juvenile Health to assess learning needs, develop education and orientation programs and evaluate outcomes. The Regional Nurse Educator facilitates optimal patient care through the ongoing participation in clinical practice, staff education, and quality management research.

VI. DUTIES:

• Maintains clinical competency with hands on experience and membership in professional organizations. • Utilizes learning principles in planning and delivering educational programs. • Provides clinical guidance to staff and promotes the level of quality care. • Demonstrates clinical expertise in the execution of the and guides staff in the application of nursing practice. • Interprets and translates the theoretical concepts of nursing into the delivery of nursing care in conjunction with the management team. • Incorporates policy, procedure and protocols into orientation and ongoing education of staff. • Uses clinical expertise to develop and provide orientation for new employees and provides follow-up assessment. • Assesses the needs of the staff to ensure maintained competency. • Evaluates the effectiveness of the training through survey and assessment. • Educates staff on safe environment regulations. • Provides appropriate and timely information to staff as a basis for sound maintenance of clinical competency. • Participates on selected committees. • Assists with monitoring and implementing nursing education activities recommended by the Continuous Quality Committee to improve nursing quality of care. • Utilizes evidence-based standards to identify and define staff competencies • Respond 24/7 for consultation as needed. • Other duties as assigned

VII. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Normal sitting, pulling/pushing, kneeling, stooping, bending, reaching, talking, and hearing. Standing and sitting for long periods of time. Must be able to quickly respond to medical emergencies within four (4) minutes. Must be able to drive long distances.

VIII. INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports directly to the Department of Correctional Healthcare Director of Education. Works collaboratively with the Regional Nurse Managers for Adult Health and Regional Health Service Administrators for Adult/Juvenile Health and the Director of Nursing Services for Adult Health and the Chief of Clinical Operations for Juvenile Health.

IX. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of a wide range of complex nursing concepts, principles and practices to perform nursing assessments of considerable diversity to include mental health, medical surgical, ambulatory and care. • Ability to train and orient nursing staff in a clinical setting. • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to sudden changes in schedules and work requirements. • Extensive knowledge of NCCHC, ACA, TJC and other regulatory patient care and safety standard • Ability to exhibit leadership, characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability, for integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines, influencing the organization’s mission and delivery. • Demonstrate positive communication skills, sharing information clearly and concisely. • Display the ability to foster positive working relationships with management and leadership across all disciplines as well as with nursing at all levels. • Experience in Correctional Health care • Proficient in MS Office, Word, PowerPoint and Excel. • Sound Written and Verbal communication • Experience recording trainings.
