IntroducIng the Hindu College

Gobardanga Hindu College, currently situated at Gobardanga, North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, is an institution to reckon with. Established in 1947, on the 27th day of November, the college has moved through diverse terrains of , politics and culture. A few months after independent was born, it is said that a number of eminent, inspired and energetic academicians moved from Daulatpur College (located in the Khulna district of present Bangladesh and once part of the Jessore district of undivided Bengal) to Gobardanga with the promise of spreading the light of knowledge therein. Very few prominent educational institutions were then found to exist in the neighbourhood of Gobardanga. The Khantura Boys’ School was one such premiere institution. The notable teachers and scholars of Daulatpur College began taking their first classes in the premise of Khantura Boys’ School. The science department (including a small laboratory and office) was set up in the charitable clinic of Harinarayan Rakshit. The journey thus began amidst crises but that was soon overcome. The keenness of the educators urged various people from different castes and sects of the vicinity to come forward with their significant contributions. The Mukherjees of Gobardanga- the wealthy landlords donated part of the land on which the college stands today. Annada Prasanna Mukhopadhyay, the second eldest son of Sarada

Prasanna Mukhopadhyay (belonging to the family of landlords) was extremely enthusiastic about learning. The college library today still bears testimony to this fact. About 10,000 books along with priceless wooden shelves and almirahs were donated by the family to the college. Here is indeed a rare archive of books and journals, original newspaper clippings from the pre-independent era; grants and donations came from other sources. Certain eminent Brahmins appreciated the endeavour and created scope for further development in this field. The college received special grants and emoluments from the Tambouli community of Gobardanga. The Tamboulis were a group of small land owners in Gobardanga. They were also involved in trade and commercewith mainstream business centres in Kolkata. They yielded vast fortune and distributed a handsome part of it amongst the new learners. Though there were only a few subjects taught in the initial phase of the college, today classes are held in about 23 subjects in Arts/Humanities,Science and Commerce streams. The departments of Bengali, Education and History have already introduced post-graduation courses in their respective subjects. A large number of students are therefore being benefitted. The Bengali Department has already introduced a post- graduation course in the subject and a large number of students are therefore being benefitted. Other departments have also expressed the desire to introduce PG course in the near future. Gobardanga Hindu College is one of those few colleges to have an adjoining B.Ed section in its vast campus in the district. Conventional subjects which have been present from the early years since the inception of the B.Ed department have been included along with other modern subjects as per the new curriculum of NCTE. Gobardanga Hindu College has changed and transformed from its older days with the passage of time. One of the significant features has been the gradual increase in the number of female students. Along with this is obviously the prominent rise in the number of lady teachers in the college. It is a matter of pride that the college has been able to contribute to and make a mark in the cause of woman’s emancipation in a locality that is not fully urbanised. Modernisation has provided scope for further research in the college premises. Many teachers are engaged in doctoral and post-doctoral research in various subjects. Modern classrooms, teaching aids and new gadgets facilitate the systems of teaching and learning most effectively. A lush green campus, eternal enthusiasm of all the members of the college, and past and present students add to the vision of learning in which tradition walks hand in hand with individual talent. Novelty is sought without sacrificing conventions as the institution marches ahead to strive towards excellence. It was awarded an “A” grade by NAAC in 2005& 2015. The Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, has selected a handful of academic institutions to receive funds under RUSA scheme, of which our college is a proud receipent. The promises continue to extend far along the path in which unity plays its part. A long journey lies ahead for all and the desire to fulfil the myriad dreams remains eternally strong, for as Robert Browning put it: “A man’s reachshould exceed his grasp or what’s heaven for?”
