Mamaku Messenger June Editor:- Lyn Fleet Next Deadline 2017 Email:- [email protected] 26th June, 2017 Printed with the support of NMF Rotorua Lakes Council Mamaku School Possum Challenge. 20 teams rose to the challenge and braved the elements on what could only be called a typical winter weekend. Showing all the elements in a maer of 3 days. Cold, wind, rain, frost and the eventual, sunshine. Some waited with sausage in hand for the ute loads of possums, hares, rabbits, wallabies, stoats, ferrets, 4 blind mice. ( not in the count but a rodent all the same) and a couple of turkeys. As they arrived hunt- ers produced their largest possums weighed, had their lots categorised, counted and recorded to produce a total of 298 as well as a trailer of rabbits, wallabies, stoats, and a ferret As well as the challenge there was a lively and hilarious aucon of goods (supplied many local business- es) by Charles Sturt which raised an extra $920 to the amount raised on the day. All welcome to the Mamaku Garden Circle’s June Meeng, to be held at Cheryl Conn’s residence on Monday 8th June, 2017 Commencing at 1.00pm Sheryl’s home is located on the right-hand side of 45 Karamu Street, Mamaku. A discussion will centre on Podocarps—a vi- tally interesng group of trees about which a lot of misinformaon requires clearing up. Also if you are uncertain as to the classifica- on of angiosperms and gymnosperms then there is a golden opportunity to find out more about them. It is interesng to note that pollen buried for a hundred million years in the Antarcca is idencal to pollen some of New Zealand’s podocarp trees provide today. DROP IN. Even when Mamaku put on one of its bleakest days the hardly locals and expats arrived at the Hall to catch up with old friends and enjoy the friendly rivalry of cards, bowls and scrabble and the usual brain teaser. Gail won the raffle and Annee aced the brain teaser. Thanks to everyone who helped with the dy up. Next month’s Drop in will be a pot luck lunch with hot soup to enjoy on the almost shortest day of the year. All the usual things but some hot soup and buns to celebrate. So see you at 10am on the 20th June. WHAT ’S ON IN JUNE. With Jean. Adult Korowai every Sunday 1-4pm Memorial Hall. Kids Chess Group. Many plants have the ability to re- pel predators intent on eang them, (apart from us) and those plants, which have developed this ability to a high degree, can give some form of pest control, while others that enjoy the company of others grow beer if planted together.
