The Hilltoppers
2013 Induction Class The Hilltoppers The Hilltoppers started out as a vocal trio consisting of Jimmy Sacca (born 26 July 1929 in Lockport, New York), Seymore Spiegelman (born 1 October 1930 in Seneca Falls, New York) and Don McGuire (born 7 October 1931 in Hazard, Kentucky) who were all students together at the Western Kentucky University in the town of Bowling Green. Sacca was acquainted with a pianist by the name of Billy Vaughn (born 12 April 1919 in Glasgow, Kentucky) who although considerably older than the trio of friends fitted their vocal style well and was drafted into the group as a full time member. He brought with him a song he had written called "Tryin" which the foursome recorded and sent the tape to a local radio DJ who in turn drew it to the attention of Randy Wood, the head of Dot Records in Nashville, Tennessee who duly signed the Hilltoppers to the Dot label. The single was a slow burner, breaking region by region but eventually secured a place in the top 10, peaking at no.7. They adopted a college look of beanies and letter sweaters that would become their trademark and appeared on Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town in October 1952 and followed this with The Perry Como show in November as well as appearances with Patti Page, Kate Smith, Sammy Kaye and Milton Berle. Jimmy Sacca had been called up for military service and the Hilltoppers went into the studio to record a series of tracks that could be released while he was away.

1425. You Belong To My Heart Backgrounds Of S. Radic "You Belong to My Heart" is the name of an English version of the Mexican bolero song "Solamente una vez" (Only One Time). This song was composed by Mexican songwriter Agustín Lara and premiered by singer Ana María González and tenor José Mojica in the 1941 film Melodías de América. The original Spanish version was then very popular in Mexico and Cuba and was recorded by many of the greatest Bolero interpreters. Cover versions of "Solamente una vez" have been made by many artists including Sara Montiel, Daniel Rodríguez, Quartetto Gelato, Arielle Dombasle, Benny Moré, Julio Iglesias, Roberto Carlos, Chucho Valdés, Plácido Domingo, Marty Robbins, Lucho Gatica, Guadalupe Pineda, Roland Shaw & His Orchestra, Luis Miguel, Cliff Richard and The Shadows. Bing Crosby and the Xavier Cugat Orchestra recorded a Billy Vaughn (1919-1991) was an American musician version of the song for Decca Records in 1945 and and orchestra leader. AMERICANA AT IT’S BEST. #bgky Ernest Hogan Father of Ragtime (1860-12 May 1909), minstrel show and vaudeville entertainer and songwriter, was born Reuben Crowder (or Crowders) in the African American “Shake Rag” district of Bowling Green, Kentucky. In 1895 Hogan published his first song, “La Pas Ma La,” based on a comic dance step he had created as the “pasmala” while still with the Pringle troupe. Featuring a jerky hop forward followed by three quick backward steps, it met with a warm reception in the African American community. The next year, however, Hogan became a national star with the song for which he was to be known for the rest of his life, “All Coons Look Alike to Me.” Adapted from a song he had heard in a bar in Chicago and written for the white show Widow Jones, it was the hit of the season, ultimately selling over a million copies. Following this triumph, Hogan returned to Black Patti, billed as “The Unbleached American,” for a season, and after that began a tour of Australia and Hawaii with Curtis’s Afro-American Minstrels. Costarring with minstrel Billy McClain in My Friend from Georgia, a musical comedy that he cowrote, he was warmly received throughout the run. In 1900 Hogan worked with youthful singer Mattie Wilkes, fifteen years of age at the time, in The Military Ma in New York City. He and Wilkes were reportedly married for a short time. Hogan was said to have been later married to a woman named Louise (maiden name unreported), who worked with him in organizing concerts in New York City in 1905.
