The only difference is that NCSettings just integrates with the already existing Notification Center interface which means less gestures to remember and more information and functionality all in one place. While Apple will allow you to download them on your iPad, they're tiny and when you expand them to 2x to fill the screen, they're grainy and look like crap. This is where RetinaPad comes in handy. Once you've installed RetinaPad it'll automatically detect any traditional iPhone app that you open on your iPad and automatically upscale it to not look like crap. While it doesn't completely fill all of the screen like a native iPad app would, it makes it look a heck of a lot better and a lot more bearable. If you've got a Mac running OS X Mountain Lion, you're probably familiar with the way Notification Center works on it. While this method isn't really viable on a screen as tiny as the iPhone, it is on the iPad or iPad mini. I've never been a fan of how Notification Center pulls down on the iPad. It's almost as if they took the default iPhone Notification Center layout and stuck it on the iPad. It's not customized for the iPad and just feels like a cheap port. MountainCenter gives you the same kind of experience on your iPad or iPad mini that you get on your Mac with Notification Center. Simply pop into Settings and set up a gesture to trigger MountainCenter and you're good to go. Slide to the right or left to reveal Notification Center on the side just like you can in Mountain Lion. It just feels better than the default implementation of Notification Center for the iPad. Not to mention you'll be able to see more data at a glance than the default provides. $2.99 - Cydia Search Link. Emblem. Just like Notification Center feels half baked, so does the default way notification banners are shown on the iPad and iPad mini. While they span the entire length of the top of the screen for iPhone, they don't on the iPad and again, feels like a super cheap port. It works on the iPhone but doesn't fair so well on the iPad or iPad mini. While you could always wait for Apple to make improvements to banner notifications on the iPad, you can also download Emblem which solves the problem right now. Instead of seeing the stock banners that don't look so great on the iPad to begin with, Emblem turns notification alerts on the iPad into OS X and growl like banners that will show on the upper right hand side of the screen. Tapping on one will launch the program the notification was received from. If you receive more than 3 notifications, Emblem will combine them into stacks that you can scroll through instead of taking up half the screen with banners. While the iPad can be a great business tool, the keyboard still needs some work. Typing on it, especially when you make errors, can be daunting and slow at times unless you're using a keyboard accessory. Even that can still be annoying when reaching for the screen to correct errors or add content. SwipeSelection aims to solve these problems by adding some additional functionality to the virtual keyboard. For example, instead of using your finger to move cursor around with the magnifying glass, SwipeSelection simply lets you drag your finger back and forth or up and down on the actual keyboard to move the cursor position. It doesn't seem like a big deal but when correcting and editing text, it's loads faster than moving your finger all the way to the top of the screen again. Another really nice action happens when you hold down shift and drag your finger. You'll notice that this highlights the selection of text that you are dragging over. Pros and Cons of Jailbreaking Your iPad. Normally, an iPad or other iOS devices such as iPhones or iPods can only download Apple-approved apps that are available in the App Store. Jailbreaking is a process that frees the iPad from this limitation, opening up the device to additional features and apps available outside of the App Store, including apps that Apple rejected for various reasons. It is clear from the Library of Congress ruling that the body believes jailbreaking is okay. It just wants a better definition of a tablet. Apple suing an individual over it would not only be a PR nightmare, but it would also allow the courts to decide the issue. Courts have sided with the people on similar issues. However, legality aside, jailbreaking does terminate the warranty of the device. A new or refurbished iPad comes with a one-year warranty with the option to extend it by a year with AppleCare+, so if your iPad is new, jailbreaking could prevent you from getting a free repair if your device malfunctions. Good Reasons to Jailbreak. Despite the downsides to jailbreaking an iPad, there are several reasons you may want to do it. Access to Non-Apple Apps. The obvious reason to jailbreak is to get access to those apps that Apple did not approve for the App Store. Apple imposes strict guidelines on what apps can or can't do. Programs that access certain features of the device or use them in unapproved ways won't last long (if at all) on the App Store. For example, apps that use the 3D Touch features available on certain iPhone models to turn them into kitchen scales didn't stick around for long. Apple feared people would break their phones if they kept setting things on them. But places like Cydia will let you load these apps and more. More Customization Options. Also generally failing Apple's approval process include a lot of tools that customize your iPad experience. These choices include different system fonts for the device, customized sounds, custom app placement on any part of the home screen grid, or even customizing the home button to shut down all of your running apps at once. Greater Control. Finally, because jailbreaking frees up access to parts of the device that Apple would normally restrict, it gives people much greater control. It grants greater access to the file system and even unlocks communication from another device, which means you can connect your iPad to your PC and have greater control over what you can see and do. Good Reasons Not to Jailbreak. It's not all benefits, of course. Along with voiding your warranty, jailbreaking introduces costs, and even risks, to your device. Here are some of the downsides. Risk of Bricking the iPad. Modifying any device can be risky, but unauthorized processes like jailbreaking can pose a greater threat. It is possible to "brick" your device during the process if you don't follow the instructions correctly, rendering it useless. If tinkering with your device makes you nervous, you should not be jailbreaking it. Increased Vulnerability to Attacks. While the idea of malware overrunning the Cydia and Icy app stores is sometimes blown out of proportion, the device itself is definitely more vulnerable to attack. Several worms that only affect jailbroken devices have been reported, and because no uniform approval process governs, it is easier for malware to exist in less-regulated app stores. Research the apps you download rather than just reading the app-store description and tapping the install button. Updates Are a Hassle. Updates also become more of a hassle. You can't update a jailbroken iPad without erasing the jailbreak. Every time you update iOS, you'll have to repeat the jailbreaking process, including downloading all of those custom apps again. The sheer process of jailbreaking after major updates may be more trouble than jailbreaking is worth. Increase in Crashes. Another side effect of a jailbroken iPad is that it's more likely to crash. Because apps available for jailbroken devices access features and APIs not available for Apple-approved apps, these features may not be tested as well and may not interact as smoothly. Activator allows you to set quick gestures on your iPad such as double tapping the status bar to bring up a quick compose message or swiping up from the bottom of the screen to toggle on or of Wi-Fi. There's tons of default toggles and gestures to configure and a lot of jailbreak apps will also be compatible with Activator. Just pop into settings and Activator to start customizing gestures. Free - Cydia Search Link. NCSettings. If you want a way to activate quick toggles from your iPad within Notification Center, look no further than NCSettings. It's very similar to SBSettings but a lot simpler in premise and execution. I actually prefer it to SBSettings for toggles since it blends right into iOS 5 like it's meant to be there. Just enable it within Notifications in Settings and then open Notification Center. You'll see a new top row of icons. You can customize the order and what ones show up in Settings and you're done. Super simple and it even looks like something Apple would design stock. Free - Download Now. SBSettings. SBSettings has been around just about as long as jailbreak has. While it was obviously made for iPhone it also works on iPad. It's a great way to add quick toggles, manage memory, clear out running processes to free up memory, and more. If you're on iOS 5 it'll even integrate into Notification Center, just enable it in Settings under Notifications. Since SBSettings has been around so long, there are tons of add-ons, themes, and other enhancements available in Cydia. I personally prefer the look and feel of NCSettings better on the iPad but if you need more than just toggles SBSettings will be a better option. Free - Cydia Search Link. Quasar. Quasar is a nifty little tweak for iPad that allows you to run and view multiple open apps at once. It's very similar to expose on a Mac and aims to provide a desktop-like multitasking experience. Instead of having to run one app at at time, Quasar will open them in individual windows the same way a desktop computer would. Quasar is also tied into the iOS app switcher which means whenever you perform an action like killing an app will kill it but closing a window in Quasar will still allow it to run in the background. $9.99 - Cydia Search Link. Fullscreen for iPad. Fullscreen for iPad is a Safari plugin that not only brings fullscreen browsing to the iPad but adds true multitasking gestures and actions such as two and three finger swiping. By default you'll just have to double tap anywhere on a webpage to enter fullscreen mode. Double tapping again will exit fullscreen mode and bring back the address bar. Apple only allows you to stick 20 apps into a single folder on your iPad. If you're anything like me, you've got tons of games on your iPad. Apps like Folder Enhancer and Infinifolders remove the cap Apple has put in place and will allow you to put as many apps as you'd like inside a folder. Both apps also take it a step further and will allow you to nest folders inside of each other just like you can on a desktop computer. I find this great for games so I can have one main games folder and sub-folders containing different types of games inside of that. Folder Enhancer - $1.99 - Cydia Search Link. Infinifolders - $1.99 - Cydia Search Link. Notification enhancements. IntelliscreenX. While Notification Center was a great addition in iOS 5, it still leaves a lot to be desired. IntelliscreenX will allow you to fine tune notifications on your iPad just the way you'd like. You can even link Facebook, Twitter, RSS, feeds, and more straight in Notification Center. Just tab like you would through pages to view your Facebook Timeline, Twitter feed, and any other service you've linked. Since Apple also left out the default apps on the iPad, you also won't get things like the weather widget within Notification Center. IntelliscreenX supports widgets and allows you to add several such as weather, SBSettings, and more. $9.99 - Cydia Search Link. LockInfo. LockInfo is another notification enhancement app that'll do a lot of the same things IntelliscreenX does. I personally prefer IntelliscreenX over LockInfo due to the Messages+ integration but you may not. LockInfo is just as full featured and functional as IntelliscreenX but in a different package. It offers a bit more fine tuned control over how it behaves than IntelliscreenX in some cases but the general settings are a bit more confusing. If you can get over the initial shock of how many options there really are, you'll realize how powerful it really is. $7.99 - Cydia Search Link. It'll really be up to you which one you choose as both are great notification enhancement options for both iPhone and iPad, but if you need help deciding you can always check out our LockInfo vs IntelliscreenX comparison. Customizing your iPad. Whether you just want to be able to customize the look and feel of your iPad or tweak the overall layout, there's tons of apps in Cydia available to get your iPad looking just the way you want it. Apps like Springtomize 2, Winterboard, and Dreamboard will all help you theme out your iPhone and customize every little aspect of the overall look and feel.
