Redskins.......1,3 Cross Country......4 Steve Nash.............4 Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes tries to catch a pass while Redskins defender tries to block it. On Monday, Nov. 14, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Washington Redskins had a showdown. The Redskins won the toss and decided to receive. On the kickoff the Steelers tried to be sneaky and do an onside kick. IT DIDN’T WORK!!!! The Skins scored a field goal on that drive. On the Steelers drive Ben Roethlisberger threw an interception. The Skins scored a field goal on the drive. When the Steelers finally got something going and blocked a punt and recovered it in the final two minutes, they scored a touchdown. At the half, the score was the Steelers 10 and the Redskins 6. Continued on page 3 SPORTS X-TREME PAGE1 VOLUME 1, NO. 3 NOVEMBER24, 2008 World Series 2008 to Philadelphia. The first game there was on By: Tony Fratto 5J rain delay for two hours and was won by the Phillies, 5-4. In the second game of the series, the Phillies blew away the Rays, 10-2. The third game in Philadelphia was played until the 6th inning. The score was tied 2-2 and was suspended because of rain. This was the first time that this has ever happened in a World Series. The rest of the game was played two days later and the delay didn’t help Tampa Bay at all. One of the big problems contributing to Tampa Bay’s loss, was that Evan Longoria, their best hitter, didn’t get a single hit in the The World Series started on series. He clearly had trouble with Wednesday, Oct. 22. This match-up between Philadelphia's pitching. the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies was very surprising. This is because this was the Rays' first World Series, and the Phillies' first since 1983. In the American League Championship Series, Tampa Bay narrowly beat the Red Sox in game 7. The Phillies beat the LA Dodgers in five games. Unlike the American League Championship Series,(ALCS), the National League Championship Series, (NLCS), could have been more exciting. In Tampa Bay, the Phillies won game one, 3-2. In game two, the Rays came through and won, 4-2. Then the series moved Photo by Alex Ganote, 5J Bears Basketball Is Back! By: Chris Engvall and Jerry Walker 5J BOYS GIRLS Starting in the first week of December This year the girls have only one the boys will start their season. They play every returning player. They will play every Tuesday Thursday against D.C. Public schools in the NW starting in December. They play with the same region. Here is the lineup: Kordell Brown, rules as the boys. Here is the team: Nina Cameron Goode, Benjamin Hartheimer, Kevin Clemente, Maisy Dombo, Breyonna Evans, Holston, Aaron Lewter, Lennard Long, Will Jennifer McLish, Felisa Michael, Angela Murphy, Nehemiah Scott, Liam Walsh, and Montero, Asha Pappajohn. Ruby Shevlin, and Robert Wright. Jordan Wright SPORTS X-TREME PAGE2 VOLUME 1, NO. 3 NOVEMBER24, 2008 Steelers-Redskins Game By: Tony Fratto 5J The Steelers and the Redskins matched up for Monday Night Football on November 3rd for an exciting game. The game started off with a bang when the Steelers started the game with an onside kick that back fired on them. The Steelers were able to hold the Redskins to a field goal. The Steelers failed to score on their first offensive drive of the game, throwing an interception. The Redskins made another field goal their next time on offense, making their last score of the game. The Steelers took control of the game from that point on, possibly being inspired by the thousands of Terrible Towel waving Steelers fans who showed up for the game. The Steelers started their scoring in the second quarter with a field goal. After they blocked a Redskins punt, the scored a touchdown and took the lead for the rest of the game. The Steelers added two more touchdowns in the second half behind 2nd string quarterback, Byron Leftwich, after Ben Roethlisberger injured his shoulder on a sneak into the end zone. The biggest reason for the Steelers' win, was the performance of its defense. They dominated the Redskins' offense, shutting down Clinton Portis, allowing him only 55 yards rushing. Also sacking quarterback Jason Campbell seven times, and intercepting two of his passes -- the first interceptions he has thrown all season. Overall, the Steelers' defense was the best it had been all year. A Defensive Game Continued from Page 1 If you watched this game at home you would have had a little political action. Presidential candidates, Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain, were interviewed during the half-time show. They were not at the game though. They were in their respective hometowns. Now, back to football. On the opening drive of the second half the Steelers took out Ben Roethlisberger and put in their backup Byron Leftwich. This was because Big Ben hit his hand on a helmet; he didn’t come back. They scored on a Willie Parker touchdown. The Steelers missed the extra point to make it 16-6. Soon, on another Steeler drive, Leftwich marched down the field and threw a touchdown pass to Nate Washington. The Redskins kept on getting very close. The Redskins scored a touchdown when Jason Campbell scrambled. Wait, Wasn’t the final score 23-6? Yes. Mike Tomlin, the Steelers’ coach challenged the touchdown. The referees said that Jason Campbell’s knee was down on the one-yard line. So now it was 4th and goal on the one-yard line. The Redskins had a turnover on downs. The rest of the game was pretty much the Redskins getting close and turning it over on downs. In the end, the final score of the game was the Pittsburgh Steelers 23 and the Washington Redskins 6. SPORTS X-TREME PAGE3 VOLUME 1, NO. 3 NOVEMBER24, 2008 Lafayette Dominates Cross Country By: Sam Meroney 5J This year’s cross country team has been doing very well. It has dominated in all of the meets so far. The boys have been controlling except for two challenges from Payne who have been pushing the A team. The girls have been getting really hard challenges from Stuart-Hobson. All of the Lafayette runners have decreased their time. Lafayette pushes really hard. The boys have always dominated and the girls have to make their second half of the race comebacks. Lafayette has run very well in the meets because of the really hard training we do at practice. Most of the courses are really hilly but Lafayette gets a lot of practice with them. Lafayette has won all of the meets for about five years straight including the really hard championship races. But the nicknames get even more creative — Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback BYRON LEFTWICH gave his teammate MAURICE JONES-DREW the nickname “Pinball” after the way defenders bounced off the running back during training camp last year. Ranging in origin from athletic ability to size or demeanor, these nicknames give a creative insight into the players they have been given to.
