Between 1551 and 1558, he published a four-volume masterwork, the Historiae Animalium, now seen as a bridge between ancient, medieval and modern science. It covered quadrupeds, amphibians, birds, and a fourth volume on fish (Fischbuch, Zurick, 1575, PHI 00359) from which this image is taken.

175175 1832 ~ 2007 This year Grange Cricket Club proudly celebrates its 175th anniversary. From its foundation in 1832 to the present day, the Grange has been one of the most influential and important organisations in Scottish Cricket. EARLY CRICKET IN SCOTLAND Cricket was probably first played in Scotland, by Hanoverian troops, in the mid 18th Century with games being played in garrison towns like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Aberdeen, Perth and Kelso. Later, English craftsmen and artisans coming to work in Scotland brought the game to many more towns. Greater integration took place between the two kingdoms, many of Scotland’s leading families chose to educate their sons at English schools, and the influence of the game spread. Scottish cricket can be traced back to a ‘Grand Match’ played at Schaw Park Alloa on the 3rd September 1785. The match was between Col. Talbot’s XI and the Duke of Atholl’s XI, a fairly elite affair. More casual games were played on Bruntsfield Links, Glasgow Green, the Inches at Perth, Arbroath and Glenpark, Greenock. In the 1820s Bruntsfield golfers complained about ‘wickets’ being pitched on the fairway at Bruntsfield Links. One of the first official clubs in Edinburgh was The Brunswick Club formed in 1830, predominantly by students and staff at Edinburgh University. They were a wandering Club which existed until the 1960s and in the early years of Grange Cricket Club’s existence, they provided the main opposition. THE FOUNDERS In the spring of 1832, three young men were attending a meeting of The Edinburgh University Speculative Society, an influential legal, philosophical and political think tank, which still exists today.

  • A Social History of the Cricket Tours to New Zealand in the 1930S
Confirming Tradition: Confirming Change – A Social History of the Cricket Tours to New Zealand in the 1930s Owen Mann Programmes of the cricket tours to New Zealand in the 1930, courtesy of the New Zealand Cricket Museum. A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master in Arts in History Victoria University of Wellington 2011 i Abstract This study examines the eight tours to New Zealand by visiting cricketing teams between 1930 and 1939. There were four tours made by the Marylebone Cricket Club along with inaugural visits by the West Indies, South Africa, an England Women's XI, and lastly the Julien Cahn XI. These tours were major events for contemporaries, attracting large crowds and much attention in the press. They are a focus for an examination of New Zealand’s relations with other parts of the world, specifically other parts of the Empire. The tours were major sporting events, but also prompted wider popular and public discussion of nationhood, race, gender and the role of sport in society and the Empire. For the New Zealand public in the 1930s, cricket was a game that connected them with their British and imperial heritage during a period of uncertainty. For the cricket community of New Zealand the tours were massive undertakings due to the substantial financial commitment required and poor results, but the tours continued because of the strong associations and core beliefs that cricket nurtured and because of a love of the game. Though these tours contained few moments of on-field achievement for the hosts they say much about how New Zealanders of that decade viewed themselves and others.
