This blue “a” signifies that the designer of the work was also an architect. Did you know that many designers were trained as architects? Some architects designed furnishings for their buildings in order to create one unified look. In German this is called Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art. Currently more than 650 objects by 100 architects are on view. In total, Kirkland Museum has the design work of over 125 architects in the collection. The architects come from 25 different countries and span all of the design periods represented in the Museum, from Arts & Crafts to Modern and Postmodern. The Museum’s namesake is among the most important Colorado and regional painters of the 20th century. Kirkland created all the paintings in this gallery, as well as in his studio & art school building at the north end of the Museum. Kirkland was born in Convoy, Ohio, graduated from the Cleveland School of Art and moved to Denver in 1929 as the Founding Director of the present School of Art at the University of Denver. He also founded the Kirkland School of Art, as well as the Art Program (now the Department of Visual Arts) at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD). He painted and resided in Denver for the rest of his life.

Mondays @ The Museum launches on November 14, with Art of the West: Whitney and Plains Indian Masterworks. The lecture features Karen McWhorter and Rebecca West. McWhorter is the Scarlett Curator of Western American Art at Whitney Western Art Museum, Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, and leads their curatorial activities and programs. West is Curator, Plains Indian Cultures, Plains Indian Museum, also at Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and works with the people, objects, ideas and programs that define the museum. All CONTENTS of us who have maintained good health, secure housing, and financial stability during these difficult times should be thankful and do what we can to help those who have been less fortunate. FROM THE CHAIR 1 Like most U.S. institutions of higher education, KU shut down its campus in mid-March in response to the pandemic and moved courses and final exams DISTINGUISHED 4 online, requiring students and instructors to adapt quickly to an unsettled and ALUMNI AWARD unsettling situation. KU’s resilient art history faculty and GTAs did a remarkable job of adjusting their teaching methods and accommodating students whose lives RETIREMENT 6 and academic pursuits were disrupted. The pandemic forced KU to cancel many significant spring events, including in-person Commencement. The art history MURPHY LECTURE 8 department regrettably canceled our annual Amsden Awards Ceremony, at which SERIES we recognize undergraduate students for superior academic performance and FACULTY NEWS 10 present graduate student awards. Other events were rescheduled and shifted to an online format, including the interdisciplinary symposium “Visual and Material ALUMNI NEWS 16 Culture of the Silk Road(s)” (see page 9).
