Stories about anything, anything at all. Just stories. After all, who can vacuum a room and concentrate on it? I tell myself stories…They keep me working, my stories.” —“Memory and Delusion,” Shirley Jackson The home space exists at the center of Shirley Jackson’s writing, presented to readers as a force of consistent fascination for characters. The domestic setting is one where Jackson manages to (or, attempts to) break free from enforced societal structure. Her work deconstructs the Freudian double, offering sardonically humorous takeaways that give way to liminality and horror alongside happiness. Fear in the everyday through a domesticized setting tangles and blurs the rigidly imposed lines of humor/horror, the mother/writer, housewife/public figure, and demon/angel of the house. -

Citing James G. Frazer's anthropological study of primitive societies, The Golden Bough (1890), many critics observe that the story reflects humankind's ancient need for a scapegoat, a figure upon which it can project its most undesirable qualities, and which can be destroyed in a ritually absolving sacrifice. Unlike primitive peoples, however, the townspeople in "The Lottery"--insofar as they represent contemporary Western society--should possess social, religious, and moral prohibitions against annual lethal stonings. Commentators variously argue that it is the very ritualization that makes the murder palatable to otherwise decent people; the ritual, and fulfilling its tradition, justifies and masks the brutality. As a modern parable on the dualism of human nature, "The Lottery" has been read as addressing such issues as the public's fascination with salacious and scandalizing journalism, McCarthyism, and the complicity of the general public in the victimization of minority groups, epitomized by the Holocaust of World War II. -

Jackson's five main novels, Hangsaman, The Bird's Nest, The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, were critically exam ined in order of their composition to locate and identify her worlds of fantasy. Once these worlds were located, it was necessary to discover why her characters sought refuge in them. What did these worlds of fantasy have to offer that could not be found in the real world? In all five novels, Jackson's answer was that people are forced to search for love and happiness in fantasy when these goals are impossible in the real world. -

Known for her short story collection The Lottery and Other Stories (1948), the American author Shirley Jackson (1916–1965) has been an inspiration for subsequent Gothic- fantastic and horror fiction writers. This dissertation analyzes Shirley Jackson’s novels— Hangsaman (1951), The Bird’s Nest (1954), The Sundial (1958), The Haunting of Hill House (1959), and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962)— in light of the genre of the “Female Gothic,” a term coined by Ellen Moers in Literary Women (1976) to refer to literary works written by women in the Gothic mode since the eighteenth century. -

Master of Arts (English ),December, 1972, 82 pp., bibliography, 28 titles. The problem with which this paper is concerned is that of tracing Gothic elements in the six complete novels of Shirley Jackson (1919-1965)• Jackson's novels, magazine reviews of these novels, articles on Gothicism, and histories of English literature form the sources of data for this research project. The first chapter relates a brief history of Gothicism, dividing it into two types: terror-Gothic and horror-Gothic. Terror-Gothic emphasizes the elements of suspense and the supernatural, whereas horror-Gothic emphasizes a complex villain-hero and a state of moral ambiguity. Traits the two share are an interest in psychological abnormality, an isolated setting, and a brooding atmosphere. In the following chapters, each of the novels is subjected to examination for its Gothic qualities. The novels are considered in chronological orders The Road Through the Wall, a narrative about an isolated community; Hangsaman« an initiation story of a seventeen-year-old girl on the brink of insanityi The Bird's Nest, another psychological study of a young woman suffering from schizophrenia j The Sundial, an account of a smaller isolated group in an old mansion} The Haunting of Hill House, a combination of psychological imbalance and the trappings of frightening isolation} and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, a similar combination of emotional disturbance and social ostracism intensified by an ironically sunny cheerfulness. -

The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 16 (Autumn 2017) Helping Eleanor Come Home: A Reassessment of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House Brittany Roberts Critics have most frequently considered Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House (1959) a work of gothic genre fiction.1 Critics like Roberta Rubenstein and Judie Newman refer to the psychological dissolution of Eleanor Vance, the novel’s protagonist, as the inevitable consequence of Eleanor’s relationship with her overbearing and controlling mother, for whom, as the novel opens, Eleanor has cared for the last eleven years of her life. At the novel’s beginning, Eleanor is downtrodden and miserable. Jackson writes, Her years with her mother had been built up devotedly around small guilts and small reproaches, constant weariness, and unending despair.
