FY 16 | Straub at a Glance Fact Sheet FY 16 | Straub At A Glance Fact Sheet About Straub Medical Center Founded in 1921, Straub Medical Center is a fully integrated not-for-profit health care provider with a 159-bed hospital in Honolulu, a network of neighborhood clinics and a visiting specialist program that reaches throughout the state of Hawai‘i. With more than 400 employed or contracted physicians who are leaders in their fields, Straub provides its patients with expert diagnoses and treatments for more than 32 different medical specialties, including bone and joint, heart, cancer, endocrinology/diabetes, family medicine, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, internal medicine, women’s health, vascular and urology. Straub is home to the Pacific Region’s only multi-disciplinary burn treatment center. The hospital consistently brings new technologies and innovative medical practices to Hawai‘i, such as minimally invasive cardiac surgery and total joint replacement. Patients will fall into one of four risk tiers* based on scoring across several dimensions including demographics, disease burden pulled form visit diagnoses and the problem list, past utilization and others. Adult and pediatric patients have slightly different scoring. To make it easy to identify patients in a busy clinic, the risk tier is clearly displayed in Epic by color coding according to the corresponding tier. “Prediction is a key first step towards planning and developing a patient’s health care needs. It helps cue physician to follow through with appropriate preventive and chronic care services,” said Dr. Monica Price. A new risk stratification tool means new care delivery implications. We are already experiencing a shortage in medical supplies in the state of Hawai’i. We will be critically short on patient ventilators as soon as the virus continues to spread. We implore you to issue a ​ shelter-in-place order effective immediately and involve us, Hawai’i physician experts, in decision making. As members of the healthcare community in Hawai’i, we feel that our concerns have been disregarded. It appears the officials elect to not interact with our professional community to listen to our recommendations. But when it comes to severe municipal transmission and a potential surge of COVID-19 cases, you will ask us to work overtime without proper PPE and put our own lives and the lives of our beloved family members at risk.
