It provides a machine abstraction and hardware-agnostic instruction sets, where a high-level programming language can target the compilation to the Wasm instead of specific hardware architecture. The JavaScript engine implements the Wasm specification and recompiles the Wasm instruction to the target machine instruction where the program is executed. Technically, Wasm is similar to a popular virtual machine bytecode, such as Java Virtual Machine (JVM) or Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL). -

Object-Oriented Programming Object-Oriented Programming Basics With Java In his keynote address to the 11th World Computer Congress in 1989, renowned computer scientist Donald Knuth said that one of the most important lessons he had learned from his years of experience is that software is hard to write! Computer scientists have struggled for decades to design new languages and techniques for writing software. Unfortunately, experience has shown that writing large systems is virtually impossible. Small programs seem to be no problem, but scaling to large systems with large programming teams can result in $100M projects that never work and are thrown out. The only solution seems to lie in writing small software units that communicate via well-defined interfaces and protocols like computer chips. The units must be small enough that one developer can understand them entirely and, perhaps most importantly, the units must be protected from interference by other units so that programmers can code the units in isolation. The object-oriented paradigm fits these guidelines as designers represent complete concepts or real world entities as objects with approved interfaces for use by other objects. Like the outer membrane of a biological cell, the interface hides the internal implementation of the object, thus, isolating the code from interference by other objects. For many tasks, object-oriented programming has proven to be a very successful paradigm. Interestingly, the first object-oriented language (called Simula, which had even more features than C++) was designed in the 1960's, but object-oriented programming has only come into fashion in the 1990's. -

We will first describe our proposal for specifying events in a logic program, and then we will present an implementation that uses an interesting communication mechanism called \signals & slots". The idea is to provide the application programmer with a mechanism for handling events. In our design we consider how to define an event, how to indicate the occurrence of an event, and how to associate an event with a service predicate or handler. Keywords: Event Management. Events are useful in those applications where pieces of code can be executed automatically when some condition is true. Therefore, event management is helpful to develop agents that react to certain occurrences produced by changes in the environment or caused by another agents. Our aim is to support event management in logic programming. An event can be emitted as a result of the execution of certain predicates, and will result in the execution of the service predicate or handler. For example, when programming a robot behaviour, an event could be associated with the discovery of an obstacle in its trajectory; when this event occurs (generated by some robot sensor), the robot might be able to react to it executing some kind of evasive algorithm. -

Lisp, a functional language inspired by Alonzo Church’s lambda calculus, was one of the first programming languages developed at the dawn of the computing age. Statically typed functional languages such as OCaml and Haskell are newer, but their roots go deep—ML, from which they descend, dates back to work by Robin Milner in the early ’70s relating to the pioneering LCF (Logic for Computable Functions) theorem prover. Functional programming has also been enormously influential. Many fundamental advances in programming language design, from garbage collection to generics to type inference, came out of the functional world and were commonplace there decades before they made it to other languages. Yet functional languages never really made it to the mainstream. They came closest, perhaps, in the days of Symbolics and the Lisp machines, but those days seem quite remote now. Despite a resurgence of functional programming in the past few years, it remains a technology more talked about than used. It is tempting to conclude from this record that functional languages don’t have what it takes. They may make sense for certain limited applications, and contain useful concepts to be imported into other languages; but imperative and object-oriented languages are simply better suited to the vast majority of software engineering tasks. -
