Accessed from Swinburne Research Bank: http://hdl.handle.net/1959.3/45472 Pitching the American Dream Review of Mad Men Season 1 Ellie Rennie January 8, 2009 If I was a man in possession of a time machine that could transport me back to 1960, I know what persona I would adopt when I arrived: I would be detached, charming, disarming and – most of all – cynical. To intelligent women I would say things like: ‘What you call love was invented by guys like me to sell Nylons’. Then I would order another Martini and ask the black waiter about his life just because no‐one else will for another decade or so. I’d direct my cynicism at the post‐war domestic idyll, but also at the beatniks who believed just as naively in its opposite. The protagonist of Mad Men, Don Draper (Jon Hamm), isn’t a time‐traveller but he is a man ahead of his time, created with a twenty‐first century viewpoint. He shows us both how far we have come in five decades and how far we haven’t. ‘Mad Men’ is a term coined by the advertising executives and copy‐writers of Madison Avenue to describe themselves. -

I mean, it’s almost quaint to think about now, but drone warfare was a major controversy until the public decided we had bigger fish to fry. Armed drones were first used in late 2001, and deployed from bases in Pakistan and Uzbekistan to assassinate terrorist leaders inside Afghanistan, before our nation turned its lonely eyes in the sky to Iraq. By 2009, the CIA claimed to have killed more than half of their most wanted Al Qaeda suspects using UAVs. In 2013, in the first public death toll provided by the US government for UAVs, walking corporate lobbying opportunity in a senator suit Lindsey Graham claimed there had been 4,700 casualties at the hands of UAVs. It is an astounding number. And that was 6 years ago! The government isn’t inclined to update us, so who knows the number at this point? 00:00:59 Ben Host We are told that the use of drones saves lives, and by removing American soldiers from the battlefield, it’s hard to argue that it doesn’t at least save the lives of frontline American soldiers. But while we can keep soldiers out of physical harm’s way, we cannot remove them from the battle, or from making battlefield decisions.
