  • Belmont Park Spring Meet Looks Better Than Ever
Belmont Park Spring Meet Looks Better than Ever By David Grening Daily Racing Form Benoit & Associates Beholder is expected to ship in for the $1 million Ogden Phipps, where she could face Close Hatches and Princess of Sylmar. ELMONT, N.Y. – Former Southern California-based racing executive Martin Panza survived his first winter in New York. Oh, yeah, and the weather was tough, too. After a difficult Aqueduct winter/spring meet in terms of quality and quantity, Panza hopes for bigger and better things when Belmont Park opens Thursday for its 54-day spring/summer meet, which runs through July 13. “Bigger is better” certainly will be a theme for the meet, highlighted by a beefed-up Belmont Stakes Day program June 7. Already the highlight of any Belmont Park spring/summer meet, Belmont Stakes Day will be must-see viewing, with 10 stakes totaling $7.7 million and a total of 13 races worth $8 million, making it the second-richest day on the North America racing calendar behind only Breeders’ Cup Saturday. In addition to the Belmont Stakes, which got a purse enhancement to $1.5 million, the card will include the $1.25 million Metropolitan Handicap and the $1 million Ogden Phipps, a race that is expected to draw Beholder, Princess of Sylmar, and Close Hatches, the stars of last year’s 3- year-old filly division who have already combined to go 4 for 4 this year. The June 7 card also features the $1 million Manhattan, $750,000 Acorn, $750,000 Just a Game, $500,000 Brooklyn Invitational, and $500,000 Woody Stephens.

  • Steven Crist: Belmont Sets Table for Exciting Summer at Saratoga
Steven Crist: Belmont Sets Table for Exciting Summer at Saratoga By Steven Crist Daily Racing Form Barbara D. Livingston Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice (above) could face Kentucky Derby champion Orb and Preakness hero Oxbow in the Travers at Saratoga. The Belmont spring/summer meeting, which ends Sunday after an 11 1/2-week run that began April 26, had its moments of very good racing but settled little in the way of establishing clear front-runners for the heart of the racing season ahead. This is not entirely a bad thing, as it set the stage for an even more competitive than usual Saratoga with leadership of every division there for the taking. The Belmont meet included eight Grade 1 stakes (Saratoga will have 16, with nine more during the Belmont fall stand), contested over just four cards, since there were three on Memorial Day (Acorn, Phipps, Metropolitan) and three on Belmont Stakes Day (Just a Game, Manhattan, and Belmont), with the June 22 Mother Goose and July 13 Man o’ War completing the Grade 1 lineup. One race that seems worthy of an upgrade consideration is the Grade 2 Suburban, which lost its Grade 1 status a few years ago but remains as strong as other Grade 1’s for older males around the country. It doesn’t seem quite right that the meeting’s only Grade 1 dirt race for older males is the one-mile Metropolitan. It could also be argued that there should be a Grade 1 sprint at the meet and there is a case to be made that the $400,000 True North and $350,000 Woody Stephens, both currently Grade 2’s, deserve upgrades.

Bill Oppenheim, May 8, 2013-Four Classics FOUR CLASSICS Let=s begin with Orb, only the fourth Grade I/ Grade II-winning colt in 10 crops by the amazing Malibu Moon. You bet he=s amazing--he started out at the Pons Brothers= Country Life Farm in Maryland for a $3,000 fee, as a 3-year-old in the year 2000 (and what a great job they did with him, by the way), and look where he is now. As you might imagine, he=s now the number two sire in North America, with only G1 Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom=s sire, Orb Leroidesanimaux, ahead of Horsephotos him. The gap was $1.9-million yesterday (click here--YTD General Sire list–click box for NA sires only), but with 166 runners this year, compared to 49 for >Leroi,= this is only going to have one outcome. Right now Malibu Moon is a big favorite to become North America=s Leading Sire this year. He must have always shown them a lot as a racing prospect. He was bred by Spendthrift=s now-owner B. Wayne Hughes way before he acquired (and restored) Spendthrift, and made his debut for trainer Mel Stute over 4 1/2 furlongs at Hollywood Park in April as a 2-year-old, finishing second. He then won at five furlongs in :57 2/5 seconds in May. But a slab fracture ended his career, and the Pons boys rolled the dice and bought half. Good call. Malibu Moon moved to Castleton Lyons in 2004, then over to Spendthrift in 2008.
