ASSURANCES As the authorized lead petitioner, I, Scott Barton, hereby certify that the information submitted in this petition for renewal of a California public charter school named The Preuss School UC San Diego (“The Charter School”), and located within the boundaries of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) is true to the best of my knowledge and belief; I also certify that this petition does not constitute the conversion of a private school to the status of a public charter school; and further, I understand that if awarded a charter renewal, the Charter School will follow any and all federal, state, and local laws and regulations that apply to the Charter School, including but not limited to: 1. The Charter School shall meet all statewide standards and conduct the student assessments required, pursuant to Education Code Section 60605, and any other statewide standards authorized in statute, or student assessments applicable to students in non-charter public schools. [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(c)(1)] 2. The Regents of the University of California shall be deemed the exclusive public school employer of the employees of The Preuss School UC San Diego for purposes of the Educational Employment Relations Act. [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(b)(6)] 3. The Charter School shall be nonsectarian in its programs, admissions policies, employment practices, and all other operations. [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(d)(1)] 4. The Charter School shall not charge tuition. [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(d)(1)] 5. The Preuss School UC San Diego receives a greater number of applications than there are spaces for students. To further the School's mission of increasing access to four-year universities for traditionally underserved populations, the School employs the following preferences, which are consistent with Education Code, to determine which applicants will be entered into the lottery. The preferences are that the applicant: (a) be the first in his or her family to graduate from college, (b) demonstrate low income status, and (c) complete the application. Admission is then determined through a public random drawing process and, once all spaces have been filled, other students are placed on a waiting list. To provide college-going access to as many San Diego families as possible, there is no preference for faculty/staff children or sibling preference. Should a student/family opt to leave the school, they are replaced by a student on the waiting list, and thus may not return should their circumstances change. [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(d)(2)(A)-(C)] 6. The Charter School shall not discriminate on the basis of the characteristics listed in Education Code Section 220 (actual or perceived disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic that is contained in the definition of hate crimes set forth in Section 422.55 of The Preuss School UC San Diego Charter Renewal 2018 Page 5 of 56 the Penal Code or association with an individual who has any of the aforementioned characteristics). [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(d)(1)] 7. The Charter School shall adhere to all provisions of federal law related to students with disabilities including, but not limited to, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004. 8. The Charter School shall meet all requirements for employment set forth in applicable provisions of law, including, but not limited to credentials, as necessary. [Ref. Title 5 California Code of Regulations Section 11967.5.1(f)(5)(C)] 9. The Charter School shall ensure that teachers in the Charter School hold a Commission on Teacher Credentialing certificate, permit, or other document equivalent to that which a teacher in other public schools is required to hold. As allowed by statute, flexibility will be given to noncore, non-college preparatory courses. [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(l)] 10. The Charter School shall at all times maintain all necessary and appropriate insurance coverage. 11. The Charter School shall, for each fiscal year, offer at a minimum, the number of minutes of instruction per grade level as required by Education Code Section 47612.5(a)(1)(A)-(D) 12. If a pupil is expelled or leaves the Charter School without graduating or completing the school year for any reason, the Charter School shall notify the superintendent of the school district of the pupil’s last known address within 30 days, and shall, upon request, provide that school district with a copy of the cumulative record of the pupil, including report cards or a transcript of grades and health information. [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(d)(3)] 13. The Charter School shall maintain accurate and contemporaneous written records that document all pupil attendance and make these records available for audit and inspection. [Ref. Education Code Section 47612.5(a)(2)] 14. The Charter School shall, on a regular basis, consult with its parents, legal guardians, and teachers regarding the Charter School’s educational programs. [Ref. Education Code Section 47605(c)(2)] 15. The Charter School shall comply with any applicable jurisdictional limitations to locations of its facilities. [Ref. Education Code Sections 47605(a)(1), (4); 47605.1(d)] 16. The Charter School shall comply with all laws establishing the minimum and maximum age for public school enrollment. [Ref. Education Code Sections 47612(b) and 47610] 17. The Charter School shall comply with all applicable portions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as reauthorized and amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). 18. The Charter School shall comply with the Public Records Act. 19. The Charter School shall comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. 20. The Charter School shall comply with the Bagley-Keene Opening Meetings Act. 21. The Charter School shall meet or exceed the legally required minimum number of school days.

    Preuss School at UCSD to welcome charter class with weekend orientation activities August 21-22 August 13, 1999 Media Contact: Pat JaCoby, (858) 534-7404 or [email protected] Some 420 young students and their parents, representing the initial class of the public charter Preuss School, will attend orientation activities Aug. 21-22 on the campus of their future scholastic home, the University of California, San Diego. The 150 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, selected by lottery from among 503 San Diego County applicants, and their parents will be greeted by Doris Alvarez, principal, and her newly named 11-member faculty. The student body total includes 50 each in the three grades. The majority comes from within the San Diego city school boundaries, but other communities also are represented. Classes begin Sept. 7 at the innovative school--the only public charter school in the state to be established on a university campus--when yellow school buses unload students for attendance in temporary quarters on the Thurgood Marshall College campus. The sleek, temporary classrooms are ringed with computers and look out on the campus eucalyptus groves. Meanwhile, the $13.1 million Preuss School complex of buildings is under construction on UCSD's East Campus, with completion expected next fall. At steady state, in the year 2003, the school will accommodate 700 sixth through 12th graders. The mission of The Preuss School is to prepare its students to win admission to, and succeed at, top level universities. All students in the charter class meet the criteria for Preuss School admission: they come from low income families, with no parent who holds a university degree, and they show the potential to succeed academically.
