If special attention has been given to the question of gender, both in the dominant approach inspir - ing the two MA courses that the programme has offered at Lisbon University1 and in several publications and activities,2 the present volume shows how various identity matters (otherness, nationhood or the aesthetic experience, for instance) were free to evolve from the original agenda, since a multiplicity of perspectives had from the very beginning been central to the programme. First imagined in 1994-95, ‘Studies in Identity’ was shaped, developed and coordinated by Portuguese academics from the Department of English Studies at Lisbon University, in collaboration with scholars from England and Russia, and its researchers often participated in a number of national and international academic events. Isobel Armstrong supported the programme right from the start as its scientific adviser. Even when, during 2004, Alcinda Pinheiro de Sousa, Luísa Maria Flora and Teresa Ataíde Malafaia decided that it was time to build on the experience so far gained and to move on to ‘The Modern Difference’, she agreed to continue with us, as confident and generous as ever. The University of Lisbon, where the coordinators are affiliated as Associate Professors, and the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES), particularly through the support of its scientific coordinator, João Almeida Flor, have provided a congenial atmosphere in which to work on the challenge such research and educational venture has implied. As mentioned before, the productive experience obtained throughout the ten very busy years of ‘Studies in Identity’ encouraged its coordinators to move on to a new transdisciplinary Research Programme within the ongoing epistemo - logical re-evaluation and expansion of English Studies. Sited at ULICES, ‘The Modern Difference’ has been conceived to reflect on, (in)form and act upon the question of the concepts of equality and difference, identity and alterity, and their diverse mutual relations in our modernity, as well as to consider the conflicts that such problematic relations originate.3 The programme also aims at intervening in society, and one of the ways it has chosen to do this is precisely through its network of former MA students of ‘Studies in Identity’,4 most of whose essays the present book is now happy to publish. Their ongoing activities are a very important dimension of ‘The Modern Difference’ research and practical intervention. Introduction 13 Pinheiro de Sousa, João Almeida Flor, Luísa Maria Flora, Salomé Machado and Teresa Ataíde Malafaia. The chronological span of their objects of study, as well as their choice of literary genres and their different approaches, emphasize the variety of the texts. Written after the successful discussion of their theses, the essays in some cases include reflections and afterthoughts that arose as a result of those discussions. However diverse they may be, they all have as a common purpose a carefully researched personal examination of their chosen themes or authors. More often than not they also offer a truly innovative approach. As such, they are significant contributions in their respective areas of research. All of them are Studies in Identity. Marina Estevão Tiago addresses Eliza Haywood’s audacious first novel, Love in Excess, and her ‘attempt to convey behavioural models – both positive and negative – that would reappear in many of her other works’, particularly by making the reader come to terms with an eighteenth-century paradigmatic duality, ‘the desires of the heart versus the restraints of reason’. The essay shows the difficulties that Haywood’s female characters must face in order to achieve any sort of balance between adequate social behaviour and love and desire, and explains how the novelist was able to reconcile the decorum her (male and female) audiences expected, while suggesting that ‘women’s submissive position was a mutable fact and that change was close at hand.’ In ‘Discussing Scottish Nationhood in Robert Burns’ Songs: A Dialogical Perspective’, Paulo César de Almeida Martins concentrates on the harmonious dialogue between text and music accomplished by Burns in his songs and empha sizes how the poet’s development of song culture served to ‘redefine Scottish national identity’. Studying ‘the intertextual dialogue the poet achieved between music and text’, the essayist considers the poet’s use of his profound knowledge of Scottish music and oral tradition and his superior technical expertise when dealing with the written and spoken word and music. CHAPTER CHARLOTTE DACRE’S ZOFLOYA: THE GOTHIC DEMONIZATION OF THE JEW Diane Long Hoeveler I In 1769, an odd little chapbook made its appearance in Hull, entitled The Wandering Jew, or, The Shoemaker of Jerusalem: Who Lived When Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Was Crucified, and By Him Appointed to Wander Until He Comes Again: With His Discourse With Some Clergymen About the End of the World.i This anonymous pamphlet was typical of much millenarian propaganda floating around at the time. But in this work, the Wandering Jew informs the Protestant clergymen that “before the End of the World the Jews shall be gathered together from all Parts of the World, and returned to Jerusalem, and live there, and it shall flourish as much as ever, and that they, and all others, shall become Christians, and that Wars shall cease, and the whole World live in Unity with one another” (7-8). The need to believe that the Other, the Jew, would become “one of us” was indeed strong across Europe, and the thinking was that if they could not be converted, then they could always be killed – for their own good, of course.

    Beyond ‘Monk’ Lewis Samuel James Simpson MA By Research University of York English and Related Literature January 2017 Abstract “What do you think of my having written in the space of ten weeks a Romance of between three and four hundred pages Octavo?”, asks Matthew Gregory Lewis to his mother.1 Contrary to the evidence—previous letters to his mother suggest the romance was a more thoughtful and time-consuming piece—Lewis was the first to feed a myth that would follow him for the rest of his life and beyond, implying he hurriedly cobbled together The Monk (1796) and that it was the product of an impulsive, immature and crude mind to be known soon after as, ‘Monk’ Lewis. The novel would stigmatise his name: he was famously criticised by Coleridge for his blasphemy, Thomas J Mathias described The Monk as a disease, calling for its censure, and The Monthly Review, for example, insisted the novel was “unfit for general circulation”.2 All these readings distract us from the intellectual and philosophic exploration of The Monk and, as Rachael Pearson observes, “overshadow…the rest of his writing career”.3 This thesis is concerned with looking beyond this idea of ‘Monk’ Lewis in three different ways which will comprise the three chapters of this thesis. The first chapter engages with The Monk’s more intellectual, philosophic borrowings of French Libertinism and how it relates to the 1790s period in which he was writing. The second chapter looks at Lewis’s dramas after The Monk and how Lewis antagonised the feared proximities of foreign influence and traditional British theatre.

Nayar The University of Hyderabad Abstract This essay argues that Charlotte Dacre’s Zofloya (1806) presents an interracial sublime in the form of the dissolution of the European home/family. Dacre, I suggest, traces this dissolution to the European woman’s assertion of agency by stepping outside spatial, familial, racial and sexual boundaries. In the first section it examines the crisis of European domesticity where the family and the parent/s fail in their responsibilities toward the children. In section two I suggest that within the dissolving home/family we see the European woman, Victoria, subverting further the dissolution. The arrival of the Moor within the house compounds the blurring of hierarchies and ordering. In the final section I trace the features of the interracial sublime.

ABSTRACT In this thesis, I connect the emergence of the genre of the psychoanalytic case history in the early nineteenth century to the narratives of Charlotte Dacre’s Zofloya (1806), Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), and Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park (1814). At the turn of the nineteenth century, the case history was quickly gaining prominence as both a new genre of writing and a new way of seeing the world. Exploring the connection between the novel and the case, I show how Dacre, Shelley, and Austen employ the methods of the case history while simultaneously deploying various strategies of resistance to the project of thinking in cases. While these challenges differ in each novel, a common thread running through each one is the exploration of performance as a disruption to the case history’s project. By exploring the matrix of commitments particular to the early nineteenth-century case historian, this thesis illuminates the earnest, playful, dissident, and sometimes shocking ways that these novels engage with the project of the case history.

Holmes, 2013 Abstract This project identifies three minor authors in three historical periods, applying deconstructive and queer theory to their writings and to their biographies. The resulting analysis traces gothic effects through other, more familiar texts and figures in order to bring about re-readings that disrupt certain monolithic understandings of literary and sexual identity over time. With a focus on gender transitivity and sexual dissidence, and the insights afforded by queer readings in which queer is framed as a verb, the analysis opens up ways of reading genre through the experimental theories of Deleuze and Guattari. Going beyond identifying major and minor gothic literature, I propose that we understand the literary gothic as a writing machine that produces goth-identified subjects. Tracing concepts like Minor Literature, Rhizome, Becoming-other, the Refrain, and the Body without Organs through fictional and life narratives from Charlotte Dacre, Percy Shelley, Count Eric Stenbock, and Poppy Z. Brite (Billy Martin), I suggest ways in which my reading of minor figures and their works has implications for how we might re-read works by major authors Jane Austen (Northanger Abbey) and Henry James (“The Jolly Corner”), and works by popular author Anne Rice (with a particular focus on the character Lestat and the later novel Tale of the Body Thief).

Charlotte Dacre's Zofloya: A Case Study in Miscegenation as Sexual and Racial Nausea Diane Long Hoeveler Zoßoya, or the Moor was Charlotte Dacre's second novel, written when she was 24 years old (or so she claimed) and the beautiful toast of London literary circles. Her first novel. The Confessions of the Nun of St. Omer, was written when she was eighteen (or 28, depending on what biographical source one credits) and in the grip of an infatuation with the excessive gothicism of Lewis' The Monk} Dacre's novels by 1809 were ridiculed as "lovely ROSA's prose" by Byron, who went on to mock the novels as "prose in masquerade/Whose strains, the faithful echoes of her mind,/Leave wondering comprehension far behind" (English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, 756-58). Despite their improbabilities or more likely because of them, Zofloya was also an early influence on Percy Shelley, whose two youthful gothic novels, Zastrozzi (1810) and St. ¡rvyne; or The Rosicrucian (1811), bear a number of clear resemblances to Dacre's works. She and her four novels and two volume book of poetry are virtually forgotten today, but all of these works—most particularly Zofloya—are important historical documents for understanding how lit- erature participated in the larger culture's attempt to rewrite appropriate feminine behavior as passionless, passively domestic, and pious.
