Football Club Years Of
125YEARS OF Cork Constitution FOOTBALL CLUB Edmund Van Esbeck Published by Cork Constitution Football Club, Temple Hill, Cork. Cork. ii AUTHORS NOTE & ACKNOWLEDGEMENT When the Cork Constitution Club celebrated the centenary of its foundation I had the privilege of writing the history. Now I have been entrusted with updating that chronicle. While obviously the emphasis will be on the events of the last twenty-five years - the most momentous period in the history of rugby union - as a tribute to the founding fathers, the first chapter of the original history will yet again appear. While it would not be practical to include a detailed history of the first 100 years chapter two is a brief resume of the achievements of the first fifty years and likewise chapter three embraces the significant events of the second fifty years in the illustrious history of one of Ireland’s great sporting institutions. There follows the detailed history and achievements, and they were considerable, of the last twenty five years. I owe a considerable debt of gratitude to many people for their help during the compilation of this book. In that regard I would particularly like to thank Noel Walsh, the man with whom I liaised during the writing of the book. -

Given the article’s broad scope and limited space, detailed theoretical elaboration and extensive ex- amination of discursive data will not be possible.1 Rather, the article offers a tentative overview of how these tensions have been manifest- ed in Irish print and broadcast media, and of how they have evinced fantasies and anxieties about sporting achievement as indicative of collective national achievement. The popularized notion of diaspora in Irish society in the 1990s facilitated the transformation of Ireland’s history of emigration into a narrative of emigrant success in the global economy. Release the Hounds
CHAPTER 3 – WALES RELEASE THE HOUNDS etting your rooming arrangements wrong can lead to trouble. Just ask GRudolf Straeuli, the former South African coach, who twinned locks Geo Cronje and Quinton Davids for a Springboks training camp before the 2003 World Cup. It was a marriage made in hell. Two men who were liter- ally fighting for the same place – Cronje, the unreconstructed Afrikaner, complete with his Voortrekker beard, and Davids the ‘Cape coloured’. When Cronje refused point blank to share the same shower as his rival, it sparked a controversy that raged for weeks, causing suspensions, resigna- tions and a storm of ill-feeling. All because of a dodgy rooming list. Things are slightly less volatile in the Irish camp but the rooming list is still something that needs to be got right. Joan Breslin, the IRFU’s International Squad Administrator, decided on the pairings in conjunction with one of the players, rooming secretary David Humphreys. In the past, there may have been a political aspect to certain partnerships. Following a fiery exchange in the 2002 Celtic League final between Leinster and Munster, Eric Miller and Anthony Foley were paired together by the Irish management so they could sort out their differences. Two years later, the situation had changed. In World Cup year especially, Ireland’s international players spent more time sleeping in hotel rooms than they did at home. The most important consideration – no, make that the only consideration – is that your roomie is someone you feel comfortable with. If that means Munster with Munster and Leinster with Leinster, then so be it. -

O'connell, Paul
OLLSCOIL na hÉIREANN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND TEXT OF THE INTRODUCTORY ADDRESS DELIVERED BY: MR TOM KIERNAN, on 2 December 2015 in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, on the occasion of the conferring of the Degree of Doctor of Arts honoris causa, on PAUL O’CONNELL A Sheansailéir, a mhuintir na hOllscoile agus a dhaoine uaisle, It is indeed a great pleasure for me to introduce to you today Paul O’Connell to accept the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Arts from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Of course we also welcome Paul’s father Michael and mother Sheila, and above all his wife Emily and his two children Paddy and Lola. This is a very proud moment for them also. Paul’s achievement in the world of rugby has been immense, but I feel it is important I should mention that he completed 3 of 4 years of his computer engineering degree at the University of Limerick, before deferring the final year of the degree to concentrate on rugby. Rugby was to gain immensely, and he has made a huge contribution to Munster, Ireland and the British and Irish Lions. Paul began playing rugby at around 14 or 15 years of age and was selected for the Irish schools team in 1997/98 when his colleague was one Gordon D’Arcy , with whom he was to play with Ireland on many an occasion. He went on to play on 5 occasions with the Irish U21 side, with Donnacha OCallaghan as a second row partner. During this period he played with Young Munsters and it is fair to say that the club was a springboard for his further success. -
