On account of the many sources from which I have derived my in- formation, and not wishing to burden my page with foot-notes, I have omitted all authorities. 1 have drawn from printed books, from old news- papers and periodicals, and from family records, and when the words of another have suited me, 1 have used them as my own. Allen's Biographical Dictionary, Sprague's Annals, and Duyckinck's of American have been of the service Cyclopaedia Literature, greatest ; but in many instances I have gone to the original sources from which they derived their information. I have also used freely the Centennial Discourses of Professors Giger and Cameron of the College. The book does not profess to be a perfect exhibition of the graduates. But it is a beginning that may be carried nearer to perfection in every succeeding year. Its very imperfection may lead to the discovery of new matter, and the correction of errors which must unavoidably be many. -

XNASMUCH as the obtaining of salvation tlirougli Jesus Christ our Lord, to the glory of the eternal God, is the chief object claims which the attention of man ; and considering, that in the attainment of this object the dispensation of the Gospel is principally instrumental it is manifestly of the highest importance, that the best means be used to insure the faithful preaching of the Gospel, and the pure administration of ail its ordinances. With this view, therefore, institutions for the education of youth intended for the holy ministry, have been esta- blished in all Christian countries, and have been found, by long experience, most eminently conducive to the prosperity of the Church, Hence the founders of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, did, from its very origin, exert themselves with peculiar zeal to establish and endow colleges, academies, and schools, for the education of youth for the Gospel minis- try. Ithad just seventy students, reduced from a recent one hundred twenty. Princeton had about reached its "Nadir"1 under his predecessor, Ashbel Green. This was the period of "secularization" in the colleges along the eastern seaboard. There were many problems of transition to be met and Princeton was slow to meet them.— There were rebellions and serious rioting among the students, discipline and dismissals from the administration. The decline in numbers had become constant and could not be stemmed quickly. It was partly accounted for by the founding of colleges in the south but this "could not explain why at the opening of the academic year, coach after coach rolled through Princeton laden with youths from Virginia, South Carolina or Georgia, on their way to Yale or Harvard/' 2 The University of Virginia had opened with attractive breadth and leniency. Ashbel Green had been called to the presidency in 1812, to re- form the College of New Jersey and to withstand the modern tend- ency towards secularization. He had been launched auspiciously on his lifework, as Baccalaureate speaker of the class of 1783, with the awe-inspiring privilege of praising General Washington, present in the audience, as the Continental Congress was meeting in Nassau Hall.3 Green was a good man and a revered minister but he tried to hold the college to the customs of the great days of John Wither- spoon and failed to meet the challenge of his own decade. -

Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2017 i Abstract For over two hundred years, the college experience in the United States was defined by the traditions of historic eastern college, such as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. This model of the college experience came to be seen as elite, private, and eastern. Representations of college life in popular novels reflected this idea and served to subtly reinforce the position of these colleges as the torchbearers for American higher education. However, as public higher education proliferated in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, the dominance of such a narrative began to be challenged. With the passage of the Morrill Land–Grant College Act in 1862, the college experience was now open to reinterpretation because of the markedly different missions of state colleges as well as the new types of students who attended them. -

FOREWORD As this beautiful booklet by famed Princeton historian William K. Selden illustrates, John Maclean House has been the home of 10 Princeton presidents, seven deans of the faculty, and countless numbers of Princeton alumni who have learned, since 1968, to call Maclean House their “home away from home” when they return to the Princeton University campus. Treasured for its historic, timeless interior and beautiful gardens, Maclean House occupies an important place in Princeton’s history. It has weathered occupation by both British and American troops during the Revolution, and has entertained multitudes of students, faculty members, alumni, dignitaries, and even U. S. presidents, over the 1 years. From its perch on the front lawn of the campus it has been on hand to witness the graduation of generations of Princetonians, both from the undergraduate classes and the Graduate School. Today, Maclean House functions as the home of the Alumni Association of Princeton University, first established by President John Maclean in 1826 to “promote the interests of the College and the friendly intercourse of its graduates.” As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the construction of Maclean House, I would like to thank Bill for capturing its essence in his words and pictures. -
