Jeff Evans Movie and Music Critic The original story of Santa Claus we all grew up with did not mention his brother Fred nor hint that St. Nick even had any siblings. Why? The movie that would someday revolve around the misfit family member would result in an on-screen disaster. This year’s holiday season kicked off with an overly complicated and downright disappointing attempt at extending the Claus family. Fred (Vince Vaughn) was forced to live under the shadow of his younger brother, Nick (Paul Giamatti), causing him to resent his relation to Father Christmas. Of course, mother (Kathy Bates) always loved little Nicholas better and often scolded Fred for not being more like his saintly sibling. Later, we find Fred to be living his dreams in Chicago as a repo man, taking away from Photo courtesy of www.post-gazette.com little children what Santa Claus gave them the Vince Vaughn stars in the new Christmas movie, ‘Fred Clause,’ as Santa’s not-so-saintly brother, Fred. previous year. The Carroll News wishes you and your family a safe and happy Thanksgiving 17 The Carroll News Editorialwww.wjcu.org/cn November 15, 2007 Editorial UH opens dialogue Since 1994, the city of University Heights has hosted a round table discussion program called Series of Discoveries. These forums are offered in order to increase communication between the city and its residents. UH should be commended on trying to follow through with ways to communicate successfully with John Carroll University. Recently, the program’s focus centered on JCU and its relation- ship with the city. The two-hour meeting, held on Nov. 8, was effective in discussing current problems with students who are

UH renters. The meeting proved to be a valuable resource. We believe that the city should continue to facilitate these types of round table discussions as well as do its part of supplying residents with important information concerning meetings, housing guide- lines and renting concerns. Although the UH Web site is currently being updated, it has lacked imperative contact information, as well as agendas for City Council meetings. Officials of the municipality explain that this information is publicly offered, however residents of the community are unaware of how to obtain it. Also, by continuing to offer round table discussion opportuni- “ ties, the city presents more personal ways for students to ask ques- tions and educate themselves on the policies of the community. This not only benefits students, but it also proves to be benefi- cial to city officials because it helps to clarify a lot of potentially NOTABLE QUOTABLE misunderstood issues and motivations. An important piece of information such as the three-strike legislation is an example of an event that affects both student renters and members of the commu- nity. When lines of communication do not remain open between these two parties, information can become misunderstood. ““It is a sad day for Broadway, but we must re- Editorial main committed to achieving a fair contract.” Student activity fee Originally, the Student Activity Fee was passed through a -Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the League of American The- student referendum–which meant that the students had to vote atres and Producers, in response to the stagehand strike in NYC. for it.
