The ministry and concerned authorities dealt with the crowd without any incident, but I do not think the issue is over for those poor people who are not demanding the impossible. They only want their right as agreed according to the con- tracts. If they receive their money, they won’t strike. Luckily, the issue ended peacefully and hopefully by now, they have been paid. The strike is nothing new. We regularly see workers rally- ing to demand what is rightfully theirs and what is being wrongly and unjustly held: their salaries. These salaries are in accordance with the contracts they agreed upon before coming to Kuwait. What angers me is the recurrence of such gatherings by poor workers who have no other option, no other recourse and no one to help them. The owners of companies who deny the salaries of their workers must be punished.

  • The Story of a Community
LIVINGSTON The Story of a Community ! Written by Workers of the WPA Writers' Program of the Works Projects Administration in the State of New Jersey ! Revised by the Livingston Bicentennial Historical Committee " American Guide Series ! Sponsored by the Township of Livingston 1939 & 2013 4th Revised Edition ! Acknowledgements ! This book is essentially a cooperative product of the people of Livingston Township, the former 1939 New Jersey Writers' Project and the Livingston Bicentennial Historical Committee in 2013. Every person approached by staff and committee members was glad to relate what he/she remembered, to show the documents and mementoes he/she owned, to suggest others who might supply information. It is obviously impossible to list all those who assisted in producing this book. The first edition was completed with the help of the members of the 125th Anniversary Committee: Freeman Harrison, chairman, who was unfailingly generous with his time and advice during the course of the work; Mrs. Lillias Cook; Miss Martha E. Devey, then township librarian; Leon O. Fisher, then superintendent of schools; Edward Gaulkin, then township recorder; the Reverend N. Lester Lawrence, then pastor, Livingston Baptist Church; and George B. Schulte. The first edition of the book was written by Richard A. Shafter from research material gathered by Miss Gertrude Tubby, Mrs. Katherine D. Hill and Fred Holden of the Essex County Unit of the Writers' Project. The first edition manuscript was edited for publication by Benjamin Goldenberg, supervising editor. The photographs were taken by Nathaniel Rubel, and the first edition was designed by Samuel Epstein, then Assistant State Supervisor.

Local Spotlight By Muna Al-Fuzai [email protected] acism often comes in the form of treating some individuals differently - socially and legally - and Rmaking distinctions between people on the basis of color or ethnic affiliation. This is the definition that is universally recognized. I think racism is like a disease in some people who have a virus of mental illusions or false ideas of superiority and inferiority among human beings, which justifies differing forms of treatment. I know that there are many studies and researches published on the Internet about racism and its history, and racism in Arab and Western societies with models, but I would like to focus on racism in the Arab Gulf societies and the duplicity in dealing with the concept of racism, whether by citizens or expatriates. It is necessary to define a specific concept and why some people think racism is prevalent in Kuwait, for example, but cannot talk about racism when they go to another country or even return to their native countries. I believe in Kuwait there is less racism than many coun- People in Kuwait enjoy walking along the beautiful corniche in Salmiya now that temperatures are dropping.

Regardless of the social and familial effects of this phenomenon, some men still prac- tice it and some women agree with it. But it remains con- troversial, and many women and men do not support the idea, although its debate is provocative for women and exciting for men! Polygamy raises the question: Can a married man who remarries be truly equitable and just to all his wives? Is he ever thinking of their welfare or only aiming to satisfy his desires? This article seeks to shed light over this case based on two incidents. Newspapers recently published a report A popular mural in Souq Al-Mubarakiya in Kuwait City. — Photo by Jaber Abdukhaleq / KUNA from Saudi Arabia that police arrested a woman who poured boiling oil on her husband after he married anoth- er woman. • Always Sometimes Monsters 03
Chris Lewis Carter I’M ABOUT TO close shop when a kid walks in, no older than eight or nine, lugging a cardboard box with Do Not Open Ever scrawled on the side. He pushes it onto the counter and stares at me with expectation. “Do you buy video games?” I gesture to the hundreds of plastic cases lining the shelves. “Let’s see, this is a used game store. What do you think?” “Okay,” he says, clearly not catching the sarcasm. “These are for sale.” I pry open the flaps, unleashing a stench like the inside of a damp basement. “Ugh, fantastic.” I fan the air until it’s semi-breathable. “Where did you find this stuff?” “My mom found it,” he says, rocking back and forth on his heels. “Inside our new house.” I remove a stack of software from the box. “You live in a sewer or something?” “No. Baker Street.” He picks up a strategy guide, flips through a few pages, then puts it back on the rack. “I’m not allowed to play video games. Mom says they’re a bad influence.” games. Mom says they’re a bad influence.” Those words never fail to get me started. “Well, your mom needs to join the twenty-first century. Games are entertainment, not serial- killer training manuals. Besides, they’re no more violent than a typical news broadcast. Statistically speaking--” But the kid isn’t listening anymore. He’s busy watching the demo kiosk replay my last lap of Rocket Racers. So much for educating the next generation.
