Barriers Steep canal bridge at Red Bull. Toilets None Contact 01270 686029 Route Details The name Lawton originates in the Lawton family with its family crest being the head of a bleeding wolf. Local legend talks about a man saving the Earl of Chester from being killed by a wolf. This act of bravery took place in about 1200, and to repay the deed, this man was given an area of land between Congleton and Sandbach. The one thousand acre estate became the Parish of Lauton, (later Church Lawton), and is recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086. The family crest can be found in the church. Lawton Hall, the country seat, of the Lawton family was built in the 17th century, but was almost destroyed by a fire in 1997. During the First World War the hall was used as a hospital, until this time it was still the Lawton family seat. Later it became Lawton Hall school which closed in 1986. Today it has been renovated into private dwellings. Iron smelting took place in the woods during the late 1600’s early 1700’s. Coal mining took place in nearby Kidsgrove and some of the mines extended into the Church Lawton / Red Bull area. The Trent and Mersey canal is linked to the Macclesfield canal at the Harding’s Wood Junction. -

The Congleton Accounts: Further Evidence of Elizabethan and Jacobean Drama in Cheshire

COMAN The Congleton accounts: further evidence of Elizabethan and Jacobean drama in Cheshire Last summer, while conducting my research into the influence on Elizabethan and Jacobean drama of schoolmasters and household tutors in the northwest of England - viz, Cheshire, Lancashire, Shropshire (Salop) and Westmorland (Cumbria) - I came across some evidence of dramatic activities in Congleton that I believe are as yet undocumented but are significant in several respects . Since it was a chance discovery right at the end of my stay, what is presented here is only a cursory examination of the records, not a thorough and complete study . In the Cheshire County Record Office, I had occasion to consult Robert Head's Congleton Past and Present, published in 1887 and republished presumably as a centenary tribute in 1987, and History of Congleton, edited by W .B. Stephens and published in 1970 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the town's royal charter.' Although my immediate concern was with the history of Congleton Grammar School and any possible dramatic activity connected with it, I was struck by references to the town's notorious week-long cockfights and bearbaits, and the even more intriguing assertions that the cockpit was usually in the school and that the schoolmaster was the controller and director of the pastime, reclaiming all runaway cocks as his own rightful perquisites . Head's book gave an entry from the borough's accounts : `1601. Payd John Wagge for dressyige the schoolhouse at the great cock fyghte . ..0.0.4d'. Because the aforementioned sports and pastimes were said to have drawn all the local gentry and nobility to the schoolhouse, the schoolmaster might also have undertaken some dramatic activities ; the town could have attracted touring companies at such times . -

Appendix 1 Cheshire East – Area Profile (spring 2015) Introduction Cheshire East is the third biggest unitary authority in the North West and the thirteenth largest in the country. It therefore has a wide breadth of social grades, age profiles and ranges of affluence. There is a clear link between these measures and the likelihood of a person gambling. It also needs to be acknowledged that there are clear differences between the type of person who gambles responsibly and the type who is identified as a problem gambler. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Emery Planning Partnership is instructed on behalf of Plant Developments Ltd to make representations to Cheshire East Council’s Pre-Submission Core Strategy, which is currently out for consultation in relation to a site known as The Orchard, Holmes Chapel Road, Brereton Heath. 1.2 We submit that Brereton Heath should be identified in the DDS as a sustainable village/village cluster where appropriate levels of development should be allowed. 1.3 This statement accompanies our overall representations (EPP ref: REPS2-8032-JC-bp). 2. BACKGROUND Site location and description 2.1 The site is located on the south western side of the A54, Holmes Chapel Road. Local Plan 2.2 The site is located within the open countryside. The majority of the site lies within the defined settlement of Brereton Heath. 2.3 Policies PS6 and H6 of the adopted Congleton Local Plan state that limited development will be permitted within the infill boundary line where it is appropriate to the local character in terms of use, intensity, scale and appearance and does not conflict with the other policies of the local plan. -
