‘CHRISTMAS IN CANAAN’ PRODUCTION BIOS MARGARET LOESCH (Executive Producer) – Margaret A. Loesch is the co-founder and former CEO of the The Hatchery LLC, a family entertainment company launched in 2003 with partner and former Co-CEO Bruce Stein and investor/partners Peter Guber and Paul Schaeffer. Loesch transitioned from The Hatchery to the recently formed Hasbro/Discovery Joint-Venture Network as its President and Chief Executive Officer. Loesch remains an integral part of the company, serving as an active board member. Concurrent with launching The Hatchery with Stein, in 2002-2003 Loesch raised the financing, produced, and in 2004 distributed, the fifth movie in the Benji franchise, “Benji Off the Leash,” with creator/director Joe Camp. From September 1998 until October of 2001, Loesch was the first President and Chief Executive Officer of Crown Media United States and its U. S. Hallmark Channel, having built and launched that channel after first restructuring and strengthening its predecessor, the U. S. cable channel Odyssey. Previously, she was President of the Jim Henson Television Group, Worldwide. During her tenure, she supervised the development and production of the award-winning “Bear in the Big Blue House” and served as its Executive Producer. While with Henson, Loesch played a key role in the 1998 acquisition of the Liberty Media-owned Odyssey Channel, which was acquired by the Jim Henson Company and Hallmark Entertainment. At the request of Odyssey’s consortium of partners, Loesch moved over to helm that cable channel, and is credited with building its programming strategy and ratings, forging a new management infrastructure, and establishing an enduring foundation for the Hallmark Channel, which she subsequently launched in 2001, replacing the Odyssey programming service. -

Low-Level Perceptual Features of Children's
LOW-LEVEL PERCEPTUAL FEATURES OF CHILDREN’S FILMS AND THEIR COGNITIVE IMPLICATIONS A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Kaitlin L. Brunick August 2014 © 2014 Kaitlin L. Brunick LOW-LEVEL PERCEPTUAL FEATURES OF CHILDREN’S FILMS AND THEIR COGNITIVE IMPLICATIONS Kaitlin L. Brunick, Ph.D. Cornell University 2014 Discussions of children’s media have previously focused on curriculum, content, or subjective formal features like pacing and style. The current work examines a series of low- level, objectively-quantifiable, and psychologically-relevant formal features in a sample of children’s films and a matched sample of adult-geared Hollywood films from the same period. This dissertation will examine average shot duration (ASD), shot structure (specifically, adherence of shot patterns to 1/ f ), visual activity (a combined metric of on- screen motion and movement), luminance, and two parameters of color (saturation and hue). These metrics are objectively quantified computationally and analyzed across films. Patterns in children’s formal film features are predicted reliably by two variables: the intended age of the film’s audience and the release year. More recent children’s films have shorter ASDs, less visual activity, and greater luminance than older children’s films. Luminance also reliably predicts character motivation (protagonist or antagonist) within films. Films for older children are reliably darker than films for younger children. When comparing the Hollywood sample to the children’s sample, children’s films are reliably more saturated and have higher ASDs than their Hollywood counterparts; however, these effects are largely driven by expected differences between animated and live action films rather than the intended audience of the film. -

Animation Cel Preservation and Storage for the Nelvana Animation Collection
UNBOXING NELVANA: ANIMATION CEL PRESERVATION AND STORAGE FOR THE NELVANA ANIMATION COLLECTION By Heather Tinker BA Communication and Film Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University, 2013 A practical report presented to Ryerson University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Program of Film and Photography Preservation and Collections Management Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 2016 © Heather Tinker 2016 Unboxing Nelvana: Animation Cel Preservation and Storage for the Nelvana Animation Collection Heather Tinker Master of Arts, 2016 Film and Photographic Preservation and Collections Management Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario in coordination with Media Commons, University of Toronto Libraries, Toronto, Ontario Abstract With no concrete preservation practices in place, the conservation and preservation of animation cels is a challenge for the stewards of animation-related collections. Characterized as mixed media artefacts, animation cels fall somewhere between illustrative art and motion picture film, which partially accounts for the lack of defined guidelines. Studies researching the conservation of animation cels, such as the one conducted by the Getty Conservation Institute in collaboration with the Disney Animation Research Library are so recent that, to date, no conclusive findings have been established. This practical report focuses on the organization, conservation, and storage of the Nelvana Animation Collection housed at Media Commons, University of Toronto Libraries. 1 Introduction
Notes 1 Introduction 1. It may be noted that, while the child is a relatively recent construction, the phase of life we think of as adolescence is even more recent. ‘It is as if,’ writes Ariès, ‘to every period in history, there corresponded a privileged age and a particular division of human life: “youth” is the privileged age of the seventeenth century, childhood of the nineteenth, adolescence of the twen- tieth’ (29). Marcel Danesi prefers to distinguish adolescence (a psychosocial and biological category) from teenagerhood (a socially constructed category having its origins in 1950s consumerism and the media) (3–6). 2. This is what Derrida would refer to as the ‘free play’ between Romanticism and Calvinism. In a key essay, ‘Structure, Sign and Play’, Derrida argues that the whole of Western thought is structured on the principle of a centre whose function ‘was not only to orient, balance, and organize the structure … but above all to make sure that the organizing principle of the structure would limit what we might call the play of the structure’ (278). In giving rise to binary oppositions, this centre operates to deny, repress or marginalise other meanings, readings and possibilities. For example, Romantic views of the child in the nineteenth-century were privileged while Calvinist views of the child were repressed, marginalised. In deconstruction, Derrida seeks to reverse or decentre these oppositions to show how the term that is central may just as easily be marginal, and to demonstrate how the hierarchy is highly unstable, even arbitrary. However, rather than simply adopting this other term as the new centre Derrida urges us to surrender to the free play of opposites, so that we may see all possibilities. -

Gemma International Joins As Care Bears™ Licensee to Celebrate 35
Gemma International Joins as Care Bears™ Licensee to Celebrate 35 Years and Beyond London 15th February 2017: Care Bears™ have begun celebrations of their 35th anniversary in 2017 following a successful 2016. Care Bears have created emotional connections with fans since 1982, and continue to appeal to new generations through modernized content that remains mum-trusted and teaches children to share their feelings. To coincide with the milestone 35th anniversary, the Care Bears’ licensing programme is expanding with a major new partner joining the celebrations. Gemma International, best in class for licensed greetings, will be creating greeting cards, balloons and party ware. The new Care Bears collection gives consumers ways to celebrate and share their love of the brand around the 35th anniversary. The announcement brings Care Bears full circle, as it was originally designed for greetings cards, and this has led to the pop culture phenomenon enduring 35 years. Working with CPLG, Gemma International launched their first greeting cards at Spring Fair last week. “I personally first came across Care Bears in 1982 when I was still involved in the toy trade and I remember how well received they were back then, and 35 years later, the brand continue to resonate with original fans and a whole new generation,” said Tim Rudd-Clarke, Licensing Director for Gemma International. “Our team is very excited to be working with CPLG on Care Bears to create a fantastic range of products from cards to gift packaging and party ware, launching in 2017.” Roubina
