But the board’s functions — which include collecting and doling out property taxes and county funds — might. “The buck literally starts and stops with the board,” said Chairman Mike Lehman, describing the currently all- Democrat institution. “We are the frontline for the county.” Lehman is among four Democrats and two Republicans hoping to fill the two soon-to-be vacant seats on the board. The first hurdle to clear is the primary election on Tuesday. In addition to Lehman’s seat, the supervisor slot held by Sally Stutsman is also up for grabs. Both are seeking re- election to their $43,500 a year positions — a figure Lehman said would probably increase to $45,000 on July 1. Many constituents are unfa- miliar with the role of the supervisors, he said, an igno- rance he deemed “unfortu- nate.” It’s a problem that has been partially mitigated by televising weekly meetings, he said. Supervisor Rod Sullivan, whose term lasts until the end of 2008, said one of the big items the supervisors have been working on is a human- rights ordinance to protect individuals not covered by the state’s civil-rights code. This includes protection for gay and lesbian individuals — the lack of which Sullivan called “a glaring omission.” However, the board’s work isn’t all policy. The supervisors also engage in more mundane activities, such as overseeing county agencies, appointing un-elected officials, and approving their compensation. “A lot of our work is just being the boss for those folks,” said Sullivan, who summa- rized his job in one sentence as the “direction and managing of county government.” He also said a lot of the supervisors’ work involves handling zoning and road issues brought up by con- stituents, as well as reading over legal documents.
