    Hearts in Atlantis Author Stephen King is well known for his works of chills and terror, of horror in tranquil New England spaces and unexplainable rages from machinery and madmen. There is another consistent subtheme in his writing: how children and adolescents discover their world, often the grim side of it. This side of his work is probably best remembered through the film Stand By Me, which was based on a King story. Now another version of King’s macabre outside world filtered through the understanding of a boy comes to the screen with Hearts in Atlantis. Though it sports contemporary bookends, Hearts in Atlantis (based on a set of King’s stories) is essentially one long flashback to a placid summer of 1960, in a small Connecticut town and the limited world of 11-year-old Bobby Garfield (Anton Yelchin). Living penuriously with his widowed, self-centered mother Liz (Hope Davis in a thankless role), Bobby’s narrow life (“nothing happens on this street,” he laments) revolves around his buddies Sully (Will Rothhaar) and Carol Gerber (the sweet Mika Boorem). Then an intriguing lodger, Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins), comes to live upstairs in the Garfield’s boarding house. Though mom is suspicious of the inscrutable newcomer, Brautigan--whose eyes are failing--hires Bobby to read the newspaper to him. He is a learned man but also one with quirks (reluctance to be touched, staring spells), and he harbors a secret, recruiting Bobby as an ally to watch out for the low men, “fellows who are ruthless and dangerous to know” who might be looking for him.

E-mail corrections or questions to [email protected] The table below lists the first trade edition identification criteria for each of Stephen King's books. The early Doubleday books all say "First Edition" explicitly on the copyright page (CP). There are other identifiers for these books as well. For books that contain strings of numbers to denote the printing, the important consideration is the presence of the numeral 1 in that string, regardless of the format of the numbers. Some possible variations of the printing numbers are: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 All three of these denote a first edition. The numeral 1 will be removed for a second printing. Black House is the exception. First edition copies state "First Edition" on the copyright page and the number sequence will be "2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3". Trim size is given because Book Club editions are often smaller than trade editions. Also, Book Club edition dust jackets (DJ) are occasionally found on first editions to replace lost or damaged jackets. Book Club edition dust jackets are easily identified because they do not have a price marked inside the front cover. Later printing trade edition dust jackets will often have a different price from what is found in the table.

    Introduction by Stephen King This foreword appears in the centenary edition of Lord of the Flies. I grew up in a small northern New England farming community where most of the roads were dirt, there were more cows than people, and the school housing grades one through eight was a single room heated by a woodstove. Kids who were bad didn’t get detention; they had to stay after school and either chop stovelengths or sprinkle lime in the privies. Of course, there was no town library, but in the deserted Methodist parsonage about a quarter of a mile from the house where my brother David and I grew up there was one room piled high with mouldering books, many of them swelled to the size of telephone directories. A good percentage of them were boys’ books of the sort our British cousins call ‘ripping yarns’. David and I were voracious readers, a habit we got from our mother, and we fell upon this trove like hungry men on a chicken dinner. There were dozens concerning the brilliant boy inventor Tom Swift (we used to joke that sooner or later we’d surely come across one titled 'Tom Swift and His Electric Grandmother'); there were almost as many about a heroic World War II RAF pilot named Dave Dawson (whose Spitfire was always ‘prop-clawing for altitude’). We fought the evil Scorpion with Don Winslow, detected with the Hardy Boys, roved with the Rover Boys. Eventually – around the time John Kennedy became President, I think – we came to feel something was missing.

Stephen King Stephen King, popularly known as “The King of Horror,” is one of the more prolific and successful writers of the twentieth century. Despite a reputation for writing only horror and gore, however, King has written works that do not qualify as either horror or supernatural but rather are thoughtful, intricate slices of human experience that often cause us to reflect on our own childhoods, not always with fond nostalgia. He encourages his readers to get in touch with their own memories of what being a child really means, and innocence has little to do with King's version of childhood. Believing that most adults have lost touch with their imaginations and a sense of the mythic, King constantly challenges his readers to expand their concepts of memory and experience. Life A writer who is remarkably open about his own history, King is frequently asked what seems to be an inevitable question: Where do you get your ideas? He has observed numerous times that this question seems to be asked more frequently of writers within the horror genre than of others, as though his story lines reflect an unstable mind.
