JUNE 1997 No. 279 Submitted by Ruth Guy Harbury’s fame has extended beyond our shores-as the Hereburgh Morris dancers were featured on C.B.C. Newsworld television outside the 2 Polling Station on Election day. Our photograph shows them earlier in the day dancing at Chesterton Windmill as dawn broke. Later on in the year sharp eyed fans of Dcuigerfwld may recognise shots of Harbury House in a forthcoming episode. We always pride our village on its community spirit and we are sure it will be in evidence on Carnival Day. However, in recent weeks there has been a spate of unpleasant thefts involving personal and public property. The most distressing episode involved the theft of the pump from the school’s swimming pool. It is reassuring to know that when misfortune strikes there are always those who are ready to rally to the cause. Congratulations to the Old New Inn for collecting money to replace the pump. All profits from their pig roast on Carnival Day will also be given to the school. Another fund raising event last month organised for S.H.A.K saw Harbury residents ‘hoofing’ at a Ceilidh. -rv?- •-n Harbury residents enjoying a Ceilidh Evening at the Village Hall The Editors would like to draw your attention to the advertisement for a Treasurer for the H&L News, see page 43. FROM THE CHURCHWARDENS i As many of you will be aware, Bishop Simon will be retiring from his position as Bishop of the Diocese of Coventry, during the autumn. Over the past seven months Bishop Simon has been undertaking a Missionary Journey round the Diocese visiting all deaneries. He will be in the Southam Deanery between Friday 20th and Tuesday 24th June and we are delighted he will be in Harbury on two occasions. Firstly to attend the Men’s Prayer Breakfast on the Saturday morning in the Tom Hauley Room at 7.30am and then on Sunday morning to officiate at a confirmation which will be included as part of the regular 10.30am morning service.

Land south of Gallows Hill and the Asps, Warwick 1.1.1 This land parcel is located outside of the West Midlands Green Belt and was therefore included in the Landscape Character Assessment for Land South of Warwick (2009) – (LCASW). 1.1.2 In the WDC SHLAA (2012) the site is identified as potentially suitable for development as W10 (Land south of Gallows Hill), W26 (Gallows Hill / Europa Way), and W27 (The Asps, Europa Way and Banbury Road). Together these areas total nearly 131 Ha. A former landfill site at Turnbull Gardens (see below) is excluded from the study area – but largely enclosed by it. (LCASW) Study Findings - 2009: Study Area This study area is approximately 130 hectares in area and is defined by Heathcote Description Lane / Gallows Hill to the north, the A452 (Europa Way) to the east, and the A425 Banbury Road to the south and west. The study area comprises agricultural land that is predominantly pastoral in character in the south and large-scale arable in the north. The Tach Brook valley divides the area and flows under the Banbury Road and into Castle Park on the western boundary. Along the northern side of the Tach Brook near Banbury Road is a block of mixed deciduous woodland, whilst on the southern side is a former landfill site (Turnbulls Gardens) occupying approximately 5 Ha.

    ST Classification: OFFICIAL COMMERCIAL Creating bathing rivers Business case 01 Severn Trent 29 January 2021 ST Classification: OFFICIAL COMMERCIAL Executive summary Clean, healthy rivers have the potential to support ecosystems, biodiversity, communities, health and wellbeing, and local as well as national economies. Currently, this potential is largely untapped, the UK has no bathing quality rivers and lags behind other European countries in unlocking the wider benefits of its rivers. The current approach to improving river quality is not working. The sector has invested £25 bn in wastewater quality since privatization. While we have made significant improvements in water quality from our river discharges, only 14% of rivers meet good ecological status. As one of many contributors to river water quality it is clear it remains a huge challenge to meet the ambition in the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, of 75% of rivers being close to their natural state. At the current cost and pace the ambition appears both unaffordable and unachievable. Defra and the Environment Agency are grasping this challenge as we work together to reform the way the environmental programme is defined. We see an opportunity to create a blueprint for how we can initiate a step-change from delivering environmental outputs for our rivers. Where previously we would tackle sector specific legislative drivers through isolated programmes of work, we want to move to delivering tangible and catchment based environmental outcomes. We are proposing to drive an outcome based step change for two sections of river by considering the current and future risks that could prevent it from returning to its natural state and addressing them in a way that provides tangible benefits and proactively responds to the increasing expectations of our customers and communities.

A map dated 1903 shows that the terraced houses in Manor Road and Farm Road (or Farm Lane as it was then called) had been built, along with two pairs of semi-detached houses in Vicarage Road. A number of houses along the South side of Cubbington Road, either side of the school, pre-dated this, but most of these are long since demolished. By the early 1920s, Vicarage Road was complete and more terraced houses had been built in Lime Avenue between Cubbington Road and the Smithy Club, presumably the present Lillington (Working Men’s) Club, opposite the end of Manor Road.
