McAlpine, H. Scott Makepeace, Dwayne L. Sabine, Paul M. Brunelle, Jim Bell, and Gail Taylor Over the past two decades there has been a surge of interest in the Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) of Maritime Canada and adjacent regions, with much new information accrued (Brunelle, 1997; Brunelle 1999; Brunelle 2010). Much of this increased interest in the region can be attributed to the efforts of a single investigator and his collaborators in the Atlantic Dragonfly Inventory Project (ADIP; see Appendix 2 in Brunelle 2010) and the Maine Damselfly and Dragonfly Survey. In spite of the extensive database of records for the Odonata of the region that now exists (35,000 records for the Maritimes, a further 30,000 for Maine), new discoveries continue to be made (Catling 2002; Sabine et al. 2004; Cook and Bridgehouse 2005; Klymko 2007; Catling et al. 2009), testament to continuing survey effort and the natural and anthropogenic changes in regional biodiversity always in process. Here we document expansion in the geographic range of two Atlantic Coastal Plain Odonata; Enallagma pictum Morse (Scarlet Bluet) (Odonata: Coenagrionidae), shown to be resident in New Brunswick and new for Canada, and Celithemis martha Williamson (Martha’s Pennant) (Odonata: Libellulidae), a species known previously from a single occurrence (Klymko 2007); and, comment on the significance of these records in the light of climate warming now in process. -

O'Brienl ABSTRACT Papers dealing with distribution, faunal extensions, and identification of Michigan insects and other terrestrial arthropods are listed by order, and cover the period of 1878 through 1982. The following bibliography lists the publications dealing with the distribution or identification of insects and other terrestrial arthropods occurring in the State of Michigan. Papers dealing only with biological, behavioral, or economic aspects are not included. The entries are grouped by orders, which are arranged alphabetically, rather than phylogenetic ally , to facilitate information retrieval. The intent of this paper is to provide a ready reference to works on the Michigan fauna, although some of the papers cited will be useful for other states in the Great Lakes region. -

To protect species from the impacts of land-use change it is important to understand the population dynamics and habitat associations across these scales. Here we present an investigation into the survival and habitat preferences of Leucorrhinia dubia at the local scale at Fenn’s and Whixall Moss, Shropshire, UK. We used mark-release-recapture methods to investigate survival and used sightings of individual dragonflies along with habitat data to investigate habitat preference. We found that survival between capture- visits was very low and that L. -

New York Natural Heritage Program ii Executive summary Vulnerability assessments are rapidly becoming an essential tool in climate change adaptation planning. As states revise their Wildlife Action Plans, the need to integrate climate change considerations drives the adoption of vulnerability assessments as critical components. To help meet this need for New York, we calculated the relative vulnerability of 119 of New York’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) using NatureServe’s Climate Change Vulnerability Index (CCVI). White faced darter © Barry Henwood White faced darter Leucorrhinia dubia Vander Linden Climate Change Sensitivity: HIGH Ability to Manage: MEDIUM Non climatic threats: MEDIUM Vulnerability: HIGH Summary The white faced darter has been lost from many sites in the south and midlands. Across its range, the loss and degradation of lowland peat bogs has been the main cause of its decline, but the loss from its southern sites suggests that the warming climate may be having an impact. The species has been well studied, and successfully reintroduced to sites where habitats have been restored. The restoration of former sites or the creation of new sites in parts of the country that will remain climatically suitable for the species will offer the best approach to building the resilience of the species within England. Climate Change Adaptation Manual Evidence to support nature conservation in a changing climate 467 Description The white-faced darter is a small dragonfly with a characteristic white face that gives it its name. The male is mainly black with scarlet and orange markings. Females are also predominantly black but have pale yellow markings. Its dark colouration means that it is able to warm up quickly in the sun, and therefore is well adapted to cool conditions. Ecology and Distribution The white faced darter is a rare dragonfly found mainly in Scotland, but also in the north of England, it has now been lost from all of its southern sites (Pam Taylor pers. comm.). It is a species of lowland peatbogs, and prefers relatively deep, low nutrient, acidic pools with marginal rafts of sphagnum in which to breed. -
