Top- decile performers systematically target each dimension of the Quadruple Aim, registering incremental yet cumulative gains (and savings) in safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency and equity in patient-and-family-centered care. These ambitious objectives require a multidisciplinary approach, particularly when serving infants, children, adolescents and emerging adults, and their families. Certified Child Life Specialists, as psychosocial healthcare professionals with focused training in child development, family systems, and evidence-based supportive interventions, are indispensable members of high-caliber healthcare teams. In collaboration with medical and allied health professionals, Certified Child Life Specialists bring a multifocal lens, individualized to the needs of pediatric patients and their families, grounded in developmental theory, attuned to the influence of past and present trauma, and aimed at building resilient family systems. Capitalizing on the power of therapeutic relationships and the expansive benefits of play-based interventions, Certified Child Life Specialists help children, youth, and families lay the foundation for lifelong health and wellness. In these ways, child life professionals significantly reduce the financial, developmental, and psychological costs associated with the discomfort and distress that persist far beyond each episode of care. By doing so, Certified Child Life Specialists ensure a cost-effective experience for patients and families that cultivates well-informed, actively engaged, loyal consumers of healthcare services throughout the lifespan. I met with Dr. Triebenbacher prior to the class beginning and helped create syllabus outlining the subject matter that the class would cover. There was an existing syllabus that we used as a guideline, but I introduced a few additional topics that I felt were important for introduction to child life students to learn. These topics included child life in alternative settings and covering in detail the roles that a child life specialist plays (including facing a child’s death and supporting the family through that situation). Both of those subjects were important for child life students to learn early on so that they would be aware of what their major and career goal actually entails. I have noticed in the past that students have changed majors after they learned this information later on in their academic career and I wanted to try to decrease this late change of major. I also suggested an assigned tour schedule. During my introduction to child life class, tours were offered, but not scheduled based on the students’ individual schedules. I wanted to offer every student the opportunity to learn about child life in alternative settings so I was placed in charge of putting together the schedule.

    ABSTRACT A Case for Child Life Programming: Parent and Sibling Perceptions Sarah Pitman Director: Joyce Nuner, Ph.D. Child Life Programs in hospital settings work with patients and their families to lower stress and educate families about their healthcare experience; however, Child Life Programs are not available in many medical settings. This project examines the impact of Child Life Programming from a sibling and parent perspective through a case project method. In-depth, semi-structured interviews with sibling and parent dyads about their hospital experiences were conducted with two families. Family Resilience and Stress Theory and the concept of disenfranchised grief were the theoretical framework and lens through which this project was conducted.     MCGEE, BETH L., M.S. An Inventory of Biophilic Design Attributes within Child Life Play Spaces. (2012) Directed by Dr. Anna Marshall-Baker. 198 pp. A review of the literature in architecture and interior design revealed health benefits from exposure to natural conditions. This was not particularly surprising given work related to biophilic theory, which posits an innate human affiliation to nature. The positive effects of interaction with our environment were also found in literature related to child development which revealed the importance of nature and play for enriching children’s development. This project intended to quantify the variety of biophilic design attributes present within existing play spaces that are used to support children’s health and well-being in healthcare settings within Child Life, a program that aims to help children and their families cope with the healthcare experience. The project used photography to document 24 inpatient play spaces in North Carolina health care facilities that employ Child Life. Features of the spaces identified in the photographs were then recorded using a Biophilic Interior Design Matrix, which was developed to inventory the range of biophilia design elements and their subset attributes (Kellert, 2008) to provide a quantitative score. It was developed and pre-tested in order to use the instrument to quantify the play room attributes and used inter-rater reliability testing to further define the instrument’s accuracy and dependability. The results from the matrices was an average total biophilic attribute score of 21.5 out of 52 total points or a 41% average inclusion with a statistical range of 25 points.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS The Henry Predolin School of Nursing, Business, and Health Sciences at Edgewood College is the only college in Wisconsin that offers students the opportunity to earn a master’s degree in Child Life. Students who graduate from the Child Life program go on to become child life professionals that serve children and families not only in Wisconsin, but throughout the United States, and in other countries around the world.     POLICY STATEMENT Organizational Principles to Guide and Child Life Services Define the Child Health Care System and/or Improve the Health of All Children Child Life Council Committee on Hospital Care ABSTRACT Child life programs have become standard in most large pediatric centers and even on some smaller pediatric inpatient units to address the psychosocial concerns that accompany hospitalization and other health care experiences. The child life spe- cialist focuses on the strengths and sense of well-being of children while promoting their optimal development and minimizing the adverse effects of children’s expe- riences in health care or other potentially stressful settings. Using play and psy- chological preparation as primary tools, child life interventions facilitate coping and adjustment at times and under circumstances that might prove overwhelming otherwise. Play and age-appropriate communication may be used to (1) promote optimal development, (2) present information, (3) plan and rehearse useful coping strategies for medical events or procedures, (4) work through feelings about past or impending experiences, and (5) establish therapeutic relationships with chil- dren and parents to support family involvement in each child’s care, with conti- nuity across the care continuum. The benefits of this collaborative work with the family and health care team are not limited to the health care setting; it may also optimize reintegration into schools and the community. CHILD LIFE PROGRAMS Most hospitals specializing in pediatric care have child life programs,1 and the number of these programs has doubled since 1965.
