Research has repeatedly shown that referred leads close faster, buy more, and stay longer — all with significantly less eort and at a much lower CPA than non-referred prospects. A University of Pennsylvania study¹ found that referred customers are more loyal and profitable — by a 16% margin — than their non-referred counterparts. When we make a big purchase, we seek out reviews or ping our networks for recommendations. When we see the same people talk about a purchase they made? Nielsen’s survey for Ambassador suggests two-thirds of us are at least a little more likely to make the same purchase. All of this has never been more true than in the age of the internet — a chaotic, noisy place where we’re constantly bombarded with blatant marketing messages, thinly-veiled “native advertising,” and unapologetic branded soapboxing. In this environment, a referral from a trusted source is a welcome respite from the subjectivity of typical brand communications. Amazon's Antitrust Paradox
LINA M. KHAN Amazon’s Antitrust Paradox abstract. Amazon is the titan of twenty-first century commerce. In addition to being a re- tailer, it is now a marketing platform, a delivery and logistics network, a payment service, a credit lender, an auction house, a major book publisher, a producer of television and films, a fashion designer, a hardware manufacturer, and a leading host of cloud server space. Although Amazon has clocked staggering growth, it generates meager profits, choosing to price below-cost and ex- pand widely instead. Through this strategy, the company has positioned itself at the center of e- commerce and now serves as essential infrastructure for a host of other businesses that depend upon it. Elements of the firm’s structure and conduct pose anticompetitive concerns—yet it has escaped antitrust scrutiny. This Note argues that the current framework in antitrust—specifically its pegging competi- tion to “consumer welfare,” defined as short-term price effects—is unequipped to capture the ar- chitecture of market power in the modern economy. We cannot cognize the potential harms to competition posed by Amazon’s dominance if we measure competition primarily through price and output. Specifically, current doctrine underappreciates the risk of predatory pricing and how integration across distinct business lines may prove anticompetitive. These concerns are height- ened in the context of online platforms for two reasons. First, the economics of platform markets create incentives for a company to pursue growth over profits, a strategy that investors have re- warded. Under these conditions, predatory pricing becomes highly rational—even as existing doctrine treats it as irrational and therefore implausible. -

Learned To Stop Worrying About Cultural Integration And Love The TV Trade Barrier Batia M. Zareh* ABSTRACT The E.U. Antitrust Case that opened on July 23, 2015 against Sky U.K. and six American studios—Disney, Fox, NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Sony and Warner Brothers—has its structural roots in the Television Without Frontiers Directive, which was vigorously debated as a last-minute standoff that threatened to derail the conclusion of the GATT Uruguay Round of trade negotiations and is still considered to be the cornerstone of the European Union’s audiovisual policy. This Article examines the unique history of a Cultural Exception with respect to audiovisual works as applied in trade negotiations to Hollywood film and television productions, and argues that, rather than violating E.U. regulations, the decades- * Writer / Producer, Dialectic Arts, LLC. Dyer A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education August 2013 Committee: Dr. Nancy Patterson, Advisor Dr. Savilla Banister Dr. Tracy Huziak-Clark Dr. Timothy Murnen i ABSTRACT Dr. Nancy Patterson, Advisor This qualitative study sought to explore the impacts of iPads on college students in a one- to-one deployment program. More specifically, the researcher wanted to determine how the iPad impacted students’ cognitive skills, motivation to learn, and organization. The research question asked: “What are college students’ perceptions of how iPads impact their cognitive skills, motivation, and organization?” iPads were distributed to eight students in a Midwestern state college to use on a 24/7 basis within a one-to-one deployment program. These students were all enrolled in the same Introduction to Social Studies Education course taught by Dr. Benson. Students were allowed to use their iPads in other classes and at home as well. Data collection employed a triangulation format as proposed by Miles and Huberman (1984). The three types of data collection during the 10-week study included: 10 classroom observations, and journal responses and matrix fill-ins students had to complete on a biweekly basis. The data was analyzed according to Erickson’s model of coding (1985) and organized in regards to the three main themes from the research question. The coded data made it clear that students saw a clear improvement in their organization and cognitive skills because of the iPad.
