he Golden Gate opens to welcome the bridge world Nov. 28–Dec. 8, when San Francisco hosts the Fall NABC. T There’s a seat for you at the table, whatever your bridge level, and with events starting morning, afternoon, evening and night, you can just relax and immerse yourself in the game. Looking for a partner or team? The Partnership Desk onsite is happy to oblige. The Soloway Knockout Teams debuts at the Fall 2019 NABC. Named in hon- or of late Hall of Famer Paul Soloway, the top-tier event begins with a two-day Swiss qualifying round to reduce the field to 32 squads, followed by five days of head-to-head knockout matches to crown a single winner. The contest awards platinum points, which are even available from match awards in the Swiss qualifier. The SF Intermediate/Newcomer scene is buzzing! Games most every day at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. provide a comfortable place to play against people who have similar experience. Preceding the morning and evening games, well- known bridge players present a short chalk talk designed to enhance players’ understanding of a useful concept or convention. Friendly, experienced bridge-playing volunteers are available before and after the games to look at a problem hand with you or talk over a tough auction. On the first Saturday and Sunday of the tournament, renowned teachers offer free, two-hour lessons followed by a game. Come, learn from the best!

Be Scent-sitive! Some people have an extreme sensitivity to fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances. Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine suerers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem. The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue serious consideration. If you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, please don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions. Daily Bulletin Friday, July 19, 2019 Page 19
