From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living. -

A scattering of evidence demonstrates how actors, whether individuals or organisations, in the music industry are making value propositions and providing operand resources to users of platforms (Poell, Nieborg, & Van Dijck 2019), which may result in resource integration and commercial success at a quick pace and on a global scale. Using secondary data in an archival research approach (Welch 2000), this paper examines TikTok, a rapidly growing platform where users integrate short (e.g., under 15 s) clips of commercial music into user generated video content in which users dance to, lip-sync with, accept social challenges, integrate hashtags and create memes based on musical content. She and her sister Lisa were writing songs and playing as a duo titled "The Daughters of Chester P" named after their father, Dr. Chester Paul Bonoff. She had already fallen in love with the guitar and studied with Frank Hamilton of the famous folk group, The Weavers. By 16, Karla and her sister Lisa auditioned for Elektra Records. An 11-song demo [recorded by Doors' engineer Bruce Botnick] was recorded but no deal came of this first effort. Karla's sister became a teacher of history and religion, but Karla's passion was always music. She became friends with other singer-songwriters and musicians [in the '60s] who were creating their own unique sound. She talks about lining up at the legendary Troubadour at noon on Mondays to get a slot in the famous Monday night Troubadour "hoot," which was a breaking ground for many artists who went on to great success. She says, "It was an amazing time. Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Elton John were around the Troubadour in those days." There were some other writer-singers who became friends of Karla's, and eventually, they decided to put a band together. They were Kenny Edwards, (who had started the Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt and Bobby Kimmel), Wendy Waldman, and Andrew Gold. -

This interview with LINDA RONSTADT was conducted by the Library of Congress on July 29, 2015. LOC: Of all your albums, what stands out most, to you, regarding “Heart Like a Wheel”? I’m the last person to know; it was such a long time ago and I never listen to my old records. I always liked that song [“Heart Like a Wheel”] rather than the more trendy or commercial stuff. I wanted to record it for years. But everyone said it was “not commercial, forget it, it’s too corny.” [But] it’s an art song, a true American art song. I really wanted to do it on piano and cello and I finally met the person who wanted to produce it- -Peter Asher. We debuted it at our Carnegie Hall concert. We were rehearsing the night before and my piano player, Andrew Gold, knew the song. And I said, “Let’s put that in the show tomorrow night.” We did and the audience LOVED it. That convinced Peter…. Serendipity. LOC: This was the first time you worked with Peter Asher for a full album, what did he bring to the process that was missing before? He’s such a solid craftsman. He really knows not to go into a muddle. He knew how to steer the artist and the musicians. He was really good at taking the best bits of the ideas and discovering how they go together to make a clear story. He’s organized, thoughtful. Clarity is what counts. If you can make it clear…. If you can make it clear then it can be funny or sad but if you try to make it funny or sad or whatever, then it’s not. -

20 questions Chasing Waterfalls GRAHAM GOULDMAN is in buoyant mood at the other end of a phone call from Liverpool, where he’s preparing to appear at the city’s Epstein Theatre. He’s halfway through the Heart Full Of Songs tour, performing stripped-back selections from a remarkable canon of work that reaches back over 50 years and includes many cornerstones of modern pop. ANDY MORTEN finds himself waiting at the bus stop without an umbrella Shindig!: The role of Jewish musicians and Graham as one half of 10cc in 1979 writers hasn’t been as noted as perhaps it could’ve been. Do you feel growing up Jewish had an impact on you musically or your approach to the industry? Graham Gouldman: Certainly growing up going to the synagogue had an impact on me. The music is often in a minor key and I always favour minor keys – they kind of have more soul. I don’t think of myself as Jewish, although I’m very proud to be Jewish. The music industry is generally very colourblind and religion-blind so I’ve not been aware of it really. Unless I’ve got some Yiddish word and someone in the band says, ‘What does that mean?’ ‘Ah! I’m going to use that!’ SD!: How tuned in where you to the mid- 60s music scene in Manchester? GG: I was totally tuned into it – it was what I lived for. Manchester was a university town – loads of bars and clubs and always loads of great bands coming through. -

Singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff has written for a variety of artists, but it’s her own voice that makes her music unique. Colleen Smith 2009 Karla Bonoff took the Swallow Hill stage by storm again on Saturday, packing the intimate Denver venue with aging Boomers. Bonoff’s set list led concertgoers down a ’70s and ’80s Memory Lane as she sang her songs, rendered huge hits by other singers like Linda Rondstadt and Aaron Neville, Bonnie Raitt and Wynonna Judd. But true Bonoff fans turn out to hear the songwriter’s singular voice, still as velvety as the black skirt she wore. Bonoff makes her home near Santa Barbara, Calif., which means she comes from sea level and humidity to our mile-high-dry air — no easy transition for the lungs or the vocal chords. “I’m out of breath,” Bonoff said early into her set, later thanking the audience for putting up with her “froggy throat.” The truth is, Bonoff continues to carry all her notes. With integrity and clarity and admirable modulation, she belts out her lyrics. And she hits artistic grace notes, whether on piano or guitar. Bonoff grew up in Los Angeles and wrote her first song by age 15. She came of musical age in Southern California’s singer- songwriter stew, performing at the Troubadour, also frequented by the likes of James Taylor and Jackson Browne — both of whom she toured with later. Bonoff has written passionately, if not prolifically, so her set on Saturday consisted of her four albums’ melodious and emotional old favorites: “Home,” “Someone To Lay Down Beside Me,” “Tell Me Why” and “All My Life.” “You’re so well behaved,” Bonoff told the audience at Swallow Hill, where people tend to take both making music and listening to music seriously. -

The Stonemen (MA) This interesting California folk-rock outfit was originally a duo of Linda Rondstadt and Bob Kimmel known as The Kimmel Brothers, but they soon 45: No More/Where Did Our Love Go (Big Topper 1107) 196? adopted the Stone Poneys moniker and recruited Ken Edwards. Both Ken and Bob were already respected songwriters and studio musicians. This significant single is by a Fall River, Massachusetts band. No More,a moody garage ballad, has resurfaced on New England Teen Scene, Vol. 3 Their first album was produced by Nick Venet (Mad River, Leaves, (LP) and the No No No compilation (CD). (MW/ELn) Euphoria) and is really good. The material is strong (Wild About My Lovin’, Train And The River, Sweet Summer Blue And Gold) and the music and vocals extremely consistent. All the songs were written by Edwards and Stone Moses (IA) Kimmel, except for Tom Campbell’s 2.10 Train and Orion, and Little Bit Of Rain by Fred Neil. It is worth noting that all the backing musicians and ALBUM: 1 STONE MOSES (Red Rock) 1974 R1 Venet also worked with Fred Neil on his two albums recorded in 1967. This is an obscure country-rock album from Iowa. (VJ) After two further albums the trio disbanded, although Stone Poneys And Friends was basically the original group in the studio with session players. When Different Drum became a hit, Linda went on the road with Bobby The Stone Poneys (CA) Kimmel (gtr), Shep Cooke (bs) and other sidemen. By that time, the group was defunct but Ronstadt needed the money and to support the single, Personnel: KEN EDWARDS gtr, vcls A they played a four-month tour as ‘Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys’.
