We need to complicate the idea of origins and `firsts’ because they highlight some dimensions of film culture and usage over others, and obscure the wider network of media technologies, cultural practices, and audiences which made cinema possible. In India, it is a matter of debate whether D.G. Phalke's Raja Harishchandra (1913), popularly referred to as the first Indian feature film, deserves that accolade. As Rosie Thomas has shown, earlier instances of the story film can be identified, includingAlibaba (Hiralal Sen, 1903), an Arabian Nights fantasy which would point to the presence of a different cultural universe from that provided by Phalke's Hindu mythological film. Such a revisionary history is critical to our research agenda. -

Woman Becomes Goddess in Bollywood: Justice, Violence, and the Feminine in Popular Hindi Film Abstract What happens “when a woman becomes Chandika?” This essay contributes to an on-going discussion of the theme of “avenging women” in popular Indian cinema, with particular focus on the transformation of a woman into a fierce Goddess who avenges oppression and re-establishes justice. Analysis of the story line and selected song sequences from the Hindi language film Anjaam (“Outcome,” 1994) in light of themes from the Hindu Sanskrit text, the Devi-Mahatmya (“Greatness of the Goddess,” 5thc. C.E.) shows how traditional religious images and values are adapted and transformed in a modern context. Eight of these essays were published (or republished) as chapters within my monograph Bombay Before Bollywood: Film City Fantasies, which aimed to outline the contours of an alternative history of twentieth-century Bombay cinema. The ninth, which complements these, was published in an annual reader. This project eschews the conventional focus on India’s more respectable genres, the so-called ‘socials’ and ‘mythologicals’, and foregrounds instead the ‘magic and fighting films’ – the fantasy and stunt genres – of the B- and C-circuits in the decades before and immediately after India’s independence. -
Realism and Fantasy in Hindi Cinema
Excerpt • Temple University Press Introduction M ir r o r a n d L a m p n 2013 India celebrated a hundred years of cinema. During its century this cinema, and in particular Hindi-language popular cinema, arguably the Imost important of several cinema industries in the Subcontinent, has been both mirror and lamp—reflecting “Indianness” back to Indians at home and abroad, but also shaping Indianness. Movie-going in India is a special sort of pleasure—for many affording rare access to privacy, a sometimes three-hour- long respite from noise and heat in an air-conditioned, carpeted interior, where one can be alone with oneself among others, in the dark. This pleasure neces- sarily induces a different relation to interior, psychic space, without having to submit to sleep, even absenting the enjoying ego from the enjoyment: this is as close to accessing (unconscious) desire as most ever come, and could even be considered a kind of wild psychoanalysis. For many Indians without the means, it affords opportunities to travel (“transport”?), if only on the wings of fan- tasy: to alternative realities, foreign locales, alien cultures, unfamiliar aesthet- ics of self and unaccustomed social arrangements, pleasurable disorientations of everyday life. The “dream machine” is also a space-time travel machine— “motion” pictures move us to different zones, to unaccustomed emotions. Sitting in darkened cinema theaters in India, the spectator might also be struck by how often Indianness itself is what is being screened—in both senses. Hindi cinema has been, to change metaphors, a “dream machine,” producing images of collective or national identity that, with every iteration, prove more transitional, contradictory, and elusive or enable us to screen truths about our- selves from ourselves. -

And what about A Post box, and what on earth is The Hollow Nickel Case? An Ammunition box – dunno. Couldn’t tell you. I’m not well-versed in Postal systems. And I don’t know what Bulk mail is or what is supposed to be special about A Catcher pouch. I don’t know what people mean by ‘Bags’. What’s the deal with The Arhuaca mochila, and what is the mystery about A Bin bag? Am I supposed to be familiar with A Carpet bag? How should I know? Cradleboard? Come again? Never heard of it. I have no idea. A Changing bag – never heard of it. I’ve never heard of Carriages. A Dogcart – what does that mean? A Ralli car? Doesn’t ring a bell. I have absolutely no idea. Now a day`s making a good movie is immensely important but promoting it and taking it to the reach of every individual is equally essential. Different producers have been using their conspicuous strategies to promote their movies at a large platform but still there is a big room for improvement. "Recently released Dangal film marketing strategy emphasized women empowerment as the film's storyline revolves around Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, Patiala House released in Patiala, ironically the film has nothing to do with the princely state, Promotion of pink film was done at Mitthibai college festival Umang 2016, Silence was the promotion strategy for My Name is Khan a much talked film, Salman khan promoted Hero movie but he was not in the film," This paper analyses widespread marketing strategies used in Hindi Film industry popularly called the Bollywood both nationally and internationally. Film marketing is rapidly developing into a promising industry although the idea is its initial stage in India. Films now are more than just an entertainment, but are a business. Marketing of a movie is not a new initiative it has its existence since films were introduced in India, but it is followed more rigorously in today's era of film affairs. -
