The Naismith Hall is located in Springfield, Massachusetts, and KU has more inductees in the Hall than any other university. Lynette Woodard joins the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame this month in Knoxville, last year having been inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. KU football video coordinator Lance Wright has been named the Big 12 Video Coordinator of the year by the Collegiate Sports Video Association. KU Junior Sheldon Battle, hammer, discus and shot put thrower, has been named the Mondo Midwest Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track Coaches Association. A 150-year old home in Lawrence has been identified as the place where the Rock Chalk Chant was born at gatherings of the KU Chemistry Club headed by Professor E.H.S. Bailey. The KU Athletics budget has increased about $13million since 2003. Q: Is a Moon Bar any relation to a Moon Pie? Former KU Track Coach Bob Timmons and his wife have donated the KU Cross-Country Course on their Rim Rock Farm to KU, a gift worth approximately $500,000. The KU Audio Reader program is the second oldest such program in the country, providing live and recorded reading by FM radio receivers to blind and visually impaired citizens of Kansas. Elizabeth Ahrens, Stephen Ferrell and Rachael Perry, all KU students from Topeka, received awards and scholarships in this year's KU Theatre Awards Ceremonies. Alumni honored were Broadway, film and TV actor Mandy Patinkin, New York, and Alex Graves, California, writer, director and producer of "The West Wing". "I am very glad to know of your interest in the University of Kansas, but as you know, we do not have any special scholarships of any kind for athletes here at the University." Thus opens the standard letter Phog Allen used in the 1930s and 40s to respond to inquiries from prospective basketball players. Gems such as Allen's letter underscore the vast changes in college athletics, basketball in particular, since the 1940s. They're what fascinated me in reading this biography penned by a sportswriter for The Kansas City Star At times I wished Kerkhoff would provide more commentary and analysis on Phog's life than he does, as Kerkhoff tends to leave Allen's comments and actions to interpret themselves. But Allen's colorful statements do provide many entertaining moments in the book. Of the AAU, which Allen regularly attacked for having too much control in amateur athletics, he snapped, "I like the AAU like a fellow likes garlic for dessert." Another time he claimed AAU stood for ''Asinine And Unfair." Even his own players were not spared. Of center B. H. Born, who helped lead Kansas to the championship game in 1953, Phog complained after one game, "He stood around like a Christmas tree, and out of season at that." Apparently, Allen was also willing to stretch the truth for a good yarn, especially to inspire his teams in pre-game and halftime talks.

    Basketball History Dr. James Naismith invented the game in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts at Springfield College. He was a Presbyterian minister (but never preached)… and a doctor (but never practiced medicine)… and an educator and physical education teacher… and a basketball coach. He was born in Almonte, Ontario of Scottish ancestry … so this great American (and now worldwide) sport was invented by a Canadian, with a Scottish accent! He was a thirty year-old assistant physical education director when he invented the game. He only played in two games! The first baskets were not peach baskets as the story often goes, but were vegetable baskets nailed to the railing of an elevated circular running track, which just happened to be about 9 or10 feet high. He eventually became head of the physical education department at Kansas, and designed the first golf course in Kansas. His favorite sport was fencing and he was very good at it. He invented basketball for fun, as a simple physical education activity… not something to be serious about! He said often, “Basketball is just a game to play. It doesn’t need a coach… you don’t coach basketball, you just play it.” Nevertheless, he became basketball coach at Kansas in 1900, and lost his first game 48-8 to Nebraska. He coached for eight years and his won-loss record was barely .500. But he started a great Kansas tradition. For years, the Kansas Jayhawks had one of the most winning programs in all of college basketball. Phog Allen (Kansas, record: 590-219), Adolph Rupp (Kentucky), and Dean Smith (North Carolina) were all Jayhawks.

Middle metrics are determined by the kind of sports. Meanwhile it can test whether our database is reasonable. Advanced metrics are related to special awards or honors. We study influence of time line horizon through the development of sports and the number of teams and calculate time-dependent weights. According to the calculations,we make adjustments to some metrics value.Based on our former work, we get the final coach rankings by combining AHP with TOPSIS.
