  • Digital Radio Technology and Applications
it DIGITAL RADIO TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS Proceedings of an International Workshop organized by the International Development Research Centre, Volunteers in Technical Assistance, and United Nations University, held in Nairobi, Kenya, 24-26 August 1992 Edited by Harun Baiya (VITA, Kenya) David Balson (IDRC, Canada) Gary Garriott (VITA, USA) 1 1 X 1594 F SN % , IleCl- -.01 INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH CENTRE Ottawa Cairo Dakar Johannesburg Montevideo Nairobi New Delhi 0 Singapore 141 V /IL s 0 /'A- 0 . Preface The International Workshop on Digital Radio Technology and Applications was a milestone event. For the first time, it brought together many of those using low-cost radio systems for development and humanitarian-based computer communications in Africa and Asia, in both terrestrial and satellite environments. Ten years ago the prospect of seeing all these people in one place to share their experiences was only a far-off dream. At that time no one really had a clue whether there would be interest, funding and expertise available to exploit these technologies for relief and development applications. VITA and IDRC are pleased to have been involved in various capacities in these efforts right from the beginning. As mentioned in VITA's welcome at the Workshop, we can all be proud to have participated in a pioneering effort to bring the benefits of modern information and communications technology to those that most need and deserve it. But now the Workshop is history. We hope that the next ten years will take these technologies beyond the realm of experimentation and demonstration into the mainstream of development strategies and programs.

High Frequency Single Sideband Communications Systems 921 HF email system Utilizing Wavemail / Wavenet software and Barrett 921 Pactor II modems. The 921 Wavemail software package is a complete e- mail system optimised for use over HF radio links using the 921 Pactor II modem. It operates as a standard e-mail system that has an extremely easy to use software interface. 921 Wavemail provides all the functions needed to create, send, read, forward, reply and manage messages. Files of any type (e.g. spreadsheets, graphics, text...) can easily be attached using a file- 921 dialogue or drag-and-drop function. Messages can be addressed to several recipients and delivery notifications can be requested. 921 Wavemail is not overloaded with complex functions that are more confusing than useful. 921Wavemail allows on-line person-to-person dialog (chatting) between two stations. 921 resumes the transfer at the point where the connection was lost in the event of a temporary link failure. This prevents repeating the same data transfer. 921 Wavemail allows Messages to be addressed to individual persons on a station. The users at a station can send and receive messages from their workstation on a LAN or directly on the PC connected to the 921 modem. The 921 system is GLPLUS / RLPLUS compatible 921 networks can use VHF/UHF links and Packet modems, Inmarsat and telephone lines to extend an HF network. 921 Wavemail handles up to seven different types of modems on one PC. For example a station can have a Barrett 921 HF modem, a Packet-Radio modem for a VHF/UHF link and an AT-Hayes compatible telephone modem, all on the same PC.
