To most automobile manufacturers, these systems would be more than enough. But in here, they’re just the beginning. The GX is the first V8 in its class to come standard with heated and ventilated front seats. And, because not all air is good air, the GX also includes a system that can detect smog and certain pollutants outside of the vehicle. If it determines the outside air to be contaminated, the system automatically recirculates the cleaner air inside the cabin. TWO SCREENS. The available dual-screen Rear-Seat Entertainment System in the GX enables two video sources to be viewed at the same time. The notable exception: the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System on the GX. On-road, the system automatically holds the front and rear stabilizer bars in place, helping to minimize body lean while cornering. And off-road, it reacts to uneven surfaces by automatically adjusting the bars, increasing wheel articulation. Add an intelligent six-speed automatic transmission to a more powerful, 301-horsepower,6 4.6-liter V8 engine and you don’t just turn heads, you silence critics. Because, in addition to reducing the amount of engine noise and vibration SPECS you’ll experience in the cabin, the addition of the sixth gear also improves fuel efficiency. PERFORMANCE SAFETY INNOVATION To provide a nearly unparalleled level of quietness, the frame of the GX is designed to absorb noise and vibration before it enters the cabin. And even then, unwanted sounds must pass through a gauntlet of floor-to-ceiling dampening and insulation measures. Additionally, to ensure your quiet ride is also an enjoyable one, an available Adaptive Variable Suspension enables you to customize the degree of road feel to one of three settings. SPECS Optional equipment shown. A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TAKE ON THE WORD. ‘INSURMOUNTABLE.’ AMENITIES PERFORMANCE SAFETY INNOVATION Conquering the most intimidating terrain is second nature in the GX. In addition to full-time 4WD and a TORSEN® limited-slip center differential,8 it features what can be thought of as the off-road equivalent of cruise control. With the press of SPECS a button, available Crawl Control9 carefully manages the throttle and brakes to help you maintain a slow, consistent speed up, down and over rugged terrain. SAFETY SAFETY PRE-COLLISION HEADLAMPS AIRBAGS THEY SAY NOBODY EVER PLANS TO BE IN AN ACCIDENT. ON THE CONTRARY. We’ve spent years preparing for an event we hope never takes place. Developing technology to help you see more and react faster to potentially avoid a collision. And if one is unavoidable, you can be assured that we’ve planned for that, too. The GX is equipped with 10 airbags10—more than any vehicle in its class. Optional equipment shown. See disclaimers on page 61. JUST A FEW OF THE WAYS WE’VE THOUGHT ABOUT THE UNTHINKABLE. When time is of the essence, distraction can be a danger. That’s where the available Pre-Collision System11 with Driver Attention Monitor12 comes in. A first in its class, it uses a front- mounted radar sensor that can help detect an object ahead and a camera attached to the steering column that can discern the position of your face. If you’re not facing forward when a potential collision is detected, it sounds a warning and, if necessary, lightly taps the brakes to get your attention.12 And, in some cases, when it deems a collision is imminent, it can even automatically apply the brakes to help reduce speed. LANE DEPARTURE ALERT Using a camera that monitors the lane markings, the available Lane Departure Alert15 is designed to detect if the GX is beginning to drift out of its lane. If so, it can warn you with a series of audible and visual alerts. See disclaimers on page 61. YOUR FOCUS: ONE THING THAT SHOULD NEVER GO OFF-ROAD. INTELLIGENT HIGH-BEAM HEADLAMPS The GX also offers available intelligent high-beam headlamps.16 They operate in high-beam mode until the system detects the headlamps from an oncoming vehicle or other vehicles traveling closely ahead, and then temporarily enters into low-beam mode until vehicles are no longer detected. When you’re rounding a turn in the dark, unidirectional headlamps that illuminate the area adjacent to the curve aren't nearly as effective as the advanced Adaptive Front Lighting System available on the GX. It can help illuminate the road by rotating the right headlamp up to 10 degrees and the left headlamp up to 15 degrees into a turn. Optional equipment shown. See disclaimers on page 61. Robertson, Ph.D., author of “Injury Epidemiology” and former Senior Scientist at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Vehicles shown on the list are predicted to have lower-than-average annual crash death rates. The vehicles are ranked by EPA gas mileage estimates. The actual gas mileage will vary depending on where and how you drive. Fast acceleration and speed reduces gas mileage. Factors reflected in the ratings include IIHS 45-mph crash test results (http://www.iihs.org/ratings/default.aspx), vehicle weight relative to size, and vehicle stability. Vehicles that performed poorly in the IIHS tests, or were not tested, are not on the list. Some vehicles that have not been crash tested may be added to the list when they are tested, depending on the test results. If a vehicle has already been crash-tested and is not on the list, it is not considered among the safest. Dr. Robertson advises users of the list: “Note that only one pickup truck made the list, and only a few SUVs, contrary to claims by manufacturers that such vehicles are safer. I do not recommend using a pickup or SUV unless there is a compelling need for one.
