ABSTRACT: Gold and silver deposits related to Jurassic Patagonian volcanism: review and perspectives for exploration. Potential for gold-silver mineralization related to Jurassic magmatism in Patagonia was only recognized 20 years ago. At the present the Au+Ag resour- ces exceed 700 t in three world class deposits (> 100 t Au Eq), several smaller ore deposits and many prospects in exploration stage. The deposits are hosted in silicic and mesosilicic volcanic and volcanic-sedimentary Jurassic rocks (occasionally older) related to arc or back-arc settings in Andean or extra-Andean environments. The ore geology, textures, mineralogy and geoche- mistry of these mineralizations indicate that they are epithermal deposits, and are mainly associated to the quartz + calcite + adularia + illite assemblage of the low and intermediate sulfidation types. Based on their metallic association, the deposits were divided into: a) Au-Ag and Ag>Au, b) polymetallic with Ag-Au or only Ag and, c) complex polymetallic mineralizations with Ag-Au. The deposits form tectonically controlled veins with only one example where strong lithological control dominates. The few hydrothermal minerals and hostrocks dates, suggest that the hydrothermal activity is several millions years younger than the peak magmatism. The sinter, carbonate-lacustrine deposits and silicic lithocaps related to steam-heated waters in the water table suggest regions or tectonic blocks with potential for epithermal systems at depth. The mineralizing fluids are dilute to low-inter- mediate salinity waters with temperatures between 160 to 330ºC. Extensional fracturing developed in the Jurassic volcanics and the influx of meteoric waters in the geothermal systems are considered the main controls in the ore genesis. The Deseado Massif geographic coordinates and statistical parameters for the paleomagnetic pole, validated by a reversal test, are: South America Lat. = 84.3° S, Long. = 191.3° E, A95 = 8.6°, K = 13.3, N = 23. This pole shows a complete coherence with Late Paleomagnetism Jurassic and Early to mid-Cretaceous poles of South America, obtained exclusively from igneous rocks, avoiding Apparent polar wander path any potential inclination shallowing. It is suggested that; a) southern Patagonia was an integral part of South America in the Late Jurassic; b) any reported vertical axis tectonic rotations must pre-date the Late Jurassic in this region; c) according to updated paleomagnetic data from igneous rocks, South America had very limited latitudinal drift between about 160 and 140 Ma; and, therefore, d) its apparent polar wander (APW) path, when compared with global apparent polar wander paths, does not support a large global shift or true polar wander (TPW) between 160 and 140 Ma.

Università degli Studi di Padova University of Tasmania DIPARTIMENTO DI GEOSCIENZE CODES - ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits ________________________________________________________________ SCUOLA DI DOTTORATO DI RICERCA IN: SCIENZE DELLA TERRA CICLO XXVI Jurassic magmatism in Patagonia, Mauritania and Mali: Examples of silicic and basaltic Large Igneous Provinces Direttore della Scuola: Ch.mo Prof. Massimiliano Zattin Supervisore: Ch.mo Prof. Andrea Marzoli Co-supervisore: Ch.mo Prof. Vadim Kamenetsky Dottorando: Lina Maria Serrano Duran ABSTRACT At the end of the Triassic and during Jurassic times, the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) with a dominant mafic composition, and the mainly felsic Patagonian Province (PA) were formed in the context of Pangea break-up. CAMP basaltic to basaltic-andesitic dykes and sills from Hank and Hodh, in Mauritania, and Kaarta, in Mali, were emplaced at ca. 197 Ma yielding a signature defined by low to high TiO2-values (0.39 - 2.29 wt.%), Nb-Ta troughs, Pb spikes and enriched Nd-Sr-Pb 143 144 87 86 207 204 compositions ( Nd/ Nd201Ma: 0.51224 - 0.51241, Sr/ Sr201Ma: 0.70572 - 0.70795, Pb/ Pb201Ma: 208 204 206 204 15.61 – 15.68 Pb/ Pb201Ma: 38.44 – 38.07 and Pb/ Pb201Ma: 18.11 – 18.48). Nb/U ratios (= 12 – 15), tracers of recycled material, combined with enriched isotopic signatures suggest the contribution of continental crust in the origin of these magmas. Differences in the ratios of La/Yb of the whole set suggest the existence of an enriched group in Kaarta (La/YbN>4.3) coupled to increasing ratios of Nb/Zr and Th/Y, probably reflecting lower degrees of partial melting in these rocks.

Until recently, plutonic rocks of this age were considered either rare or 33 absent from the Antarctic Peninsula batholith, which was thought to have been mainly constructed 34 during the Middle Jurassic and the mid-Cretaceous. New U-Pb zircon geochronology from the 35 Antarctic Peninsula and recently published U-Pb ages from elsewhere on the Peninsula and 36 Patagonia are used to demonstrate the more widespread nature of Early Jurassic plutonism.

Geolo´gicas, Univ. de Buenos Aires, Pabello´n II, Ciudad Universitaria, 1428 Buenos Aires, Argentina Received 1 February 2002; accepted 1 June 2002 Abstract Middle Jurassic volcanism is a major magmatic event in the evolution of Patagonia. In the southwestern corner of the North Patagonian Massif at Sierra de Mamil Choique, basic to intermediate, ca. 170 Ma dykes are widespread. In this article, new chemical data from the dykes are presented, analyzed, and compared with regional information about Jurassic volcanism. The dyke swarms are composed of an alkaline and a subalkaline series. Fractionating phases that controlled the magmatic evolution were plagioclase (andesine) þ clinopyroxene with clinoamphibole (for compositions of SiO2 . 60%) in the subalkaline series and clinoamphibole þ plagioclase (oligoclase) ^ magnetite in the alkaline series. The source of both series could be an enriched lithospheric mantle or lower crust. Although crustal contamination or enrichment by subduction-derived fluids cannot be demonstrated from the available data, a subduction-enrichment process of the magma source is suggested for the subalkaline rocks. Different volatile composition, water content and perhaps temperature at the melting site would control the higher Zr content of the alkaline series and would allow low melt fractions to leave their sources.

Efficient Chrono-Stratigraphic Database Structure in GIS Carlos Gabriel Asato, Servicio Geológico Minero Argentino Buenos Aires, Argentina. E-mail [email protected] Abstract In recent years the Instituto de Geología Regional y Recursos Minerales, has been developing the Regional Geology GIS Data Standards. One of the most important tasks was the development of the chrono-stratigraphic database definition and design. In order to allow the use and exploitation of digital geological maps, a simple database structure had been made. This case differs from traditional chrono- stratigraphic database designs where there are only direct relationships between geological units and their chrono-stratigraphic definition. The design concept involves a hierarchical data organization taken from the chrono-stratigraphic column where the relationships between classes and sub- classes were preserved. In more detail it is used a special code definition that was designed in order to have a direct correspondence with a specific chrono-stratigraphic division, and indirect relation to their own hierarchical position. There is also a complete chrono-stratigraphic definition, ordered in separate fields, and organized by chrono-stratigraphic level. The data structure formed by geological layer, table relationships, chrono-stratigraphic code and chrono- stratigraphic table design allow to the users indexing, classification, and direct searching and scalable design. Introducction GIS design involves a lot of different analysis techniques based in the analysis of data spatial structures, attribute tables and related database. Analysis could be made using GIS tools, only if data structures have an appropriate design. Database design could be understood as important GIS part when querying analysis will be performed.

The locality contains the first richly fossiliferous chert with a diverse and well-preserved plant assemblage reported from the Mesozoic which is demonstrably associated with hot spring activity. A compression flora and petrified forest contained in associated clastic and volcaniclastic environments provide an indication of regional plant diversity during this as yet poorly represented stratigraphic interval. Bétard, J.P. Peulvast, Jorge Rabassa, and Emilia Y. Aguilera Abstract The Deseado Massif is the southernmost part of a continent, outside of Antarctica, where Gondwana Landscapes may be observed and investigated. This chapter presents preliminary observations and field data about the Gondwana Land- scapes of this cratonic area of Southern Argentina, one of the most remote, isolated, and less populated places on Earth. Under extreme cold–arid climate conditions, the region presents very scarce vegetation cover, which further enables the geomorpho- logical observations. Remnants of planation surfaces of undisputable Late Mesozoic age, developed on Jurassic volcanic units and covered by Late Cretaceous and Pale- ogene sedimentary rocks, are exposed along tens of thousands square kilometers of this cratonic unit. In those remote times, the climate of this portion of Patagonia was very wet and warm, allowing the development of extensive chemical weathering.
