HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY BOONE LAKE ASSOCIATION! SERVING BOONE LAKE SINCE 1983 Boone Lake Association is celebrating 30 years of working to improve the water quality and safety of Boone Lake. The picture to the left is an iconic picture of the shape that Boone Lake was in during the early eighties. Boone Lake Association was formed in 1983 and with the support of its members, has made vast improvements in the condition of the lake. As everyone on the lake knows, it is a continuous fight to keep the litter and wood debris out of the lake. BLA would like to thank all our members, past and present, along with our business and government partners. The picture below represents the Boone Lake we have all come to love and enjoy! Of this, the Business Checking account balance was $14,297 (which included a $2,000 designated grant to Johnson City), the Capital Savings account balance was $10,774, and the Boone Lake Cleanup Day account balance was $2,884. Due to major expenses in the first 3 months of 2013, the Capital Savings account is now close to being depleted. This fund was used to purchase a new 60hp motor, a new storage facility located at Boone Lake Marina, new signage at the marinas and ramps, replacement of equipment stolen from a BLA boat, and upgraded containment barriers at our retention sites around the lake. The Capital Savings account is replenished gradually as Dues and Donations are received. 7.5% of every deposit is allocated to this account. MEMBERSHIP NEWS Our membership at the end of 2012 stood at 582, 48 shy of the totals reached in 2010 and 2011. Thank you to the 400+ members who have already submitted dues for 2013. Additional dues reminders will be sent out over the next few months. If you have not mailed in your dues, please do so as soon as possible. BLA believes that increasing our membership is vital not only for funding our activities, but also increasing water quality awareness around our lake. There is power in numbers. All Boone Lake Residents (2,000+) should be members of BLA. Encourage your friends and neighbors to join us in the fight to keep Boone Lake clean and beautiful. WATER QUALITY The Water Quality Committee meets in April to discuss water collection testing sites around the lake for the summer of 2013. We will also discuss additional activities that the Water Quality Committee might pursue to maintain our good water quality for everyone who uses the lake. If you are interested in joining the committee or taking water samples during the summer, call Ann Harrison at 423-323-3887. LAKE CLEANUP OPERATIONS The BLA crew and Lake Operations Committee have been extremely busy this winter. See article on page 7 for details. BOONE LAKE ASSOCIATION is now on FACEBOOK Today’s young people and not so young people enjoy using Facebook to connect with family, friends and businesses. Boone Lake Association has created a Facebook page to connect with existing members and hopefully interest some new people in becoming members. Boone Lake Cleanup Day – Saturday April 27, 2013 Questions for BLA – [email protected] JANUARY FLOODIN G Jay Wise Monday January 14, 2013, the forecast was not good for Boone Lake and the surrounding region. The National Weather Service was predicting heavy rain and issued an area flood watch. The stationary front stalled, producing non-stop heavy rainfall across our region that lasted for several days. The January flood raised water levels in Boone Lake, South Holston Lake and Watauga Lake approximately 15 feet in just a few days. We were fortunate this rain system hit in January while the lake levels were down so there was somewhere for all this rain water to go. TVA did a great job managing the lake levels. However, with over 650 tributaries feeding into Boone Lake, most reaching near flood stage, there was a lot of trash, debris and logs delivered to Boone Lake on both the Watauga and South Holston sides of the lake. The region received more than five inches of rain in a 3 day period followed by several inches of snow. At Bristol Motor Speedway and the surrounding area rainwater flooded parking lots. These floodwaters carried trash into Beaver Creek, ending up in Boone Lake near Davis Boat Dock. Boone Lake Association with the help of labor provided by Sullivan County cleaned up the area to remove much of the trash and prevent it from reaching Boone Lake. With the water rising and snow on the ground, one of our crewmembers went to check on the BLA pontoon cleanup boat to discover it had been robbed and vandalized. Robbers broke into a locked tool box with a logging chain securing it with padlocks. Two chainsaws, a backpack leaf blower and several gas cans including the gas tank for the boat motor along with the logging chain were taken. They also damaged some of the wiring for the boat’s lights. A police report was filed with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Dept. If anyone saw anything or hears of any information that may help in the investigation please contact the Sheriff’s Dept. or Boone Lake Association. Like the old saying goes, “when it rains it pours”! Additional security steps have been put in place to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Boone Lake Association will be working to clean up lower parts of the Watauga River in an attempt to remove some of the trash before it reaches Boone Lake. This along with our 14th Annual Boone Lake Cleanup scheduled on Saturday April 27, 2013 will hopefully get our lake cleaned up so we can all enjoy a fun and safe summer. Cause And Effect BARRIER REPLACEMENT BLA worked this winter to replace the old styrofoam barriers at our containment areas. These barriers are used to contain logs and large debris in designated coves during the summer until the water goes down and the debris can be burned or removed during the winter. The new corrugated pipe barriers are environmentally friendly and are more visually attractive.
