• Diversity of K-Pop: a Focus on Race, Language, and Musical Genre
DIVERSITY OF K-POP: A FOCUS ON RACE, LANGUAGE, AND MUSICAL GENRE Wonseok Lee A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2018 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2018 Wonseok Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Since the end of the 1990s, Korean popular culture, known as Hallyu, has spread to the world. As the most significant part of Hallyu, Korean popular music, K-pop, captivates global audiences. From a typical K-pop artist, Psy, to a recent sensation of global popular music, BTS, K-pop enthusiasts all around the world prove that K-pop is an ongoing global cultural flow. Despite the fact that the term K-pop explicitly indicates a certain ethnicity and language, as K- pop expanded and became influential to the world, it developed distinct features that did not exist in it before. This thesis examines these distinct features of K-pop focusing on race, language, and musical genre: it reveals how K-pop groups today consist of non-Korean musicians, what makes K-pop groups consisting of all Korean musicians sing in non-Korean languages, what kind of diverse musical genres exists in the K-pop field with two case studies, and what these features mean in terms of the discourse of K-pop today. By looking at the diversity of K-pop, I emphasize that K-pop is not merely a dance- oriented musical genre sung by Koreans in the Korean language.

  • Chinese Nationalism, Cyber-Populism, and Cross-Strait Relations
Chinese Nationalism, cyber-populism, and cross-strait relations Ye Weili; Michael Toomey Wenzhou-Kean University THIS IS A PRELIMINARY, INCOMPLETE FIRST DRAFT PREPARED FOR THE 2017 ISA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN HONG KONG: DO NOT CITE OR CIRCULATE WITHOUT THE AUTHOR’S PERMISSION Abstract: In November 2015, a Taiwanese singer named Chou Tzuyu appeared on a Korean TV show as a member of the pop group ‘Twice’. During the show, she claimed that she was from Taiwan (without mentioning China), and waved the Republic of China flag. Chou was subsequently the recipient of vociferous condemnation from Chinese ‘netizens’, and eventually was compelled to make a public apology for her actions. This apology became the center of an Internet-based dispute between the netizens of mainland China and Taiwan, conducted mainly on the Facebook page of then Taiwanese Presidential candidate, Tsai Yingwen. Subsequently, the tone of this dispute had significant effects on the 2016 Taiwanese general election, with a decisive number of Taiwanese voters switching their support to Tsai. “Cyber-populism”, and the online activities of nationalistic Chinese netizens, are not just limited to the Chou Tzuyu incident. Indeed, Chinese netizens have been vocal in the wake of other international incidents, such as the United Nations Convention ruling on the so-called “Nine-Dash Line” dispute. However, the Chou Tzuyu case was particularly notable for its clearly counterproductive outcome: an argument over the use of Taiwanese symbols of nationalist identity, driven by the identities and objectives of Chinese nationalists, contributed to the electoral success of a pro-Taiwanese independence political party. With this in mind, this paper examines the relationship between Chinese nationalism and cyber-populism, and discusses the effects of this phenomenon on the achievement of China’s stated foreign policy goals.

The way in which individuals are exposed to different genres and types of music helps illustrate the extent to which globalization has had an impact on the world. Before the invention of the internet, music was only available for purchase to consumers who went to record stores and physically purchased goods. Now, countless unique songs and genres are readily available with just a single search. Due to how easily consumers can access new music, digital distribution has completely overtaken the profit from selling physical copies of albums. In 2006, record labels still made $9.4 billion from CD sales in the United States, despite the fact that digital distribution entities, such as Napster and iTunes, provided digital copies of the same songs.

My 2019/2020 TRAPE is about Korean Entertainment! I have been into K-Pop for almost 3 years and I have always been researching lots of things about Korean celebrities, their activities and their TV shows. Since I was a child, I have always been very curious about the Asian culture, even though I thought they were gangster. As I grew up, I have become more and more connected to their culture. Then, at the end of 2016, I listened to my first K-Pop song ever. I was 10 years old and I was in primary school when I got to know EXO, the first group I listened to. They had a big impact in my life because in that moment I was struggling mentally and physically... The only thing that made me happy, was listening to their songs! They would make feel better in every way possible, once I listened to some music, I’d completely forget about my worries. It was always the best part of my days. That is why I have grown attached to K-Pop songs, dances and singers. Table of contents WHAT WERE THE MOST FAMOUS SERIES (KOREAN DRAMAS)? (2019) IS IT POPULAR IN OTHER COUNTRIES? Abstract 3 In recent times, the small East Asian country of South Korea has exploded onto the global scene of being a recognizable force in an economic, political and cultural sense. The South Korean government in particular, is credited through its common financial backing of cultural programs and its push to constantly increase tourism to the country by enacting forms of soft power, which they believe to be the best choice for South Korea’s further development.
